Gotham is an American crime television series[1] developed by Bruno Heller, based on characters appearing in and published by DC Comics in their Batman franchise, primarily those of Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. The series stars Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon.[2] Heller is the executive producer along with Danny Cannon, who also directed the pilot. Gotham received a series order from Fox on May 5, 2014,[3] and premiered on September 22, 2014.[4]

As originally conceived, the series would have served as a straightforward story of Gordon's early days on the Gotham City police force. The idea evolved not only to include the Bruce Wayne character, but will also tell the origin stories of several Batman villains, including Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Joker,[5] Poison Ivy,[6] Scarecrow,[7] Hugo Strange, Harvey Dent,[8] Mr. Freeze[9] and Victor Zsasz.[10] The first season order consisted of 16 episodes, which was later extended to a total of 22.[11]

Synopsis[]

A new recruit in Captain Sarah Essen's Gotham City Police Department, Detective James Gordon is paired with Harvey Bullock to solve one of Gotham's highest-profile cases: the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. During his investigation, Gordon meets the Waynes' son Bruce, now in the care of his Butler Alfred Pennyworth, which further compels Gordon to catch the mysterious killer. Along the way, Gordon must confront mobstress Fish Mooney, mafia led by Carmine Falcone, as well as many of Gotham's future villains such as Selina Kyle, Edward Nygma, and Oswald Cobblepot. Eventually, Gordon is forced to form an unlikely friendship with Wayne, one that will help shape the boy's future in his destiny of becoming a crusader.[5]

Gordon and Bullock investigate a child-trafficking ring where street kids are being abducted by Patti and Doug, two thugs of the Dollmaker posing as members of the Mayor's Homeless Outreach Program. Meanwhile, Oswald Cobblepot takes refuge in a rented trailer after leaving Gotham City. After Patti and Doug have gotten away with one of the front people getting apprehended, Mayor Aubrey James plans to find foster homes for the street kids. The Dollmaker's thugs return and hijack the bus of street kids with one of the passengers being Selina Kyle. After Bullock's interrogation one of the front-men that was associated with the Dollmaker, Gordon obtains a clue that leads to Trident International Shipping. 3 The Balloonman Dermott Downs John Stephens October 6, 2014 (2014-10-06) 4X6653
Detectives Gordon and Bullock track a vigilante targeting corrupt citizens and strapping them to weather balloons with his latest victim being Ronald Danzer, a politician who was involved in a ponzi scheme. Detectives Montoya and Allen question Gordon about what really happened to Cobblepot, who returns to town in order to get revenge on Fish Mooney. He gets a job at mafia don Sal Maroni's restaurant, being befriended by Maroni himself. "Balloonman" strikes again by targeting corrupt GCPD member Lt. Bill Cranston. Bullock and Gordon later trace the remaining missing balloons to Carl Smickers' apartment, making him a suspect. Mooney arranges for Falcone's comare Natalia to be in an accident. Bullock interrogates Smickers, who mentions never seeing the face to whom he gave the remaining balloons. After the sexually abusive Cardinal Quinn's death and finding a set of keys in the body of Lt. Bill Cranston, Gordon has an idea on who Balloonman is. Upon arriving at the old juvenile facility, Gordon and Bullock find another balloon, but get ambushed by Davis Lamond (Dan Bakkedahl), who holds Bullock at gunpoint and mentions the crimes of Danzer, Cranston, and Cardinal Quinn. He further reveals it is corruption like Mayor James' plan to relocate non-adoptable street kids to a prison that ultimately drove him to become the Balloonman. Bullock gets free and manages to attach the final weather balloon to Lamond with the intention of releasing the balloon, but Gordon grabs onto it and orders Bullock to shoot the balloon. After a short debate with Gordon, Bullock shoots the balloon. Before Lamond enters an ambulance, he warns Gordon that more vigilantes will follow in his path. At his apartment later, Gordon receives a surprise visit from Cobblepot.
4 Arkham TJ Scott Ken Woodruff October 13, 2014 (2014-10-13) 4X6654
At Gordon's apartment, Cobblepot states that the upcoming war will be for Arkham. Meanwhile, Councilman Ron Jenkins is approached by a hitman (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) who uses a telescope device with a blade in it on his aide and then kills the councilman with the same device. Gordon learns of the Arkham Plan when he visits Bruce Wayne, where Alfred mentions that Falcone and Mayor James are backing the project. Maroni's ally, Councilman Zeller, has been abducted by the same hitman who killed Jenkins and is burned alive at Arkham Asylum. Gordon tells Bullock and Essen that the Arkham District is a battleground between Falcone and Maroni. Upon visiting a prisoner who knows the hitman, Gordon and Bullock look for Richard Gladwell at an office building. As Gordon heads to the back, Gladwell works on his steel spike. Before Gordon could take action, Bullock calls him away to show him the files on Jenkins and Zeller, enabling Gladwell to flee. They find a paper that reads C.L.M. After an attack on Maroni's restaurant by three masked men, Cobblepot is promoted to restaurant manager by Maroni, following his action of saving the money and the death of the previous manager. It was discovered by Bullock that the real Gladwell was dead for five years and that the hitman was using his name. Gordon tells Bullock that they must find the hitman before the mob war erupts. Gordon figures out that Mayor James will be the next target, due to the C.L.M. referring to the initials of the officers sent to protect the mayor. Gordon ends up in a fight with the hitman until Bullock arrives to back him up. The hitman is then gunned down by Bullock and Gordon before he can finish his job. Meanwhile, Mooney pairs up two possible females for her nightclub job opening against each other where a female named Liza wins. Mayor James holds a press conference about the Arkham Plan. Falcone will handle small housing developments and Maroni will be refurbishing the Arkham Asylum. Meanwhile, the three masked robbers that attacked Maroni's restaurant were working for Cobblepot and are visited by their boss and killed by his poisoned canoli

