The Great House as seen in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
The Great House,[1] also known as the town-hall and the great hall, was the town's official meeting place of Lake-town, and may have likely been the Master of Lake-town's personal residence.
History[]
During the Quest of Erebor in TA 2941, when Thorin and Company arrived in Lake-town, they were brought by the captain of the guard to the Great House in the market-place where the Master was feasting. The company was eventually invited to stay for a time, with the Master granting his own great chair to Thorin. When the company left, the "Master and his councillors bade them farewell from the great steps of the town-hall that went down to the lake".[2]
The Great House's roof crumbled after it was smashed by a sweep of the dragon Smaug's tail.[1]
Speculation[]
Given that the Master's great chair was within the Great House in the market-place, it is likely that the Great House was one and the same as the town-hall which the Master and his councilors saw the Company off.
In adaptations[]
The Hobbit film trilogy[]
In Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy, there is a wind lance ballista on the top of the Great House. Bard uses this ballista to kill Smaug with the Black Arrow.
