Moses was a religious leader mentioned in Hebrew, Christian and Islamic religious texts. He is most famously remembered for delivering the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai. In almost all religious texts he leads his people out of bondage.
References to Moses in Lost[]
In Lost, Moses is mentioned by name overtly on several occasions:
- Mr. Eko tells Claire the story of how Aaron helped Moses lead. ("The 23rd Psalm")
- Naomi compares Jack to Moses as he is leading his followers off the island. ("Through the Looking Glass, Part 1")
- Before murdering Jacob, Benjamin Linus compares John Locke (who is now the The Man in Black) to Moses. ("The Incident, Part 2")
Other allusions have been less explicit.
- Charlie's dream of Aaron's crib in the water echoes Moses's mother finding him among the rushes. ("Fire + Water")
Moses as a leader out of bondage[]
Moses leading his people out of bondage connects with Lost's theme. According to the Book of Exodus in the Bible, which leant its name to the first season finale, Moses was told by God to free the Israelites from slavery by the ancient Egyptians. At various points Jack, Juliet, Sawyer and others have struggled to get off the island after feeling imprisoned on it.
Moses's staff[]
Eko's stick echoes Moses's staff, which he used to perform miracles. At one point, he transformed it into a snake, and people often associate the caduceus, the Staff's symbol, with this miracle.
