Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."

“ | I was abandoned by my mother, Mystique, as an infant. Despite our shared blood, I was too blue for her. Then I met Rogue years later. We could have been enemies or strangers. Instead, unlike our mother, we chose not to abandon each other. To let go of the past and simply be family. Blood is blood. Family is a choice. | „ |
~ Nightcrawler |
Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler, is one of the major supporting characters of 1992-97 animated superhero series X-Men: The Animated Series and its 2024 sequel series, X-Men '97. He is a circus performer turned monk who is Mystique's long-lost son and, in addition to his unusual appearance, has the power to teleport. An occasional ally of the X-Men during the original animated series, he officially joins the team during X-Men '97.
He is voiced by Adrian Hough.
History[]
X-Men: The Animated Series[]
Nightcrawler was a monk living in a Swiss abbey, persecuted by his superior and the townspeople who believed him to be a demon. Gambit, Rogue, and Wolverine helped him through his trials.
Later, he was sent a letter by his birth mother that she was going to be harmed if he did not meet with her captor. He decided to get help from the X-Men. Wolverine, Rogue, and Jubilee were around to help. At the dam where he was suppose to meet up with his mother, he discovered she was the mutant criminal Mystique. His mother told him that she adopted Rogue but before that she had two sons, one of them was him and the other was the one who organized the whole thing: Graydon Creed. Creed wanted to destroy them to prove himself to the Friends of Humanity. Kurt asked Mystique to give him answers and she did, she told him about his birth and when she abandoned him and coldly said she didn't want him, although Kurt said he would pray for her and for god to forgive her.
X-Men '97[]
Kurt eventually joined Genosha's council as outreach for any communities of faith. He would later save Rogue and Magneto during the Sentinel attacks, and be harmed afterward. Following the attack Kurt would join the X-Men as an official team member.
Abilities[]
Kurt has the ability to teleport himself, the clothes he is wearing, and within limits a certain amount of additional mass which is in contact with him. He is an Olympic-class acrobat thanks to his flexible spine that allows him to perform contortionist-like feats and to go long periods in a semi-crouching position without injury.
Kurt is also a skilled swordsman. He can fight with three swords at once, using both of his hands and tail.
Personality[]
Kurt is kind to all and sees everyone as worthy of a chance. While like Rogue and Magneto he's at ground zero for the Genosha massacre, unlike them he doesn't go off the deep end in the name of revenge. Likewise, he is quite willing to forgive Mystique for abandoning him when he was an infant and even said he feels sorry for her. He also tries to reason with his half-brother Graydon Creed, who loathes mutants.
