Ryo Takeuchi (竹内 崚, Takeuchi Ryō), better known under the stage name Ryoma Takeuchi (竹内 涼真, Takeuchi Ryōma), is a Japanese actor and model who portrayed Shinnosuke Tomari/Kamen Rider Drive in Kamen Rider Drive.

Biography[]

Takeuchi's real first name "Ryo" was given to him by his parents, who liked the way it sounded. He began playing soccer at the age of five and played for his high-school team Tokyo Verdy. After going into college on a soccer scholarship, an injury destroyed his chances of ever going professional.[1] Though soccer was no longer an option for him, Takeuchi showed some interest in entertainment and entered into a modeling competition. After he won, he debuted as an actor with Horipro and set a goal to become "Kamen Rider". Eventually he auditioned and landed the role of Shinnosuke in Kamen Rider Drive.

After Kamen Rider Drive, Takeuchi's career grew in popularity. In 2019, he made his Hollywood-debut as an unnamed Pokémon trainer in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu[2]. In the Japanese-dub release for the film, he voices Tim Goodman. The film also stars Kyoryuger-cast member Marie IitoyoIcon-crosswiki as the voice of Lucy Stevens. In 2021, he starred alongside actor Tatsuya Fujiwara in the 2021 film The Sun Stands Still. In 2022, he starred as Arata Miyabe in Roppongi Class, a Japanese drama remake of the K-drama Itaewon Class.

From 2021 to 2024, Takeuchi portrayed the lead role of Hibiki Mamiya in four seasons of Love You as the World Ends, concluding with the film Love You as the World Ends FINAL with the latter has him starring alongside Zero-One lead Fumiya Takahashi who plays Yamato Shibasaki.

In late 2024, Takeuchi starred as Kazuma Kiryu in a live-action television series adaptation of the Like a Dragon video game series[3], titled Like a Dragon: Yakuza, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in October 2024.[4]

Personal Life[]

  • Takeuchi watched Kamen Rider W as a child and cites Ryu Terui as his favorite character. As such, he suggested to have Minehiro Kinomoto reprise his role for Drive Saga: Kamen Rider Chaser.[5]
  • Takeuchi stated that one of the reasons why he began acting was because he wanted to be a Kamen Rider and was happy that his dream did indeed come true.[6]
  • Takahito Omori stated that Takeuchi was cast not for his acting skill, but for his ability to listen to others and be able to output what he heard, which proved useful for filming Kamen Rider Drive.[7]
  • It took at least 20 episodes for Takeuchi to feel his ADR had "chemistry" with Seiji Takaiwa's suit acting. [8]
  • Takeuchi has two younger siblings, Yuito and Honoka, both whom are also actors.

Health issues[]

  • On June 16, 2022, It was reported that had Takeuchi tested positive for COVID-19. [9] He has since recovered.

  • He celebrated his 22nd birthday while filming for Drive's thirty-third episode. [10]
  • Drive-writer Riku Sanjo initially had a different vision of Shinnosuke that was not like Takeuchi. However since Takeuchi was cast, Sanjo began to write Shinnosuke with Takeuchi's appearance and personality in mind.
  • Though Takeuchi was unable reprise his role in both Kamen Rider Zi-O and the summer movie, he showed his support for his co-stars Yu Inaba and Taiko Katono through social media.
