The Hunt for the Ring is the fourth chapter of Part Three of Unfinished Tales.
Synopsis[]
The tale was told by Gandalf to Frodo when talking to him of matters concerning the distant past in relation to the Ring. It tells of Sauron's search for the One Ring after learning of its survival through the errant Gollum caught wandering in Mordor in TA 3017. This leads to the mustering of all of Sauron's spies and servants, including the infamous Black Riders, now once again sent out to search for the Ring. It also tells the further history of Gollum in the west after being released by Sauron. Also featured are alternative versions of the tale.
The third tale was that of the rivalry between Saruman and Gandalf during the late Third Age and its connections to the Shire.
