“ | This isn't over! I will bring a new world! My magic is 'never giving up'! | „ |
~ Conrad's ideal magic before being sealed away. |
“ | You have a skewed idea of what a king is capable of. You think the Wizard King's all powerful. But none were able to bring revolution to this nation, including the first! In fact, Julius did quite the opposite when he was beaten by the elves. Or have you forgotten?! Because of him, the Clover Kingdom almost met its doom! Changing nothing! Protecting nothing! Every Wizard King has been effectively useless. | „ |
~ Conrad declaring the Wizard Kings to be useless. |
“ | Did that boy just defeat me? How strange. If that's the case, why do I feel so at ease? Ah. Now it's making sense. Asta. Become the Wizard King. And then share the warm world you hold in your heart with every citizen in this nation. Your magic is 'never giving up.' So I know you can do it. | „ |
~ Conrad encouraging Asta to become the Wizard King. |
Conrad Leto is the main antagonist in the 2023 Japanese anime movie, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King.
He was once the 27th Wizard King who was imprisoned by his successor, Julius Novachrono, for his crimes against the Clover Kingdom. Upon his escape, he would free himself and revive past Wizard Kings before him, resuming his plot to create a better world.
He was voiced by Toshihiko Seki in Japanese and Chris Niosi in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Upon losing his wife and squad, he attempted to use the Imperial Sword Elsdocia to destroy the Clover Kingdom once.
- He attempted to kill Julius Novachrono and the rest of the Magic Knight Captains when they were about to seal him away.
- Upon being freed, he revived Jester Garandos, Princia Funnybunny, and Edward Avalanche to assist him in destroying the world.
- Staged an attack on the Festival Stadium, having dozens of Princia's Magic Soldiers attack and drain the civilians of their mana.
- He stole Marx Francois' Memory Exchange Magic to gain knowledge over the other Magic Knights, including Asta.
- Imprisoned most of the Magic Knight Captains after beating them.
- Attacked Asta, Noelle, Finral, and Secre (Nero) within the depths of Branch Zero, which he later stole Noelle's Creation Magic.
- He ordered Princia to further the attack on the Clover Kingdom, killing dozens of Magic Knights and having thousands of civilians being drained of their mana.
- He intended to form Gargantuan Compound Magic using the Elsdocia Sword (which holds every unique magic attribute of past Wizard Kings) and the mana he stole from thousands to fuse into one, using such powerful magic to destroy the whole continent that'll lead to a catastrophic disaster, killing likely millions, if not, billions (should it reach beyond the continent) as a result.
- During the process, true to his word, the result of forming Gargantuan Compound Magic ended up bursting rays of light from the terrain, which reached outside the continent and against multiple villages, endangering countless lives.
- After destroying the world, he would have all souls victimized from the event to be collected in Elsdocia where he'll choose who gets to be in his "new world" or not.
- Tries to convince Asta numerous times of joining him and his cause despite many times the latter refused.
- Upon capturing Julius Novachrono, he forces him to watch as Conrad prepares to destroy the Clover Kingdom just to make him lose hope.
- Torturously stabs Asta for his refusal and mocking how the Wizard Kings are utterly useless.
- When his plans failed, he activates his last resort of using his most strongest and forbidden spell, Doom's Gate (a dark, gigantic red sphere), and have it launch onto the whole continent, if not, the whole Earth, just to remake the "better world" he longed for.
- While he's not as heinous as Lucius Zogratis, Lucifero, Zagred, The Dark Triad, and Megicula due to lacking visceral cruelty, Conrad stands out for attempting omnicide more than at least two to three times already, the latter two being the most destructive plans he tried to pull off.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's ultimately too tragic. Throughout growing up, he was shunned away due to others fearing his Key Magic and even after joining the Magic Knights, he and his squad were ambushed by royals and nobles who hated him for no particular reason than simply just prejudice, resulting in the deaths of his entire squad and his beloved wife, Lovilia. Because of this, Conrad's worldview became so warped due to the corruption of nobles and began to believe there's nothing the Wizard Kings can do to seize the prejudice and injustices. It's also played for sympathy.
- He's a well-intentioned extremist. The main reason for wanting to destroy the Earth is to put an end to the corruption and create a better world, one where equality prevails, and as he puts it "where people can respect and laugh together". While his methods and actions are too extreme, he genuinely believes it's for the best and that he's saving everyone, and he's not entirely wrong about the Clover Kingdom's corruption, as he pointed out how Asta was a victim to discrimination.
- He genuinely loved his wife, Lovilia. He's shown to have grieved her death and kept her locket as a memento, which served as motivation for his crimes. When the locket snapped from his neck, it caused him to remember her, showing how much she meant to him.
- He possibly cared about his squad, as other than Lovilia, he remembered them as well before he was defeated by Asta. He's also devastated by their deaths.
- He genuinely respects Asta. Despite numerous times he's tried killing him for refusal, he came to a degree that he and the former are alike and tried to have him join him in the "new world" he'll create, promising to reward him for his deeds. As he started to fade away, he wishes Asta the best and hoping he'll become the next Wizard King.
- He has a sympathetic death. In his last moments, he comes to find peace in himself after remembering his wife and slowly, alongside the other three Wizard Kings, accepted their deaths as they fade into the afterlife.
- Due to his tragic past, being played for sympathy, and dying in peace due to everything he went through because of the nobles' corruption, it makes him a scapegoat.
