What's the point of being alive if it's not to make others happy?
~ Dan Lewis, Doctor Who: The Halloween Apocalypse

Daniel "Dan" Lewis is the son of Eileen and Neville Lewis, a companion of the Thirteenth Doctor and the main tritagonist of Series 13: Flux and the 2022 Specials of Doctor Who.

An ordinary resident of Liverpool, Dan tends to put others needs before his own. However, Dan's life changes after becoming embroiled in the Flux crisis and meeting the Doctor.

He is portrayed by John Bishop who also played Lewis Loud.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Dan was born an Aries in either late 1979 or early 1980, to Eileen and Neville Lewis. As an adult, Dan lived in the Anfield district of Liverpool at 37 Granger Street and supported Liverpool F.C..

Sometime around mid-2000s, Dan was to get married, only for his fiancee to break off their engagement two days before their wedding as she could not bear spending the rest of her life with him and believed that she could do better.

Dan surprised his friend Diane, who he calls Di with a skinny latte as she was leaving work. The pair went on a walk around Liverpool. When she asked him why he wasn't married, he told her about what had happened with his fiancee.

Dan regularly took groups round the Museum of Liverpool in an unofficial capacity, against the wishes of Museum management. Though Diane had a close personal relationship with Dan, Alan threatened to ban him from the site permanently.

Dan volunteered at Jenning Street Food Bank, but refused to take home soup for himself when offered, even though he had no food at home.

Series 13: Flux[]

Dan first appeared in the post-credits scene of the 2021 New Year special "Revolution of the Daleks", where he is told his horoscope by his friend.

Following the 2021 Dalek civil war, Dan's friend read out Dan's horoscope, which foretold that he would find surprises later that year, that the colour blue and the letter D would be important and that thirteen would be his lucky number. He was told to be prepared for action and to remember that, no matter what, it would not be the end of the world. After his friend finished, Dan closed the rear doors of his Ford Transit, turned, and smiled.

Dan next appears in the first episode of Series 13, "The Halloween Apocalypse" where he is giving a group of people a tour of The Museum of Liverpool. Just then, his friend Diane (who works for the museum) appears and escorts him out, saying that he needs to stop pretending to be a tour guide or he will be banned from the museum. The pair agree to go out for a drink later. Dan is then seen at his real job at a food bank where he turns down the offer of soup by his colleague, stating that other people need it more than him. After returning home, it is revealed that Dan does not have much food in his house and gives the last sweets there to trick or treaters. Afterwards, Dan is taken away by Karvanista, a member of the Lupari, a race of dog-like creatures and is taken from Earth. Unbeknownst to Dan, the reason that Karvanista took him was because Lupari are species bonded with humans and are taking them from Earth to save them from The Flux. Dan is rescued by The Doctor and her companion Yasmin "Yaz" Khan, who take him to their ship the Tardis and give Dan his shrunken house (which was the result of a trap set by Karvanista after taking Dan). As The Flux gets closer to Earth, The Doctor has Karvanista and the other Lupari form a shield around Earth to provide it. However the Tardis is unable to get behind the shield and appears to be consumed by The Flux.

Dan next appears in the second episode "War of the Sontarans" where he, The Doctor and Yaz end up in The Crimean War where they meet Mary Seacole and discover that the British army are fighting Sontarans instead of Russians. However soon after, Dan and Yaz are separated from The Doctor and are send to different places. Dan ends up back in Liverpool where he is chased by Sontarans, but is saved by his parents Neville and Eileen, who knock the Sontarans out by hitting their probic vents with a frying pan and wok. Dan learns that the Sontarans have made a base at Liverpool Docks and infiltrates it. After getting into one of the ships, he is confronted by a Sontaran, but manages to knock it out by hitting it's probic vent with the wok. He is soon confronted by more Sontarans, but is saved by Karvanista, who sents the ship to crash into the other ones to make them disappear from time. Dan and Karvanista manage to get out from the ship by escaping through its waste chute and land in the river Mersey below. The Doctor soon arrives and Dan goes with her to find Yaz, where they find her in The Temple of Atropos on the planet Time where they find her and a man named Vinder being used as Mouri by Swarm (who The Doctor battled during her time as an agent for The Division, memories of which where erased from her many years ago) and his sister Azure. Dan and The Doctor watch on helplessly as Swarm snaps his fingers to make time go through Yaz and Vinder, which could kill them.

