Sméagol, better known as Gollum, is a major antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium.

He is a former hobbit who was deformed and corrupted by the One Ring, but with the help of Frodo Baggins, he was temporarily able to free himself from the influence of the Ring and his evil half.

He was portrayed by Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson’s adaptations.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • He helped Frodo and Sam get to Mordor after Frodo spared his life, and while his reason was originally pragmatic, he seemed to grow to be genuinely loyal to Frodo until deciding to betray him for the Ring.
  • He saved Frodo multiple times, most notably by pulling him out of the Dead Marsh and convincing him not to go into Mordor through the Black Gate.
  • Albeit somewhat begrudgingly, he attained food for the hobbits at Sam’s request.
  • While he mainly only wanted the Ring for himself, he made it clear that he also legitimately wanted to make sure it never ended up in Sauron’s hands again due to all of the destruction He could cause with it.
  • Though unintentionally, he was responsible for destroying the Ring and permanently banishing Sauron.
  • Additionally, in the Peter Jackson version, he was able to free himself from his evil half and only fell back into villainy due to the torture inflicted on him by Faramir.

Why Doesn't It Stand Out?[]

  • Despite his desire to keep the Ring from Sauron is arguably enough to pass the baseline, he heavily fails the admirable standard to almost every other character in the story, (most notably Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and Aragorn) all of whom did much more to achieve said goal, and while he was technically the one who destroyed the Ring, this was completely unintentional.
  • Although he had some genuinely heroic actions, he is still primarily an anti-hero whose main motivation was to obtain the One Ring for himself at any cost.
  • He eventually falls back into villainy and attempts to kill Frodo multiple times to get the Ring from him.
  • Even as a hero, he was quite a provocative jerk toward Sam.
