Origins
In 2007, Laurel and Oliver Queen were dating. Unbeknownst to her, Oliver was cheating on her with her sister, Sara, and even took her on the Queen's Gambit with him. When tragedy struck, her boyfriend and sister's betrayal was revealed, along with the news that they may be dead. Her parents eventually separated, and Quentin began to have a drinking problem, forcing Laurel to become her own woman early. Laurel eventually became a legal-aid attorney, working for the CNRI (City Necessary Resources Initiative) in Starling City, where she met and befriended her coworker Joanna De La Vega. She also had a brief relationship with her friend Tommy Merlyn while still believing Oliver was dead.
Oliver's return
Five years later, Oliver Queen has been rescued from the island Lian Yu and was brought back to Starling City. Complications get in the way of a happy reunion, particularly the fact that not only was Oliver cheating on her with her sister, but he practically led Sara to her death, ruining their lives. Eventually, they reconcile.

Becoming Black Canary
When her sister Sara was murdered by an unknown individual, Laurel thought the mercenary Simon Lacroix had killed her, so she tried to avenge her, but was prevented by the Arrow who discovered that the mercenary was not in Star City when Sara was killed. Sara's death inspired Laurel to take up the Canary mantle and becomes the vigilante Black Canary while Oliver was missing in Nanda Parbat. Even with Oliver's disapproval at first, Laurel was trained by Ted Grant and Nyssa al Ghul, becoming a good fighter, and after defeating the new Count Vertigo, she becomes a permanent member of Team Arrow. She later meets Cisco Ramon at Star City Police Department, who gives her a device called "the canary cry" that she wears around her neck to simulate the sonic scream.

Death
In April 6, 2016, Black Canary and Team Arrow tried to prevent Damien Darhk's escape from Iron Heights, but he had already recovered his powers with Merlyn's help and fatally stabbs Laurel in the chest. She was taken to the Starling General Hospital, but eventually passed away of her wounds at 11:59 pm, moments after admitting to Oliver that she still loved him.[3]
After Laurel's death, Evelyn Sharp briefly pretended to be the Black Canary to avenge her parents, and Laurel's secret identity was revealed to the city, with a statue of the Canary being built in her honor. Team Arrow later recruited the metahuman Dinah Drake to succeed her as the Black Canary. Years later, Laurel inspired her Earth-2 doppelganger (formerly known as Black Siren) to also become the Black Canary on her Earth.
