History[]
There are two known conflicting accounts of the Ruby of Truth origins. The first is as written down in the Royal Library of Gladstone, that proposes that during The Dark Times a Sir Michel Robard unearthed the Ruby of Truth and that the stone spoke unto him, and offered it to Heir of the throne of Gladstone. Later, King Andrew, the thirteenth heir to the throne descended into the depths of the Urbish Highlands and uncovered the Shard of Truth. These two were combined to form the Whole Truth, which was used to banish the denizens of the nether world and brought about a great peace upon the Lands. With the ancient people of Gladstone having discovered a method of controlling the magics, they rose unto power amongst the barbarous tribes of the great wasteland.[1]
The second account takes place later and describes the Whole Truth as having already be together and only separated at a later point. In this it is written that during the time when the Kingdom of Gladstone was first founded, there lived Varsno, a great wizard from the southern continent, who possessed the last remaining Ancient Magic artifact, the powerful Nether Mask, which was used by The Ancients to mimic mortal experiences. Varsno realized that the magic inside was too potentially dangerous for mortal use, and therefore buried the Mask twelve thousand feet deep in the mudflats surrounding the Western Islands. To further ensure that the Mask could never be used for evil purposes, he traveled to Gladstone and gave the Truth to Larkin Gladoch, the fifth King of Gladstone, and cautioned to hold the artifact ready should someone ever unearth the Mask.[2]
This would inevitably come to pass, when the witch Scotia, leader of the Dark Army, uncovered the Mask in the Urbish Mines. Upon learning of this, King Richard, 73rd heir to Gladstone, tasked his champion, a young Huline by the name of Kieran, with retrieving the Ruby of Truth from the manor of Sir Roland in the Southland Forest, who was currently in possession of the artifact. When he arrived, he discovered Roland on the verge of death and the Ruby taken by the Dark Army. Returning to the Northlands, he entered the King's chambers only to be confronted by Scotia, engaged in a magic dual with the mistress Dawn, with Richard slumped over, poisoned by the nefarious witch. While his body was kept in stasis by his Royal Council's magics, Kieran was tasked again with seeking out the Draracle and obtaining the cure. On his way back, he discovered the Keep has been destroyed the Dark Army, the body of the King stolen and his council scattered, thus beginning his quest to no only retrieve the Ruby, but cure the king, unite the disparate council and ultimately defeat Scotia. Luckily, the Ruby was found to be in possession of Mathpasha, chieftain of the Gorkha, a friendly race of salamander people living in the swamps to the south who recovered it from a Dark Army band who trespassed onto their territory. At this point Kieran could either steal, persuade or preform a task for the chieftain who would in turn give him the Ruby. In either case, the Ruby was acquired and eventually taken with Kieran, Paulson and Baccata to Castle Cimmeria. Upon curing King Richard, he gave to him the Shard of Truth and the two were made Whole, and was used to great effect against Scotia and her hideous transformations. What became of the artifact after this point is unclear, but what is known is that the Ruby eventually came into the possession of Dawn who then gave it to Luther in his final confrontation with Belial, who attempted to slow him down by casting projections of his mother and the Draracle himself. The whereabouts of the Ruby, Shard and Whole Truth beyond this point are unknown.[3]
