Arondir is a major character in the Amazon Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He is an elf archer who seeks to defend the Southlands from Adar.

He is portrayed by Ismael Cruz CĂ³rdova

Biography[]

Before Beleriand was destroyed, Arondir was raised there, possibly close to the Mouths of Sirion. By the Second Age, he had taken up residence in the Southlands of Middle-earth, where the Silvan Elves kept watch over the locals to make sure they didn't become evil again like their forefathers had when they served Morgoth. Arondir stayed in the Southlands for 79 years, during which time he met and fell in love with Bronwyn, a resident of Tirharad, despite the fact that her son Theo had misgivings about the Elf.

Arondir chatted to Bronwyn for a moment before hurriedly escaping the bar of Tirharad after being approached by Rowan. With MĂ©dhor, he went back to Ostirith's watchtower. MĂ©dhor cautioned Arondir about dating humans, but Arondir rejected his worries. At that time, a messenger from High King Gil-galad arrived with the breaking news that the Southlands would no longer be under occupation. The Watchwarden Revion came to see Arondir, who was visibly upset, and advised him to take comfort in the idea of going home.

Just as a farmer brought his cow to Bronwyn for medical attention, Arondir returned to Bronwyn rather than departing with his fellow Elves. Alarmed, Arondir left to look into where the cow had been grazing after noticing that the animal's udders were emitting a vile, black liquid instead of milk. He was escorted by Bronwyn to Hordern. When they arrived at the settlement at dusk, they found it had been destroyed and looted, but there were no visible victims or survivors. The two found a tunnel opening in one of the homes, and Arondir went through to see inside. Arondir was forced to crawl a portion of the distance before being unexpectedly captured by Orcs. He was led to a huge trench, where he saw that the other Silvan Elves had also been imprisoned and forced to work. It was discovered that this quest was the enigmatic person Adar's search for a sword-hilt created by Morgoth.

Arondir and the other Elves eventually refused to remove a tree that was blocking the Orcs' excavation, and as a result, the supervisor Magrot killed MĂ©dhor. This sparked a rebellion that resulted in the deaths of Revion and many others after much violence, though Arondir mortally wounded Magrot. Arondir's execution was postponed so that he may be introduced to Adar. Before speaking to Arondir, Adar put a stop to Magrot's suffering and, while he didn't reveal his name, talked of his time in Beleriand before it was destroyed. Arondir was subsequently let free by Adar so that he might deliver his threat to destroy Tirharad if its inhabitants did not swear devotion.

Following the announcement, the man Waldreg persuaded almost half of Tirharad's former citizens to accept Adar's offer, leaving the other half in Ostirith's watchtower. Theo, who had discovered the dark sword-hilt a few weeks earlier, gave it to Arondir while he was still with them. Arondir dissuaded Bronwyn from giving Adar the hilt in hopes that he would spare them, coming up with a plan instead in which the surviving villagers fled and the watchtower was deliberately destroyed after Adar entered. Adar survived, but Arondir remained alone himself to carry out the mission. The locals withdrew back to the deserted Tirharad and got ready for Adar's troops to show up.

The villagers successfully repelled the initial assault with some ingenuity—Arondir himself narrowly escaped an attack from a massive Orc—only to discover the advance party to be the humans who had followed Waldreg. The villagers were then quickly defeated by Adar's main force, and after Adar threatened to kill Bronwyn, Theo handed over the sword's hilt to rescue his mother. Adar fled as a band of NmenĂ³reans led by MĂriel, Galadriel, and Halbrand arrived just then. While fighting the Orcs with the newcomers, Arondir paused to identify Adar to Galadriel.

He received what was thought to be the sword hilt that Galadriel had retrieved from Adar at a celebration held after Adar and his Orcs were vanquished. Theo thought that he had lost his significance after losing the sword-hilt, so Arondir attempted to encourag him. Arondir intended for Theo to be the one to dispose of the package, but Theo soon realized that this was a ploy because Adar had exchanged the hilt for a fake. Waldreg had grabbed Ostirith's true hilt in the interim and opened a dam, which directed water toward Orodruin and set it off. Arondir met up with Bronwyn and Theo at the NmenĂ³reans' camp after assisting the fallout survivors in getting there. Following their conversation, he got information about Brownyn's plans to lead the Southlanders to Pelargir through Galadriel and Bronwyn.
