Mack is responsible for transporting Lightning McQueen to all his races. McQueen exhorts Mack to drive through the night to his tiebreaker race with Chick Hicks and The King in Los Angeles, despite federal DOT regulations which legally grant Mack ten hours daily of much-needed off-duty rest alongside "all those sleeping trucks" at the last truck stop on I-40. Lightning hopes to reach the venue first and to hang out with the Dinoco team. As a result, Mack falls asleep and, distracted by the Delinquent Road Hazards (who attempt to push him off the road to the shoulder), loses Lightning. He is seen on television as he arrives in California and discovers that McQueen is missing.
Later, Mack arrives in Radiator Springs after Doc reveals Lightning's location and is both very relieved ("Thank the Manufacturer, you're alive!") and apologetic ("I'm so sorry I lost you, boss. I'll make it up to you..."). Lightning, who is glad to see him, forgives him. Mack takes the reluctant McQueen out of Radiator Springs to compete in the race.
At the final race, he was to act as McQueen's pit crew before the Radiator Springs folks came. During the credits, he watches parodies of other Pixar movies and notes that all of them feature a character played by John Ratzenberger, and amusingly, he is voiced by Ratzenberger as well ("Wait a minute, here. They're just usin' the same actor over and over! What kinda cut-rate production is this?!").
Cars 2[]
Mack makes a couple minor appearances as part of McQueen's Piston Cup racing team. He also has some slight differences in his design in this film, possibly to take on McQueen's own redesign: while in the original film his cap-shaped wind deflector is white, here it is red. The design of his trailer is also different.
In the sequel, he is briefly seen at the beginning when McQueen comes back to Radiator Springs, where he says one of his only two lines, "Oh, these best friend greetings are getting longer every year." He doesn't accompany him to the World Grand Prix due to being on vacation. At the end he talks with Lizzie and says the other of his only two lines of the movie, "Oh, those two are perfect for each other."
Cars 3[]
Mack returns in Cars 3, but like in the first two films, remains Lightning McQueen's driver. In the opening scene, he taps Lightning's trailer, asking his boss if he was ready for his race.
Four months after McQueen's accident, Mack drives him, Luigi and Guido to Rust-eze Racing Center, where his boss planned on training to boost his speed to beat Jackson Storm. After an unsuccessful week training under Cruz Ramirez in both the racing center and on Fireball Beach, McQueen decided to go to Thunder Hollow to race at the dirt track. When Luigi and Guido advised going to a public place where the press would easily recognize him, Mack assure the group that he was a master of disguise. To that end, Mack camouflaged his cap and his trailer to resemble a party truck and upon arriving at Thunder Hollow, had Luigi cover McQueen in mud. Unfortunately, as they all discovered, the racetrack was actually a demolition derby, which Cruz won but McQueen was exposed to the crowd.
As they were leaving Thunder Hollow, Mack uncomfortably had to listen to McQueen taking his anger out on Cruz, telling her she's no racer and accidentally breaks her trophy, causing her to order Mack to pull over, forcefully opening the trailer when Mack hesitated. Cruz then told everyone that she dreamed of becoming a racer but lost her confidence at her first race. She resigns as McQueen's trainer and heads back to the racing center.
Mack later parked underneath an underpass to retire for the night while McQueen considered his future as he watched Storm setting a new lap record on TV, leading him to calling Mater, who advised him to seek out Doc Hudson's old crew chief Smokey in Thomasville. Thus, early next morning, Mack manages to catch up to Cruz, upon which McQueen persuades her rejoin them. Afterwards, they proceeded onto Thomasville, where upon Mack pulls over upon arriving at Thomasville Racetrack.
After a week training under Smokey, Mack had to pull McQueen to reach the deadline for the Florida 500.
During the credits, Mack becomes both McQueen and Cruz's driver with a new trailer sporting Cruz's legendary flip.
Video games[]
Cars: The Videogame[]
In Cars: The Videogame, the 2006 Piston Cup season is starting soon, so Mack tells McQueen to get some practice by competing in road races and helping his friends around town. Mack transports McQueen to all five of the season's races, each time greeting McQueen with a positive attitude.
Before the fourth Piston Cup race at Smasherville Speedway, Mack is traveling along Interstate 40 while McQueen is practicing around town. Boost, DJ, Wingo, and Snot Rod work together to perform a heist, and they manage to make off with Lightning's Gear by putting Mack to sleep, opening his trailer, and collecting the goods. Right as they start to make their getaway, Snot Rod unleashes a sneeze, waking Mack up in time to figure out what has happened. He phones Sheriff in Radiator Springs, who informs McQueen of the problem. Seeking revenge, McQueen races out to the Interstate, where he catches up to the delinquents and steals his gear back. The four are arrested and brought to the Radiator Springs Municipal Impound, where they admit they were hired by Chick Hicks.
In the hub world, Mack stays parked outside Flo's V8 Café, greeting McQueen when he passes by. He is mostly tired, yawning to get rest.
Cars: Radiator Springs Adventures[]
In Cars: Radiator Springs Adventures, Mack appears during Drive-In And Out, as one of the characters the player must clear a path for.
