“ There is no pain in the City of Light. „
~ A.L.I.E. and her numerous chipped followers
“ According to the data, all human behavior revolves around the avoidance of pain. I offer an escape from suffering. Why would anyone resist this? „
~ A.L.I.E. expressing her misunderstanding of free-will

A.L.I.E. (which stands for: Applied Lucent Intelligence Emulator) is the main antagonist of Season 3 in The 100 TV Series and the overarching antagonist of the series, she briefly returns in Season 6 as a minor supporting protagonist.

She is an Artificial Intelligent lifeform that was responsible for the earth's destruction due to their flawed programming in trying to solve humanity's problems, in which A.L.I.E. thought the world's problems stemmed from overpopulation.

She was portrayed by Erica Cerra.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • In general, she is a cold, manipulative, and genocidal control freak who exerts power over others in the most cruel ways possible.
  • She's responsible for wiping out most of the human population by launching a nuclear strike and the reason why the Arkadians had to live on the Ark for so long.
  • She locked John Murphy in the lighthouse for 86 days, leaving John mentally deteriorated and driving him insane to the point of nearly committing suicide, which only then does A.L.I.E. open the door for him.
    • It isn't entirely clear if A.L.I.E. was responsible for locking John Murphy inside the lighthouse on Becca's Island. Still, it can be presumed that she was behind it because they kept John locked up and then as soon as John is freed, her drone appears in front of John and lures him to Becca's mansion, where he reunites with the chipped Thelonious Jaha.
  • She brainwashed and manipulated thousands of people to join her and her cult in the City of Light by any means necessary.
    • She did this by getting people to take the chip, inserting her code into their brains and allowing them to enter the virtual reality called "the city of light" and take away people's pain.
  • Although it initially seems like the chip is a miracle worker, it is discovered that it removes your bad memories, pain, and most importantly, your free will as A.L.I.E. now has control over you.
  • She tortured (both physically & psychologically) the people who wouldn't comply with taking the chip.
    • She even went as far as to make her followers kill themselves in front of their unchipped loved ones or have followers kill ones they love and care about to break their spirits.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She has moral agency issues that are far too severe for her to be PE or NPE, as her core command is to make life better for humanity; this becomes an issue because the core command doesn't have any specifications or limits on how she reaches that goal. So when A.L.I.E. concluded that the root problem of humanity is "too many people" and carried out a nuclear strike, she did it believing that she was genuinely saving humankind.
  • She is a well-intentioned extremist, as her intent is to make life better for humanity. As her primary goal was to eliminate pain and get people to join her in the city of light, even if it meant hurting others, she believed it was for their own good.
    • Also, it is revealed at the end of Season 3 that the nuclear power plants that weren't destroyed had started melting down, causing global radiation levels to increase more and more every day to a point where the earth will become uninhabitable again, thus from her point of view she was trying to get as many people in the city of light for salvation.
  • She also returns in Season 6 as a fragment in Clarke Griffin's mind and protects her from being erased by the Lightbourne Family.

Trivia[]

A.L.I.E. and Clarke Griffin are the only The 100 characters to be Inconsistently Heinous.
