Laois County Council Announces Acquisition of Avon Site in Portarlington for Industrial Development.

Laois County Council is pleased to announce the acquisition of 6 acres at the former Avon site at Canal Road, Portarlington. The Council has previously approved Part 8 proposals for the lands, facilitating the development of the Canal Road Business Park, providing four, fully serviced Industrial sites. In turn, this creates a significant opportunity for businesses and further boosts the local economy.

Laois Secondary Schools take part in their first VEX Robotics competition

In its first year as a Junior Cycle-only event, the Laois VEX IQ Robotics Competition took place in Mountrath to decide who represents the county at the National VEX Robotics Finals in Cork at the end of February. Students collaborated on a 3-part robotics program to represent their school in this highly intriguing STEM activity.

“Draft Joint Portarlington Local Area Plan 2025-2031 Pursuant to Section 20(3) of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended), notice is hereby given that jointly Laois County Council and Offaly County Council, being the Planning Authorities for Portarlington, have prepared a Draft Portarlington Joint Local Area Plan 2025-2031 (Draft JLAP). The Draft JLAP comprises a Written Statement and maps and is accompanied by: • a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environmental Report, prepared in accordance with the SEA Directive (2001/42/EC) and pursuant to the Planning and Development (Strategic Environmental Assessment) Regulations 2004 (S.I No. 436 of 2004) (as amended); • an Appropriate Assessment (AA) Natura Impact Report pursuant to the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended); • a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment pursuant to The Planning System and Flood Risk Management Guidelines (2009) and,