On September 24, 2013, Fox announced that it had bypassed the traditional pilot phase and placed a straight-to-series order for Gotham, to be written and executive produced by Bruno Heller.[24] Danny Cannon was later announced as director for the project.[25]

Speaking of the project at the 2014 winter TCA press tour, Fox president Kevin Reilly described the series as "this operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality. This is not some adjunct companion series. This is the Batman franchise, just backing it up [in chronology]."[26] He added that the series is separate from any DC film universe.[27]

In January 2014, rumors arose that Donal Logue would portray Gordon in the series. Logue denied these rumors via Twitter.[28] Logue was eventually cast as Harvey Bullock.[12] In February 2014, Ben McKenzie was cast as James Gordon.[2] Later in the month, it was reported that production would begin in New York City in March 2014.[12] In early March 2014, David Mazouz was cast as Bruce Wayne, while Camren Bicondova was cast as Selina Kyle.[13] At the 2014 Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, DC's Jim Cunninham said that Renee Montoya would be a character on the show.[29] The first season was reported to consist of 16 episodes, rather than the standard 13 or 22.[30] Fox’s Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly stated, "We were only contractually obligated to order 13, and we ordered 16, because we think that’s the way that show, at least in its first iteration, will be very strong to arc to. Could we do more next season? We certainly could, but that’s where we’re starting with that one. That show is going to have a very strong, serialized element."[31] On October 13, Fox ordered an additional six episodes for the show, bringing the first season order to a full 22 episodes.[32]

The pilot was screened at the Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment panel at San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2014.[33] In July 2014, it was announced that Graeme Revell would be the composer for the series.[34]

Broadcast[]

The series premiered in New Zealand on TV2 on September 28, 2014.[35]

The Nine Network airs the show in Australia,[36] while CTV has acquired the broadcast rights for Canada.[37] Channel 5 will air Gotham in the United Kingdom [38] from October 13, while RTÉ Two will air the show in Ireland.[39] In September 2014, Warner Bros. Television Distribution sold the video on demand rights to the series to Netflix.[40]

Reviews[]

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season of the show a rating of 90% based on 80 reviews, with an average rating of 7.3/10. The site's consensus states, "High production values, a talented cast, and an appealingly stylized approach to the Batman mythos help Gotham overcome its occasionally familiar themes."[46] Metacritic gives the show a score of 71 out of 100, based on 34 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[47] In early October 2014, market research firm Survata polled more than 1,400 viewers to determine which of the 24 major TV premiers they were most interested to watch this fall, with "Gotham" taking top honors.[48] SideReel users have given the show a 4 out of 5 rating based on 911 ratings.[49]

David Hinckley of the New York Daily News praised the first episode for playing "like a 45-minute movie, with stunning visuals that never feel like a shrunken TV version of the Batman films against which it will inevitably be measured" and lauded Donal Logue's Harvey Bullock as a scene-stealer.[50] The San Jose Mercury News's Chuck Barney called the pilot "a fun, dark, moody and well-paced first hour" and Ben McKenzie's James Gordon a commanding lead, while saying Jada Pinkett Smith is "an absolute blast to watch."[51] Matt Brennan of Indiewire said that Gotham was "the perfect antidote to superhero fatigue", praising the "bright, pop-inflected aesthetic, with urban backdrops that appear as though cut out from the panels of a comic book."[52]
