A back-alley bartender serving chemical drinks to chemtech-augmented Zaunites

Chemtech is a techmaturgical technology that combines both machinery and potent chemicals to empower its users. Primarily used in the toxic depths of Zaun Crest icon Zaun, chemtech is the undercity's answer to Piltover Crest icon Piltover's Hextech.

Lore[]

Notable users[]

  • Jinx Jinx uses chemtech to power her bombs.
  • Singed Singed has designed and used numerous chemtech devices over the years.
  • After losing her left arm, Sevika Sevika had it replaced with a mechanical prosthetic and used shimmer as a fuel source to power it in battle. (Arcane 2021 profileicon Arcane)
  • Renata Glasc Renata Glasc is the head of Glasc Industries, a corporation that develops weaponry, prosthetics, and beauty products from a unique blend of chemicals developed by her parents before their deaths.[1]
  • Turbo Chemtanks inhale a constant supply of shimmer in gas form through their helmets, which allows them to possess superhuman strength, agility, and durability for indefinite periods of time. (Arcane 2021 profileicon Arcane)
  • Urgot Urgot is a living example of just how far chemtech can push the human psyche.
  • Warwick Warwick is a chemically-altered human equipped with chemtech augmentations.

History[]

Eramis, The Baron of Taste, augmented by chemtech

Although chemtech has existed in Zaun since the early 900s AN, it was not widely used until the later half of the 900s AN, when Piltover began to mass produce hextech devices for its people to use. As they were denied both the funds and the means to craft hextech devices for themselves, Zaun's researchers decided to turn using potent chemicals to power their creations instead.

The hexgates that brought new trade to Piltover also had a positive effect on Zaun and revitalized the undercity's industry. Those who benefited from this economic surge were called the Chem-Barons, the new Zaunite elite. However, the increased industry also led to increased pollution in Zaun, which only exacerberated the already horrible living conditions in the undercity. As a necessity due to their overexposure to the toxic pollution, many Zaunites turned to chemtech as a way to deal with their failing or irreversibly damaged bodies. Many levels of Zaun, especially the Sump level, are too toxic for normal people to traverse, so special chemtech devices or suits are required.

Properties[]

Chemtech harnesses chemical energy to power its mechanical parts and produce both light and heat. Much like hextech, it is also deliberately designed so just about anyone can use it for themselves. Chemtech also performs just like hextech does, but is far more unstable, toxic, and explosive.

Chemtech currently exists in various colors, mainly from green to purple. The latter corresponds to a more expensive, refined, and stable version that is used in products created by Glasc Industries.[2]

Inventions[]

  • Chem-Bomb: An explosive using chemicals as incendiary material.
  • Chem-Burner: A powerful chem-light that can be used to illuminate over large distances. It is also a heating element with a near-invisible chemical flame and can be used to warm up food.
  • Chem-light/Chem-Lamp/Chem-Lantern: Chemical-powered lights.
  • Chem-Lumens: Street lights running on chemicals, likely a type of gas.
  • Chempunk Chainsword Chempunk Chainsword: A chainsword powered by chemicals.
  • Chempump: Parts used for chemtech augmentations.
  • Chemtech Putrifier Chemtech Putrifier: A gun that shoots toxic chemicals.
  • Chemtubes: Parts used for chemtech augmentations.
  • Esophilters: A chemtech augmentation that allows people to breathe noxious fumes safely.
  • Jinx's Chompers Chompers: Custom-made grenades with bear-trap tops that are able to latch onto their victims. The bombs are powered by a variety of explosive chemicals and have a very complex design, which makes them difficult to disarm.
  • Jinx's Super Mega Death Rockets Super Mega Death Rockets: Custom-made rockets that are designed the same way that Jinx's Chompers Chompers are. Their explosive potential increases with distance. Jinx primarily shoots them using Fishbones Fishbones, her signature rocket launcher.
  • Mortal Reminder Mortal Reminder: A mechanical bow powered by chemicals.
  • Turbo Chemtank Turbo Chemtank: A mechanical suit that empowers its users with shimmer and is primarily used as grunts for security purposes. It also has retractable dual blades.

Trivia[]

  • Chemtech was heavily inspired by the Biopunk genre.
  • The crest of Zaun Crest icon Zaun is shaped in the form of a chemtech device with a syringe.
