Baroness Angelina Dalles-Barnett, nicknamed Anne and also known by the title Madame Red, is a major antagonist in the manga and anime series Black Butler. She is the younger sister of Rachel Phantomhive, the former wife of Baron Barnett, and aunt of Ciel Phantomhive. At first, she appears to be a merely loving aunt to Ciel, though it later gets revealed that she is behind the Jack the Ripper murders along with Grell Sutcliff as Ciel would later discover albeit with a dark backstory to it.
She was voiced by Romi Park and Masako Katsuki in the Japanese sub and by Lydia Mackay in the English dub.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- After being consulted by a prostitute client who wanted to abort her child, Angelina killed her at her house by stabbing her to death for not valuing her child.
- She starts off a killing spree with Grell Sutcliff where they would kill numerous prostitutes through Grell mutilating them to death with a chainsaw, these murders giving them the label of "Jack the Ripper."
- When Ciel and Sebastian catch them red-handed in their tracks after they killed another prostitute, Angelina allows Grell to fight and try to kill Sebastian as she herself attempts to kill Ciel with a knife, though she finds herself unable to due to Ciel reminding her of her sister and being viewed in her eyes as a son.
- Despite the heinous standard of Black Butler, Angelina stands out for starting and masterminding the Jack the Ripper murders she committed with Grell, said murders involving prostitutes being gruesomely mauled to death with chainsaws, placing the most brutal kills within the series on her hands.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She is extremely tragic and sympathetic for the following reasons:
- After her sister married the man she loved, she would marry another man and eventually become pregnant believing she's finally found happiness only to end up being injured in a carriage accident with her husband who would end up dying in the aftermath.
- She would lose her unborn baby due to the doctors having to remove her uterus along with it to save her.
- She would lose her sister and the husband of her to a fire that burned down their mansion and killed them both.
- She displays some form of standards, being disgusted by the idea of abortion due to viewing it as women not valuing their own babies as they should and being willing to throw it away without a second thought.
- She has people she cares about such as:
- her sister and her husband, being unable to bring herself to hate the former for marrying the man she loved nor the latter for choosing to marry her instead of Angelina and being shocked with grief upon discovering they were killed by a fire burning down their mansion and mourning their deaths. Her sister even ends up being one of the reasons she finds herself unable to kill Ciel due to him reminding her of her.
- her own husband and her unborn baby, mourning her husband's death upon being notified of his death as well as that of her unborn baby when the doctors informed her that they had to remove her uterus with it in order to save her life after a carriage incident
- Ciel, being glad when she realized he's safe and embracing him when encountering him in the mansion and bonding with him over games of chess that they would play. When Ciel begins investigating the Jack the Ripper case (the case she was the mastermind of), she tried to convince him to discontinue it, not wanting him to find out it was her and when he does, she describes how unfortunate she finds it that he did and admitting that she would've played chess again had he let it go. While she did attempt to kill him, she found herself unable to do so due to viewing him as a son and reminding her of her sister, deciding to spare him, which is what led to her unfortunate death at the hands of Grell.
- Her death is played for sympathy as her whole tragic life is shown cinematically due to Grell's Grim Reaper powers as sad music plays in the background before she dies completely with Ciel mourning her death, continuing to do so at her funeral, even covering her with her scarlet dress and putting a rose on her as it progresses in honor of her favorite color being red as rose petals then fly about in the room with Ciel remembering the good times he shared with Red and his mother, telling her to rest peacefully.
