MAIA is a minor character in the video game Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. She is a robot that used to serve Lyric the Last Ancient before turning on him and seeking to stop his plan to destroy organic life. She eventually found allies in form of Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower, and while the three of them only slowed Lyric down for a thousand years, she later helped insure that he would be defeated once and for all.
She was voiced by Cindy Robinson, who voiced Amy Rose in the same game.
Biography[]
Past[]
A thousand years ago, MAIA was in charge of Lyric's weapons facility. At some point, she went rogue and sought to prevent her master from destroying organic life, but Lyric was seemingly unaware of her treachery. Eventually, she met Sonic and Tails who were transported to her time by MAIA's future self. After explaining the situation to her, the heroes helped her get control over a Sentinel, which she used to let the two get to the room where the map with Chaos Crystals locations was stored, and went on to destroy the facility.
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]
In the present, MAIA, still in the ruins of the facility, came across Amy and Knuckles. Realizing that neither of them were Sonic, she asked for his location, which Knuckles revealed by accident. Due to Amy's insistence, she had to explain the reason she needed to meet Sonic for. After meeting Sonic and Tails, she explained to them that they could find the map they searched for in the past, and had the heroes power up the facility to activate the time machine there. While Sonic and Tails were distracted by a fight with Shadow, they nevertheless reached their point for destination, creating a stable time loop. MAIA isn't seen afterwards, but it's presumed that she brought Sonic and Tails back into the present.
Personality[]
Despite being a machine, MAIA seems to have a strong sense of justice, as she willingly went against her master's plans for world domination and genocide and did everything in her power to stop him. Even a thousand years later, she worked to make sure Lyric would be defeated in both past and present, further showing her dedication to upholding justice.
Trivia[]
- Given Q-N-C refers to her as "a MAIA unit", the MAIA seen in the game may not be one of a kind.
- An unused character profile for MAIA states that her name is an acronym for "Manufacturing Artificial Intelligence Administrator".
- MAIA can be considered a counterpart of sort to Tikal the Echidna from the main series, as both are characters originating from distant past who helped stop a world-destroying villain in the past and transported present-day heroes to the past to reveal important information to them.
