The Ñoldor Elves had successfully held a siege of Morgoth's stronghold, building many castles and fortifications that ever watched Angband's gates, and companies of cavalry patrolled the Ard-galen. Fenced in, Morgoth choose not to attack in force as before and took council with himself on how he might defeat his enemy in other ways. During these long years, Morgoth began the breeding of the Dragons and the most prominent and well-known in later years was Glaurung, the first of the deadly Fire-drakes.
The attack[]
Glaurung, still young and only half-grown, felt strong enough to strike. On his own volition he came forth suddenly from the Gates of Angband. At first the Ñoldor were terrified at this new menace, and fled before him southward. As a result, the dragon unleashed destruction upon Ard-galen, burning it with hot blasts of flames. But the Ñoldor were not thwarted, and under Fingon they regrouped in and around Dorthonion and Ered Wethrin. Riding northward to face Glaurung, they hit him with volleys of arrows, and soon he was surrounded. At close range, Fingon and his Ñoldor riders continued their barrage of arrows, and Glaurung soon retreated back into Angband, unable to endure them.

Aftermath[]
While the Ñoldor celebrated their victory, Glaurung was scolded by Morgoth for revealing himself too soon and without full strength. Afterwards, there was peace for two-hundred years with the Ñoldor tightening their guard of Angband.[1]
