Trowa Barton (トロワ・バートン Torowa Bāton, derived from French trois, lit. "three") is the pilot of XXXG-01H Gundam Heavyarms in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and the XXXG-01HC Gundam Heavyarms Custom in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

Personality[]

The most experienced Gundam pilot and the only one of them born on Earth, Trowa is a quiet, but determined person. With patience and calmness, he will analyze a situation before acting. He hides his feelings well behind an impassive mask. Despite his stoic demeanor, Trowa developed a close friendship with Quatre Raberba Winner. Trowa is often symbolically affiliated with masks not only because of his neutrality and his talent for infiltrating enemy ranks, but also because of his job as a circus clown—a job where he wears a costume and painted mask. Trowa is also shown to have a strong connection with animals, as shown by when he first joined the circus and earned the friendship of one of the lions. When on the battlefield, Trowa attacks his enemies with utter ruthlessness and deadly accuracy.

History[]

Operation Meteor[]

He was the third among the five Gundam pilots sent to Earth to destroy OZ. He first attacked a spaceport. To cover himself, he would join the circus, where he would unknowingly reunite with his long-lost elder sister, Catherine Bloom. His next mission was an attack on the Corsica base. There he would meet the fourth pilot Quatre Raberba Winner, whom he would form a friendship with afterwards.

Trowa would meet the rest of the pilots during the attack on the New Edwards base, where they thought the OZ officials were gathering. In reality, it was actually a conference of Alliance officials discussing plans for peace talks with the colonies. At first his attack would almost hit Heero and Duo; after Heero assumingly completed the mission shooting down the OZ shuttle containing the Alliance officials, Duo would attempt to retaliate, resulting in the two briefly engaging each other before Wufei arrived and gave the scoop. Later on, he and Wufei would go on to chase Treize Khushrenada. Upon arrival, they damage the fleet, and Trowa dealt with the OZ troops in their way, while Wufei went to take on Treize. After the failure, the two would stick together for some time, before Wufei departed.

When OZ works on transporting the new Taurus suits, he plans his attack on his own like the other Gundam pilots, save for Wufei. He first carries his Gundam in a carrier, which gets shot down by OZ forces in the air. He pulls out his Heavyarms from the destroyed shuttle and takes out the Aries while descending. He the engages the ground units after landing, and later heads for the supply base. However, when Lady Une threatens a colony with one of OZ's satellites to pressure the Gundams pilots into handing over their machines, he, like the rest, stop fighting. After Doctor J, one of the Gundam scientists, shows himself to OZ and gives his order to Heero, Heero self-destructs his machine, along with attempting to sacrifice his life in the process, and Trowa then tells Quatre that they are withdrawing from no longer having the resolve to fight. Trowa picks up Heero's body from the ground and carries him in the hand of Heavyarms, bringing Heero back to the circus's living site where Catherine helps him recover for a month.

Trowa and Heero would converse, and the latter asks whether to follow the former's example in what to do in the future. Trowa lets out a laugh, when Heero warns him that such a strategy "hurt like hell". Later, the traveling circus gets booked to perform at an OZ base, and Trowa planned to take advantage of that opportunity. He convinces the circus leader to let him pull out his "performance", and he sneaks his Gundam into the base that night. When it was his time to shine, Trowa first shot down a carrier that was taking off and wreaked havoc on the base, scaring the audience away. While he held off the OZ mobile suits and continued to destroy things, Catherine and the circus leader were running to safety along with the OZ soldiers, and Catherine stops to see what Trowa was doing and realizes what he was going to do next. After causing heavy destruction, Catherine tried to appeal to Trowa to talk, but the latter was still intent on self-destructing and tries to warn her to stay back. Right about then, a Leo gets up and tries to aim at Trowa's Heavyarms, but Catherine was also in the line of fire. Trowa flips with his suit as he jumped in front of Catherine to protect her and then returns fire to the Leo. When he still displays intent to throw away his life, this enrages her to punch him in the face to get him into his senses, and she then explains about the value of his life and what his parents and friends would think about such decision. Trowa accepts her words. The next day when he departed with Heero, Catherine reprimands Heero for his strange advice to Trowa.

While on their way to search for Sylvia Noventa, the granddaughter of the late Field Marshal Noventa who died trying to secure the peaceful relationship with the colonies, Trowa and Heero end up in the middle of a battle between the Alliance forces and OZ in a town where Sylvia was residing. When an OZ Aries gets shot down by one of the Leos, Trowa knocks out the pilot, and Heero listens in on the OZ soldiers' communications through a stolen headset. Trowa moves his truck with his hidden Gundam into an underground route; when he eventually returns, he eliminates the rest of the OZ soldiers in the tunnel, while announcing that he was only trying to keep the Gundam's presence secret rather than actually siding with either side.

Later in the day, Trowa waits in his truck while Heero meets with Sylvia. After visiting Sylvia's grandmother the next day, Heero and Trowa head out again, and they later find themselves being followed. Trowa volunteers to distract the pursuers instead of Heero because of the latter's injured arm. While Heero stowed away in a truck transporting apples, Trowa lured the pursuers with a stolen motorcycle. Eventually, he backflips off the motorcycle and jumps onto a clothesline, leaving the vehicle to fall into the water and the pursuers to crash theirs into a streetlight pole. He later meets up with Heero in an empty warehouse, where Heavyarms was being hidden. They discuss about how to transport it now because of being watched; meanwhile, Lucrezia Noin overhears them and then offers to lend them her carrier. She tells the two about Zechs wanting to fight Heero again.

During the flight to Antarctica, the two stay in the mobile suit hangar and Heero tries to familiarize himself with Trowa's machine. At one point, the carrier is being pursued by a search team deployed by OZ. Noin goes down to try and rescue a comrade who was careless and got shot down, only to get cornered by the search team and the leader Inspector Acht. The crew them decide to try save Noin and do it anyways, even when Trowa advised against it. As a result, the carrier takes a hit, and Trowa goes out in his machine to take out the rest of the pursuers, until Acht is the one left. When Acht tries to report the location of Trowa's machine, Trowa finishes off Acht. After exiting his cockpit, Noin checks on Trowa to see if he's alright.

Mariemaia Rebellion[]

After the Eve Wars, he would spend the rest of his life at the circus with Catherine. However, a new threat arrives, and he returns to the battlefield once again. He takes on a few suspicious men outside the circus and finds out about the Barton Foundation. He goes undercover once again much like he did in OZ during Operation Meteor, and he finds that Wufei has joined the Mariemaia Army. After convincing Wufei and Dekim of his loyalty to the army and secretly aiding Heero and Duo, Trowa continues to aid his side from within and stops the colony X-18999 from descending to Earth. Afterwards, he escapes, and he, Duo, and Quatre meet together to backup Zechs and Noin. There, they fought the Mariemaia Army's Serpent mobile suits without causing lethal harm until they were out of ammunition and overwhelmed by the remaining Serpents. Right at that point, he and the others see Heero fire a few final shots from Wing Gundam Zero's buster rifle at the bunker where Dekim and Mariemaia were hiding in. After the conflict, he and the other pilots get rid of their Gundams out of no longer needing them, and he returns to his circus life.
