Gill-Hakaider

Gill-Hakaider

Three years after the downfall of DARK, Gill-Hakaider (ギルハカイダー, Giru Hakaidā) emerged with the transplantation of Professor Gill's brain. Created by transplanting the brains of the top three scientists of the DARK Science Team - Red, Blue, and Silver - Gill-Hakaider led a team of three Hakaider units, forming the Hakaider Corps.[1]

While referred to as Gill-Hakaider, Boss Hakaider (ボスハカイダー, Bosu Hakaidā), or Black Hakaider (ブラックハカイダー, Burakku Hakaidā) in various publications[2], the consistent designation within the series remains simply as Hakaider.

Biography[]

Kikaider 01[]

During his leadership of the Hakaider Corps, Gill-Hakaider was depicted wearing a cape and occasionally using Gill's flute (a scene recreated in various collectibles like gashapon and S.I.C. figures, becoming iconic for Gill-Hakaider). It's worth noting, as explained in the LD commentary for the previous series Android Kikaider, that Gill-Hakaider is entirely distinct from the Hakaider of the previous series, being a different individual (robot).

Unlike the Hakaider from the previous series, Gill-Hakaider does not transform into Saburo (articles in magazines like "TV Land" explain that "Saburo was executed"). Instead, he utilizes his transformation ability to disguise himself as other individuals, regardless of gender. The shape of the lightning motifs on his face differs, and four cross marks are added to his chest. Unlike in the manga version, he lacks memories or personality as Gill.

Furthermore, unlike the previous cool and nihilistic demeanor, Gill-Hakaider exhibits an arrogant and cruel personality. The portrayal as a formidable rival character diminishes, with his behavior becoming coarse and brutish. His goal is world domination and the eradication of the Kikaider Brothers.

Black Dragon

Black Dragon

Possessing the ability to transform into the Monster Robot Black Dragon (ブラックドラゴン, Burakku Doragon), he exhibits ten times his normal power during this transformation. Moreover, when he combines with the other three Hakaider units to become Gattaider, he displays forty times his normal power.

His weapons include the Hakaider Shot, the Destruction Sword, and a whip. He can envelop the surroundings in dark clouds with Satan Darkness (サタンダークネス, Satan Dākunesu)[3], use hypnosis with glowing eyes, and even wield Gill's flute. In the Four Stage Attack, a combination technique of the quartet, Hakaider delivers the finishing blow with the Fourth Stage: Condor Bind (四段・コンドル縛り, Yodan - Kondoru Shibari). He is defeated by 01 with the Blast End in episode 10, leading to the complete annihilation of the Hakaider Corps. However, he is rescued by the SHADOW organization (whether he was revived after being destroyed in battle or rescued before being hit by Blast End remains unclear), and although he formally acts as a member of SHADOW thereafter, he never fully submits to their authority.

In episode 19, he summons the spirit of Gill, enhancing his power threefold by using the energy battery carried by the spirit. This power-up grants him new techniques such as the Outlaw Kick (アウトローキック, Autorō Kikku), Magma Upper (マグマアッパー, Maguma Appā), an enhanced version of the Guillotine Drop called Guillotine Hook (ギロチンフック, Girochin Fukku), and a move resembling the Giant Wheel Throw called Hakaider Shoot (ハカイダーシュート, Hakaidā Shūto). Additionally, he acquires a new weapon, the Iron Belt, which restrains enemies.

After summoning Gill's spirit, he overwhelms Shadow Knight and battles the Kikaider Brothers evenly. However, in episode 20, he is defeated by 01 and subsequently revived and brainwashed by Big Shadow, swearing allegiance to SHADOW thereafter.

Since becoming the SHADOW executive, there has been a sudden increase in comical depictions. Gill-Hakaider has been portrayed as ruthlessly murdering ordinary women on the streets one after another, raiding warehouses storing toilet paper in supermarkets during panic buying due to the oil crisis, hoarding oranges to cause confusion, laughing, and even being reluctantly ordered by Big Shadow, who was concerned about Waruder's fear of dogs, to exterminate stray dogs (even he couldn't hide his displeasure at the time). These incidents mark a stark contrast to his previous demeanor.

In episode 44, after confronting the young man Eisuke Toge, who sees him as his father's enemy, Gill-Hakaider is ultimately defeated when Mari outmaneuvers him and Eisuke steals the Hakaider Shot, using it to shoot him down.

In the final episode, he undergoes destruction by the Bijinder Lazer and repeated resurrection through the Robot Regeneration Device. However, ultimately, he meets his demise when he is hit by the Triple Circline from the Kikaider Brothers and Bijinder. In his interactions with Big Shadow, he alternates between using respectful language and speaking informally, displaying obedience while occasionally revealing his high self-esteem.

Trivia[]

  • In the "Kaiju-Kaijin Best 600," published by Keibunsha in 1987, it is written that the personality of Hakaider is influenced by the owner of the brain. In the previous series, there was a weakness where the brain would die and combat effectiveness would drastically decrease if blood transfusions weren't performed within a certain time frame. However, in this series, this weakness is not mentioned (similarly for the other Hakaider units). Additionally, there have been instances where settings such as having an aesthetic sense different from humans (with a reversal of the sense of beauty and ugliness) unique to robots have been introduced.
  • During the initial still photoshoots, Gill-Hakaider did not have the star mark on his chest.[4]
  • In the proposal, it was described that Saburo transplanted Gill's brain from a corpse with his own hands.[5]
