The Count of Time marked the beginning of the keeping of time in Arda.
This began when the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telperion, came into full stature and glory after the Days before days came to an end. The Valar observed the waxing and waning: when one tree was in full light and the other was fading into softer light, upon which both lights mingled together. Both of these observations led to lengths of days being based on the trees' waxing and waning.[1] This method of the keeping of time ended with the Trees' destruction at the hands of Morgoth and Ungoliant.[2]
