The Empire of Man, also simply known as The Empire, is a powerful Human nation and the main protagonists of the Warhammer Fantasy franchise. It is founded by Sigmar who would serve as their worshipful patron deity. Their Warhammer 40,000 counterpart is the Imperium of Man.
The Empire was established by the warrior-king and ascended deity Sigmar, emerging from the primitive tribes of human barbarians who inhabited the future lands of the Empire over 2,500 years ago. While the people of the Empire may not match the Dwarfs in craftsmanship or engineering, nor the High Elves in magic, they are not constrained by tradition to the same degree as the Elder Races, allowing them to continually advance culturally, technologically, and magically.
Untouched by any external or internal threats, the Empire draws its strength from the faith, sense of righteousness, and indomitable spirit of its citizens, coupled with the ruthless efficiency of its military and religious orders. As the most significant and powerful realm of the Old World, the Empire is governed by a monarch known as the "Emperor of Man" or simply "emperor," comprised of the descendants of ancient human tribes united by the legendary warrior Sigmar Heldenhammer after the Battle of Black Fire Pass more than 2,500 years ago.
After his death, Sigmar was worshipped as a deity by his people, and his vow to provide eternal support from the Men of the Empire to the Dwarfs remains in effect today. This pivotal act strengthened the bond between Men and Dwarfs and sowed the seeds for the flourishing Empire through trade between the two races.
History[]
The Empire was established by Sigmar Heldenhammer. Upon its creation, the traditional lands of the tribes unified by Sigmar were officially designated as the imperial provinces. After Sigmar vanished in 50 IC, the Elector system was introduced, allowing the provincial leaders to elect a new Emperor from among their ranks.
For over 2,500 years, the Empire has persisted, weathering numerous invasions, plagues, and civil conflicts.
Government[]
The reigning Emperor is Karl Franz of House Holswig-Schliestein, who was elected and crowned in the year 2502 IC. While the Emperor serves as both the head of state for the Empire and the supreme commander of its military forces, the true authority within the Empire resides with the ten Elector Counts, of whom the Emperor is one.
When an Emperor passes away, the throne does not automatically transfer to his successor. Instead, a new Emperor is chosen during an election involving the 15 Electors: the ten Elector Counts, the Elder of the Moot, the Ar-Ulric, and the Grand Theogonist along with his two Arch Lectors. Each elector casts a vote, and the candidate who receives the majority of votes ascends to the throne.
The Emperor acts as the leader and is considered the first among equals among the powerful and autonomous Elector Counts. His authority is significantly constrained by his inability to enforce his decrees in the semi-autonomous provinces, where the Elector Counts can largely ignore his commands.
A prudent Emperor understands that attempting to subjugate the Elector Counts through intimidation or violence is fraught with peril, often leading to open rebellion and civil strife. Instead, fostering their respect and loyalty through exemplary conduct and just governance is typically the most effective approach.
