Lain is a minor, but influential character in the Netflix TV Show The Dragon Prince. He is the father of Rayla and the husband of Tiadrin, who was one of the members of the Dragonguard alongside his wife, who were meant to protect the egg of the Dragon Prince. He and Tiadrin were also the only members to stay and fight against Viren when everyone else ran away.
He was voiced by Tyrone Savage.
Biography[]
Sometime in his life, Tiadrin met an elf named Tiadrin, and fell in love with her, they would later have a child which they would name Rayla, whom they loved deeply. Alongside his wife, Lain was chosen to protect the egg of the Dragon Prince.
He and Tiadrin were forced to leave Rayla due to their duties and had their best friends Ethari and Runaan take care of her while they were gone, while Rayla askes why they would leave her, they said they were doing this for the good of their kind. Rayla then tried to convince them to come with them, but they told her that she was too young and they cared about her too much to put her life in danger.
Lain then asked Tiadrin if it was necessary to leave her, but she told him that they needed to fullfil their duty and that there was no other way to do it. They would then go to the Storm Spire to protect the egg of Avizandum and Zubeia, the Dragon King and Queen.
One day, Avizandum was killed by Lord Viren and King Harrow, and while all the other members of the Dragonguard ran away, Tiadrin and Lain were the only ones who decided to stay to fight against Viren, they tried to give the egg of the Dragon Prince to one of the members who were going to leave, but he refused as he believed it would make him a target.
They would then try to attack Viren when he entered the room where the egg was without him noticing, but he does and the three have a fight, with Viren winning. When Viren was about to destroy the egg, however, Tiadrin convinced him into sparing it by saying that it could be useful for his use of dark magic in an attempt to save it.
Viren decides to keep the egg intact, and as a way to "thank" them, Viren presumably put them in coins and added them to his collection of elves that he put in the same fate. Due to the fact that no one found out what happened to them, Tiadrin and Lain were accused to be cowards and were made invisible to the eyes of other Moonshadow elves in case they ever returned.
Rayla would feel ashamed over her parents' apparent cowardnice, and believed that they should have died trying to protect the egg, but after she found out about their true fate with the help of Callum, Rayla would come to understand that her parents were selfless and love them again. They are also briefly seen in Rayla's nightmare in Through the Moon, where they were frozen in ice alongside Callum by Viren.
Lain's coin would be used by Claudia to force Rayla to release Terry, whom Rayla was holding hostage, alongside Tiadrin and Runaan's. Claudia seemingly tried to throw the coins to lava, but it was revealed that there was just rocks and Claudia still had the coins, but Terry convinced her to give Rayla the coins as he called her out on how wrong it was. Several weeks later, after Rayla was able to get two quasar dimonds, which allowed people to escape from cursed coins, she went to the world between life and death.
There, she found her parents, who were happily dancing. They then see Rayla, with her reminding them of the events that had previously happened. Tiadrin then wondered if it was a good idea to have given the egg of the Dragon Prince to Viren, but Rayla assures her mother that it was as if she didn't Rayla wouldn't have found it and, with the help of Callum and Ezran, returned Azymondias to his mother.
Lain and Tiadrin express pride in their daughter, before she gives them their cursed coins, as she knew that she had to say goodbye and allow them to go to the afterlife as she couldn't free them without leaving one or the other. She starts crying and expresses her wish that things were different, but they assure Rayla that they are going to be fine and be happy together, while also telling her that they love her and that she was going to live a long and great life. The two then hug and leave to the afterlife.
