Amazon river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) locally known as boto and bufeo or in general as the pink river dolphin are a real-life species of cetacean which appears in the Jungle Cruise film.

Description[]

This was a species of toothed-whale which inhabits the rivers of the Amazon rainforest. According to local lore, the dolphins are shapeshifters which cause misfortune to mortals who look into their eyes.

The dolphins appear in this film. When Lily Houghton admires them, Frank tells her and MacGregor about local superstition regarding them and getting misfortune from their eyes. At the end of the film, MacGregor brings up the dolphins bringing misfortune while ridiculing the Royal Anthropological and Diverse Adventures Society.

Trivia[]

  • The superstition regarding the dolphins mentioned in the film is based on the myth of the Encante or Encantado from real-world South American folklore.
  • The dolphins are amongst the few animals heavily featured in the film and not appearing in the ride.