In the following episode "Once, Upon Time", The Doctor, in order to save Yaz and Vinder, places herself and Dan onto two of stands where the Mouri are in order to send them, Yaz and Vinder into a time stream. During this, Dan finds himself having a coffee with Diane who asks him why he did not meet her for their drink. After the time steam is fixed, Dan and the others return to The Temple of Atropos where Dan discovers that Swarm and Azure are holding Diane captive. As they leave the temple, The Doctor assures Dan that Diane will be rescued. After returning Vinder to his planet, Dan, The Doctor and Yaz watch in horror as a Weeping Angel comes out of Yaz's phone and takes control of the Tardis.

In "Village Of The Angels", The Doctor gets rid of the Weeping Angel by rebooting the Tardis. The trio exit the Tardis and find themselves in a village called Medderton near Devon in 1967. They meet an elderly couple named Gerald and Jean, who are looking for their missing 10-year-old great-niece Peggy. Dan and Yaz help to look for Peggy, only to encounter another Weeping Angel, which sends back to Medderton in 1901 where they find Peggy, who shows them that the village is slowly crumbling apart in space. They come across another Weeping Angel and also Gerald and Jean (who had also been sent back to 1901 by a Weeping Angel), who come into contact with the Weeping Angel and are killed. Dan, Yaz and Peggy later come across an energy barrier showing them Medderton in 1967, but cannot pass through it as it would disintegrate them as Dan found out by throwing a stick through it. On the 1967 side of the energy barrier, they see an elderly woman named Mrs. Hayward, who reveals herself to be an adult Peggy, who remained in 1901 and grew up by 1967. Dan, Yaz and Peggy are then joined by a man named Professor Eustacius Jericho, who had also been sent back from 1967 by a Weeping Angel. On the 1967 side of the energy barrier, the Doctor appears and learns that the Weeping Angels wish to bring her back to the Division and begin to transform her. Dan has to stop Yaz from going through the energy barrier to get to the Doctor (as she would have been disintegrated) and watches in horror the Doctor is turned into a Weeping Angel.

In the following episode "Survivors Of The Flux", Dan, Yaz and Jerico have been trapped in the past for three years and have been travelling the world to try to discover when the end of the world will come (which they know is the 5th December, but not the year), evading countless assassins. Their travels lead them to Joseph Williamson and the mysterious tunnels he dug under Liverpool. Williamson had discovered in his excavation several doorways that led to various other places due to the Flux. Soon after, a group of Sontarans come through one of the tunnels and start to shoot at the group. The reason this happened was because an alien known as The Grand Serpent had lowered Earth's defence by closing down U.N.I.T. (a group who protect Earth from alien attacks and are longtime allies of the Doctor) in order to allow the Sontarans to invade Earth at different points in time.

In the series finale "The Vanquishers", Yaz, is able to defeat the Sontarans by opening one of the other doorways, which unleash death rays that kill the Sontarans. Dan, Yaz, Jericho and Williamson then met Kate Stewart (who had led U.N.I.T. and is the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the previous leader of U.N.I.T and old friend of the Doctor) who scans Dan and Yaz and discovers that they have been in the Tardis. Just then the Doctor (who is split in three different places) appears and learns from the others about the Sontarans. Dan aids the Doctor in travelling back to 1967 to recruit a woman named Claire Brown (who was send back to the 1960s by a Weeping Angel and whom the Doctor encountered in "The Halloween Apocalypse" and "Village Of The Angels") to help them defeat the Sontarans. Dan and Yaz go with the Doctor to a Sontaran ship in Chile where they find another version of the Doctor being interrogated by The Grand Serpent (who is in league with the Sontarans) and save her. Dan also rescues Karvanista (who had also been captured) and learns that the Sontarans had killed the other Lupari, leaving Karvanista as the last of his kind. Dan later reunites with Diane after the Doctor saves her and Vinder after that had been placed inside a Passenger. After the Sontarans are consumed by the Flux, which is then placed inside the Passenger, Dan, Yaz and the Doctor bid Karvanista, who has teamed up with Vinder his life partner Bel. They also drop off Kate and Claire on present day Earth. Sometime later, Dan is seen again pretending to be a tour guide at The Museum of Liverpool. Dan then meets with Diana and says that they can make up for the drink they missed because of what happened. However, Diane, because of the experiences, turns down the offer. Dan then leaves the museum where he meets the Doctor and Yaz, who offer him to join them officially, which he happily accepts.

