Chris, better known as the Hero Boy, is the main protagonist of the 1985 Christmas book The Polar Express and its 2004 film adaptation. He always tries to help children to get on the Polar Express Train to get to the North Pole.

He was portrayed by Tom Hanks (who also portrayed James the Conducter and the Hobo Ghost in the same film, Scott Turner in Turner & Hooch, the title character in Forrest Gump, Woody in the Toy Story franchise, John H. Miller in Saving Private Ryan, Paul Edgecomb in The Green Mile, Carl Hanratty in Catch Me If You Can, Viktor Navorski in The Terminal, Robert Langdon in Angels & Demons, Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Geppetto in the 2022 remake of Pinocchio), who only did his adult narrative voice and motion-capture, but his on-screen voice is done by Daryl Sabara, who also plays Juni Cortez in the Spy Kids franchise. He is modeled after Josh Hutcherson, who also played Jesse Aarons in Bridge to Terabithia and Walter in Zathura, another movie based on a book by Chris Van Allsburg.

  • While reluctant to climb aboard on the Polar Express. He changes his mind when the train starts moving to leave, and climbs aboard to go to the North Pole to see Santa Claus.
  • At the last stop for another passenger named Billy. He activates the emergency brakes to stop the train so he can get on after falling in the snow trying to catch up.
  • When Holly the Hero Girl lost her ticket and thought she was gonna get thrown off the train by James the Conductor taking her, he went to go save her by climbing on top of the coaches.
  • He was willing to have the Hobo Ghost help him get to the front of the train to rescue Holly and succeeded.
  • Helped Holly stop the train when a herd of caribous were blocking the tracks to get to the North Pole.
  • Saved both Holly and James by pulling them back on the front of the train when she almost fell off the train being on solid ice cracking, even though it was actually Hobo the whole time.
  • Followed both Holly and Billy when she heard bells ringing, then going on an adventure through the North Pole factory, ending up in Santa's giant present sack for his sleigh.
  • He rightfully earned the first gift of Christmas by returning one of the sleigh bells to Santa Claus, while also truly believing in him.
  • Never stopped believing in Santa Claus as he grew old, despite his sister no longer truly believing.
  • He has no corrupting factors.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • Despite doing many great things in the film. All of his heroic deeds amount to just bog-standard acts of kindness, and the standards of the movie itself are fairly low, as there's really no true villains in it.

  • He is the first character from The Polar Express to be HB.
