~ Afro to Ninja Ninja and Takimoto after they ask him what his plans as God are at the end of the manga. |
Afro Samurai is the titular main protagonist of the anime and manga series with the same name. Afro has also appeared in a video game of the same name, with him also being the titular main protagonist.
He is an incredibly talented swordsman who saw his father get decapitated by Justice when he was a young kid and as a result, this traumatic experience has now made Afro’s mind flustered with revenge and later grew up to be a cold-blooded killer who’s willing to kill anyone in pursuit of getting the Number One Headband.
As the wielder of the Number Two Headband, Afro has encountered many bandits and other people that want the Number Two Headband, which has made him kill them in self-defense and in revenge for his ultimate goal of avenging his father.
He is voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, who also voiced Afro's thought-form sidekick Ninja Ninja, and portrayed both Mace Windu in the Star Wars franchise and Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Appearance[]
Afro's attire consists of the "Number Two" headband passed on to him in the series before he eventually wears the “Number One” headband in the end of the series after he kills Justice. He also wears a white shirt resembling a kimono shirt and dark brown baggy pants (in a style looking like a mix between 70's bell bottom pants and Japanese hakama pants.) In the video game they are more blueish and appear to be made from cotton jean material. He wears a pair of Japanese geta (a type of Japanese clogs or wooden sandals) that seem to be modified with some sort of rubber cushion on the bottom. He has a pair of golden (or similar material) bracelets and a pair of earrings. Beyond that he's rarely seen without his sword, passed on to him from his father. His sword, much like the rest of his outfit, is modified from a traditional Japanese design, featuring a large wooden board-like guard as well as a silver pendant on a long chord hanging from the pommel.
Personality[]
Afro is a very stern and serious person. He rarely ever smiles, despite being depicted smiling throughout his childhood and teen-age years. Afro is seen smiling and even laughing with his friends. However, as a result of the death of his father by Justice's hand, and the death of most of his friends and master, Afro became a silent and coldblooded killer. He has no qualms about killing anyone and everyone in his path, stating that his only aim is to "move forward." Afro often gets annoyed by Ninja Ninja who, unlike him, talks all of the time. This causes Afro to frequently tell him to "shut up" or "leave." Afro will even threaten Ninja Ninja if he annoys him enough. Despite Afro's personality which has him labelled a monster by the public, he is seen to have some form of kindness within him. This can be shown by his hesitance in fighting his old friend Jinno and keeping the comb that Otsuru gave him. He also deeply loves his father, who he refused to fight until the very end of Afro Samurai: Resurrection. Afro understands what it means to wear one of the headbands of power and lives his life for the sole purpose of finding his father's killer. His only companion and friend left alive is Ninja Ninja. In the manga, he's much more ruthless, even using a crippled young woman (whose younger brother he just killed) as a human shield. He also kills O-Sachi and a crowd of people that try to get revenge for her, before burning down her church.
History[]
Early Life[]
Not much is known about Afro’s childhood aside from the fact that he saw his father; Rokutaro, get challenged by Justice; who is the wielder of the Number 2 headband, when he was a young boy capable of walking. In the battle that followed, Afro saw his father get beheaded by Justice and his still living head being thrown to him as Justice takes the Number 1 Headband. Justice would then tell Afro that he was sorry that he had to see his father's death and that Afro would be filled with hatred for him. Justice then told Afro to challenge him when he was ready to duel a God before he started walking away cackling.
Afro would then take his father’s head and the Number 2 headband from Mt. Shumi and lived on the edge before getting ambushed by a group of bandits that easily overpowered him and took the Number 2 headband for themselves before they left young Afro to die. He was then found by Sword Master, Jinno and Otsuru, who then raised him in the Sword Master's dojo for orphaned children where he was trained as a swordsman.
During his time at the dojo, Afro has killed numerous lowlifes in an attempt to learn the location of the stolen Number 2 Headband before he eventually finds out that Sword Master; who raised him in his dojo where he was trained as a swordsman, was the holder of the Number 2 headband the whole time.

Plot[]
The former holder of the title "Number Two," Afro is out to hunt down Justice, the man who killed his father for the rank of "Number One." From the time he was a child, Afro honed his skills as a swordsman; his style typically consists of wielding his sword with only his right hand while his left continues to hold on to his sheath, although during his fight with Jinno, he held his sword with both hands to compensate for Jinno's dual wielding speed. He is a very quiet individual, likely because the life of the "Number Two" does not allow him to have any close relationships with anyone, so when approached by others he says very little, if anything. Although he seems cold, he is still haunted by his memories and past relationships; Justice later remarks that Afro, like his father, is still "soft inside." He also has a fondness for lemonade.
Abilities[]
- Master Swordsman - Afro is an exceptionally skilled swordsman, as he’s able to deflect crossbow bolts, shatter bullets with his katana’s blade, and even perform attacks that are very lethal. Afro is also able to use his subconscious mind to create extremely new combat techniques in the middle of battle, which was taught to him by Sword Master. Afro was even able to effectively fight in the air with the Afro Droid.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat - Afro is a skilled combatant, as he’s able to fight many opponents with his sword in one hand, but when facing stronger opponents, he uses two hands for a much more stronger attack. Occasionally, Afro would use his sandals to kick enemies to the ground.
- Enhanced Strength - Afro is fairly strong, as he’s able to cleanly slice through his enemies quickly and effortlessly, as well as piercing their throats with his sword’s sheath. Afro is also able to jump high and it is matched with his speed and agility. Afro has also shown enough strength to send a man twice his size flying to a wall behind him with a backhand punch.
- Enhanced Durability - Afro is fairly durable, as he has survived getting hit by an RPG missile, as well as a few punches from his cloned father in the end of the Resurrection movie before he eventually got back up and killed him.
- Enhanced Speed / Agility - Afro has shown exceptional speed and agility, as he was able to quickly slice an RPG missile in half and even shatter a bullet into molten shards. Afro is also fast enough to easily avoid the attacks of Jinno (Kuma) and the Afro Droid, as well as the bullets of Justice. Afro is even fast enough to counter a volley of crossbow bolts and is agile enough to perform a jumping front flip over the Afro Droid in their first fight.
Paraphernalia[]
Weapon(s)[]
- Katana - Afro’s signature weapon that was previously wielded by his father Rokutaro. It appears as a long bladed katana with a square gray guard, and a red colored hilt and sheath, as well as a string with a small cowrie shell at the pommel of the sword.
- Steel Comb - Afro uses his metal comb that was lended to him by Otsuru as an improvised weapon.