After Flux[]

Eve of the Daleks[]

Dan next appears in the 2022 New Year Special where he, The Doctor and Yaz leave the Tardis to reset (to remove the damage caused by the Flux) and arrive at the basement of ELF Storage in Manchester on New Year's Eve 2021, five minutes before midnight. The Doctor's sonic screwdriver detects a temporal disturbance two floors up from where the trio are, resulting in them going to investigate. They come across the body of a man named Nick, who the Doctor discovers was killed by a Dalek after scanning Nick with the sonic screwdriver. The trio find the Dalek after it kills ELF Storage's owner Sarah, before being shot by the Dalek. Moments later, the trio are alive again and emerge from the Tardis as it is resetting, which makes Dan ask if they have de-ja-vu before they go to find Nick, who also alive again but only find his belongings on the floor. The trio once again find Nick after he is killed by the Dalek and also discovered that the Dalek has also killed Sarah again. The Dalek appears and says that the entrance to ELF Storage has been secured and there is no escape and there was a distribance in time, which resulted in a time reset, but this moment is the correction and exterminates the trio again.

Time is resented again, making the trio realize that they are in a time loop, though Dan calls it Groundhog Day and go to find Nick again. They find Nick with Sarah and introduced themselves with the Doctor explaining what the Dalek just before the Dalek appears and begins to open fire on them. The group hid in Nick's Storage unit with the Dalek telling them that it is patient and will wait for them to come out. As the Doctor tries to find a way out, Dan and Yaz witness Sarah berate Nick for keeping items from his ex-girlfriends in his storage unit, saying that he should just throw them away. Dan and The others witness Nick leave the unit and try to make the Dalek kill him but spare the others. The Dalek shots Nick, but the Doctor manages to close the unit to prevent the Dalek shooting the others. Discovering that the time loop decreases a minute every time and that the fifth floor may have something to defeat the Dalek, the group allow the Dalek to exterminate them again before becoming alive again and heading to the fifth floor.

After learning that another Dalek has appeared in ELF Storage's reception, Dan goes to "kept it busy" whilst the Doctor and Yaz continue on. Dan finds the second Dalek and taunts it whilst dodging it's blasts. The Dalek discovers that Dan is a friend of the Doctor and he is delaying it and exterminates him. Dan is restored again in the next time reset (after the Doctor learns that the Tardis resting caused the time loop) where he, the Doctor and Yaz meet with Sarah, who stays with Dan and Yaz whilst the Doctor retrieves Nick, who tricks the two Daleks into killing each other. The group make a plan to destroy the Daleks (who blame the Doctor for destroying the Dalek fleets with the Flux, despite the Doctor telling them that it was the Sontarans who did it) by blowing up ELF Storage by using explosives stored on the fifth floor by Sarah's co-worker Jeff in the next loop before being exterminated by three Daleks,

In the next loop, the Doctor instructs Dan and Yaz to stay in basement whilst she goes upstairs. After the Doctor leaves, Dan reveals to Yaz that during the years they were in the past, he realised that Yaz had romantic feelings for the Doctor and says that Yaz should tell her that, saying that he took too long to tell someone (referring to Diane) that he liked them and then the universe ended and that he does not want that to happen to Yaz. Just then, they are exterminated again by two Daleks. In the next loop, the Doctor finds that the basement has fireworks and tasks Dan with helping her and sends Yaz to get Sarah and Nick. After Yaz leaves, Dan tells the Doctor about Yaz's feelings for her. After being joined by Yaz, Sarah and Nick, Dan and the Doctor tell them that the last loop will be a decoy loop, giving the. Daleks false information and change what they predict. The three Daleks appear and say that the Doctor cannot escape them as the time loop has almost closed and exterminate the group. On the next loop, the group set the plan to action and allow the Daleks to exterminate them again.