Mater and the Ghostlight[]
In Mater and the Ghostlight, Mack appears at Flo's V8 Cafe with all the other townsfolk, listening to the Sheriff tell the story of the Ghostlight, After the story is over, he helps the others pull a prank on Mater by putting a lamp on his tow hook.
Cars: Mater-National Championship[]
While Mack does not appear in Cars: Mater-National Championship, some data found within the game's files seems to suggest that Mack was intended to appear.
The World of Cars Online[]
In The World of Cars Online, Mack could be found outside of Flo's V8 Cafe, greeting customers.
Cars: Race-O-Rama[]
Mack does not play a large role in Cars: Race-O-Rama. He appears in Mack Track Challenge, where the player must use his trailer to do a big jump. Mostly in the game, he is the transporter that helps the player get to different places in the game.
Cars 3: Driven to Win[]
Mack is an unlockable playable character in Cars 3: Driven to Win, making his playable debut in a Cars game. He is unlocked by collecting the 10 Mack hats that are spread across the Thomasville Playground map.
Personality[]
Mack is incredibly loyal to his friends, particularly McQueen. As Lightning's transporter, Mack does his best to adhere to the race car's wants, though their wishes do not always line up. Mack supports Lightning in times of need, such as when Lightning did not have a pit crew at the tie-breaker race in Los Angeles, and Mack stepped in to serve until Hudson and more of McQueen's friends showed up.
Mack thinks positively about his job, and he is always eager to transport McQueen to his next race. He seems to enjoy long road trips, especially when he is able to listen to music. The music can be distracting to Mack, however, and he often has trouble staying awake when driving late at night. He usually drives the speed of traffic along the highway in the lane that he is in but can inadvertently drive slower when he is drowsy.
Additionally, Mack can occasionally act childish, doing things like making funny faces to his reflection on the back of a tanker truck.
Powers and abilities[]
Mack is a very strong vehicle, allowing him to pull Lightning's trailer with ease. In Cars 3, Mack is very good in creating clever disguises.
Mack also has racing abilities, being able to hold his own in road races against his friends, as seen in Cars 3: Driven to Win. He can also deploy and shoot weapons like Missiles and Machine Guns.
Trivia[]
In the sequel, Mack has the least amount of dialogue out of all of John Ratzenberger's Pixar roles because he only had two lines.
Mack is a 1980s-era Mack Super-Liner truck.
When Mack watches the Cars-parodies of previous Pixar movies, he thought whoever did the voice of Hamm, P.T. Flea, and the Yeti as cars is one great actor until he realized they used the same voice actor in all movies and wonders, "What kind of a cut-rate production is this?" This is a reference to John Ratzenberger (who portrays Mack) of having to portray at least one character in every Pixar movie. In fact, Mack is nearly breaking the fourth wall.
At the time of the release of Cars 2, he has the least amount of dialogue in the film out of all of John Ratzenberger's roles because he only had two lines, which together are shorter than the Underminer's line in The Incredibles. However, the record was later broken by Yeti in Monsters University, who only had a single line.
Mack appears in the deleted scene of the Paris race for Cars 2, in McQueen's pit, which possibly means that he was intended to have a bigger role in the film.
The wind deflector on Mack's roof actually resembles a trucker cap, which is often worn by many truck drivers in real life. This is extremely noticeable due to the prominent visor protruding above his windshield (eyes).
Mack is the only Piston Cup hauler to be a Mack truck, whereas the other haulers are Aeroliner Semi Haulers (for example Gray's model). Despite this, his trailer is the same design as the others, although strangely enough, it is the only that lacks a satellite dish.
He is also the only Mack Trucks vehicle to appear in the franchise. This is could be to show how he is different and unique. Despite this, its still likely there are more of his make out there.
The original Mack Truck playset of him released in 2005 (one year before the film was released) is the most accurate look to his one in the film, as it is long and includes many of the interior shown in the film.
In The Rookie comics produced by Boom! studios, its revealed that Mack was a moving van working for a company named Eggman Movers and is actually a reference to trademark Eggman Movers from movie Toy Story, especially the moving van from the same company shown in the latter. Not only just that, there is also a common misconception is that the name is named after the Sonic the Hedgehog villain, Dr. Eggman. The character was not known by this name in anglosphere until 1998 of the release of Sonic Adventure. At the time the film was released (1995), he was known as Dr. Robotnik.
Mack and Lizzie are, with Fillmore, the only inhabitants of Radiator Springs that didn't participate to the final battle against the Lemons in England at the end of the second film.
In the first film, Mack's trailer that McQueen rides in as transport originally had trophies, memorabilia, and even McQueen merchandise inside but in the third film, they're all removed. This was presumably because McQueen realized that trophies aren't important to him anymore since it was about helping others and it could be implied that most of the merchandise were either given away, put into the Hudson Hornet Racing Museum, or sent to Rust-Eze Training Center presumably because Sterling wanted McQueen to be used for product endorsements so his legacy would live on should McQueen lose.
Mack resembles Oliver Overdrive from Steady Eddie; both have similar truck designs, both are red, both wear caps, and both have thier eyes placed on thier windshields.
For some reason, the dog-shaped hood ornament on Mack's hood isn't car-ified.