On the final loop, Dan and the others place the explosives with the fireworks in the basement. The Doctor sends the others ahead whilst she prepares to set off the explosives with Sarah's phone. Dan and the others are then joined by the Doctor and escape ELF Storage just before it explodes (after one of the Daleks shots the fireworks and explosives after believing that the group were behind them), destroying the Daleks. Dan, the Doctor and Yaz then return to the restored Tardis and leave to find the lost treasure of Flor de la Mar.

Legend of the Sea Devils[]

Dan next appeared in the Spring 2022 special where he, The Doctor and Yaz arrive in 19th century China where they encounter Pirate Queen Madam Ching, who inadvertently frees the leader of a group of Sea Devils (a race of aquatic humanoid reptiles who ruled Earth before humans evolved and whom The Doctor had encountered before (in her third and fifth incarnations)) from a statue.

The Sea Devils plan to reclaim Earth by flooding the planet and wiping out humanity. Fortunately, Dan and the others are able to prevent this.

Afterwards, Dan, The Doctor and Yaz relax on a beach where Dan tries to leave an answer message for Diane, but she phones him and expresses that she misses him and asks when he will be returning.

The Power of the Doctor[]

Following his near-death experience during an encounter with the CyberMasters, Dan felt unsafe travelling in the TARDIS and chose to remain in Liverpool. He later met with another former companion, Graham O'Brien, where they joined a support group for other people who had travelled with the Doctor, including Yaz, Ian Chesterton, Jo Grant, Tegan Jovanka, Melanie Bush, Ace and Kate Stewart.

Personality[]

Dan considered others' needs often before his own, volunteering at his local food bank and giving out treats for Halloween while he did not have food for himself at home. According to Wilma, whom he volunteered with, his continued refusal to take food home was a matter of pride. He could be a little bit careless. For example, Diane obviously expected him to be late for a date, calling him the "late Dan".

When faced with the unknown, Dan tended towards quick, rational conclusions, and had no trouble asserting his reality. Nonetheless, he remained open to new possibilities, and adapted quickly, even joking that he had a friend with a TARDIS which was even "bigger", moments into first encountering dimensional transcendentalism.

Liverpool was central to Dan's identity. He knew much about the city, and felt strongly about its rivalry with Leeds. He even distrusted Yasmin Khan, at least in jest, for her association with Sheffield, which was "too close to Leeds". He had a similar reaction, when he found out that he arrived in Manchester.

Skills[]

As part of the TARDIS crew, Dan knew how to operate the controls of the TARDIS control console, at least to some extent.

Trivia[]

  • The role of Dan was written specifically for John Bishop.[1] John Bishop considered his casting to "be a dream come true", as he would have never believed it when he was younger.[2]
  • As Dan is said to be an Aries, this would place the character's date of birth from 20 March to 21 April, if the Zodiac of the real world holds true in the Doctor Who universe.
  • After The Halloween Apocalypse first aired, "Evil Dan", an internet meme humorously depicting Dan as a nihilistic, gluttonous villain in fan-edited videos, rapidly became popular on YouTube and Twitter.[3] In the week following the broadcast of War of the Sontarans, Bishop retweeted one of the videos and said that he loved it.[4] In a heartwarming response to a fan letter he received, he told the fan he wrote to about finding Evil Dan funny, but wasn't sure about the explicit pictures he saw of Dan and Karvanista together, nor was Bishop's wife.[5] Two days after The Vanquishers aired, James Lee, a CGI artist for BBV Productions, posted an unofficial parody video on his YouTube channel using his Cyberon CGI models (as also used in Cyberon is Back!! and More Than Human...) under the title of Evil Dan vs Cyberon, which inserted "Evil Dan" into the climax of the original BBV Cyberon film.[6]
