Season 13[]

Episode 1[]

Main article: Episode 1301 - 18 Chefs Compete

On the bus ride to Hell's Kitchen, Sterling said that he has never been in that part of the woods and that the only woods he has been was Inglewood and the hood, much to the others' amusement. Then, the bus pulled over to Pacific’s Cinerama Theatre as Ramsay wanted to show them an inspirational video before going there. While watching the video, he said that his career could get kick-started at the end. After Ramsay revealed the prize of the season, he asked all the chefs to cook their signature dish.

During the Signature Dish Challenge, Sterling was the fifth person from the blue team to have his dish judged by Ramsay and went up against Roe. Before judging, Ramsay noticed that he looked very excited and asked if he was about to piss his pants. Then, he revealed that he was always 100%, before presenting his shrimp and grits, which he claimed made it with love. While Ramsay said that the shrimps were cooked perfectly, he scored three points out of five as the dish looked a mess. The blue team lost the challenge 23-24, and they were punished by setting up the dorms for both teams, and carrying the red team's luggage when they would come back from their reward.

During dinner service, Sterling served prawn scampi tableside. He was the only person from the blue team to serve food in the first 53 minutes due to his teammates' problems in the kitchen and was forced to serve incomplete tables. Despite believing that they could still pull through, the men were eventually kicked out of the kitchen. The blue team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people. Back in the dorms, he calmed down an argument between Bryant and JR

He was not nominated for elimination.[1]

Episode 2[]

Back in the dorms, Sterling’s tried to assist JR when the latter was studying the menu. He referred to two of the ingredients for lobster risotto as 'sofrico' (sofrito) and 'tomato shit', assumedly referring to a tomato confit, as he appeared to be having trouble pronouncing a word beginning with C. This annoyed Steve, who asked if he was dropped on his head a couple of times.

During the Geoduck Challenge, Sterling struggled to find a geoduck in the sandcastles during the first part, and at one point, Ramsay told him not to build one, and Santos said he was digging like a ten-pound dog. Eventually, he managed to find one in time. During the second part, he was paired with Santos and said that the blue team was pushing as they wanted to win. Out of their four attempts, only their second and fourth were accepted.

The blue team lost the challenge 14-15, and they were punished by cleaning all the sand outside the restaurant, prepping the remaining geoduck for the next service, and eating a boiled salt cod dish for lunch. During the punishment, he complained about the Los Angeles heat, and during lunch, he was the only one who ate without complaining. He revealed that he was determined not to let anything stop him from his dream while staying positive. Then, he decided to do a little dance to amuse his teammates, but JR wondered if he was on medication. While the blue team was impressed by him cleaning his plate quickly, Bryant was not, and asked if he had something to prove. That led to an argument between the two of them, with him asking Bryant if he wanted a hug, but Bryant rudely rejected it, and called him a damn fool. Their argument continued when the men were getting the geoduck cleaned as he asked for a zester, only for Bryant to rudely tell him to look in his knife kit.

During prep, Sterling apologized to Bryant for their argument, which the latter accepted, and both of them hugged. During dinner service, he was on the meat station with Fernando. Despite hoping to finally prove why he was deserving to be there, he said that he needed three more minutes on his meat, despite Steve saying that his halibut was ready. That led to an argument between the two of them, until Frank calmed the situation down. Then, he did not send the lamb as it was raw when he sliced it. Later, he sliced raw pork and struggled to slice the lamb as it was too small to cut. Both teams were named joint-losers, and they were asked to nominate two people each.

During deliberation, Sterling took the blame for the meat station's problems and nominated himself. However, Bryant pulled him aside, and told him not to take the full blame as Fernando was on the station as well, and he considered the latter.

Sterling was the blue team's first nominee for elimination, with Fernando being the second, and they joined Janai and Denine from the red team. During his plea, he said that he belonged here and knew that he could do better. He survived elimination.[2]

Episode 3[]

Back in the dorms, Sterling told the blue team that he was always 100, and called his nomination a good reality check. However, when Steve told him to shut the fuck up, that infuriated him, and he called him out for being disrespectful. Even though Steve threatened to beat him up, La Tasha broke up the argument, and told him to go upstairs. The next morning, he was called down by Ramsay, along with Denine from the red team. He was asked to take off his jacket and was given a new one for the next challenge.

During the Jacket Challenge, Sterling told Steve he was making a frittata, annoying the latter. He was the sixth person from the blue team to have his dish judged by Ramsay, and competed against Jennifer in the lettuce wrap round. He tied the round with Jennifer, and the blue team won the challenge 6-4. They were rewarded with a trip to the Venice Beach boardwalk, a zip line experience, and lunch on top of the Erwin Hotel. During lunch, he said that he did not feel like a loser.

The men returned from their reward and got changed, with Sterling stating that they were focused to do well, before leading a prayer to succeed. During dinner service, he was on the fish station with Bryant. Despite Bryant's concern about his performance, he managed to get his scallops accepted. Later, when Bryant was struggling on the halibut, Ramsay asked him to help the latter. However, he and Bryant were kicked out after the latter brought a raw halibut, and he was angry that he got kicked out for Bryant’s mistake, even though the latter apologized for it. Despite that, the blue team won the service.[3]

Episode 4[]

Main article: Episode 1304 - 15 Chefs Compete

Back in the dorms, Sterling gave Bryant a pep talk and urged him to ask for help if needed.

During the Brunch Service Challenge, he was on the baked eggs Florentine station with Bryant. At one point, he suggested to Bryant to add more salt to the spinach, but the latter ignored it as he tasted it fifteen times already. When the blue team was struggling on their first ticket, he refused to work like slobs, took the lead for the men by calling the next ticket, and Ramsay was happy to see somebody organizing. He jokingly mimicked himself leading an orchestra, and under his leadership, the men got back on track.

The blue team eventually lost the challenge, and they were punished by grinding chorizo sausages for the next service. During the punishment, Sterling said that the men had to find the rhythm to do well in challenges, but Santos was not in the mood for it.

During dinner service, Sterling was on the appetizer station with Steve. At one point, Steve served his risottos despite himself not having his beet salads ready, but managed to have them ready. Then, he tried to warn Steve that his risotto was soupy, but was ignored. After Frank and JR were kicked out, Ramsay relocated him to the meat station. The blue team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people.

He was not nominated for elimination.[4]

Episode 5[]

During the Protein Identification Challenge, Sterling was paired with Steve, and they participated in the second round. They landed on the calamari chowder and took six attempts to get their correct protein. During Aaron's turn, he instantly knew that the chili had alligator in it as he was from the dirty south, and despite trying to tell him, Aaron ignored him until his third attempt. The blue team eventually won the challenge 7:07-7:41, and they were rewarded with a trip to the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica. He was excited that a person from the ghetto was going to the beach house.

During prep, Sterling told the men that he wanted their good feeling to continue through service. During the Family Night dinner service, he was on the appetizer station. In the beginning, Ramsay told him to go to Fernando and Santos, who were managing the pizza station, to tell them to hurry up, which he did gently in front of the kids. After, Ramsay urged him to drive the appetizers, and he got vocal with Aaron. The blue team eventually won the service.[5]

Episode 6[]

Main article: Episode 1306 - 13 Chefs Compete

Back in the dorms, Sterling believed that the blue team had great momentum and that the women were rallying. The next morning, when he saw a barn pen with animals in it, he sang a parody of Old McDonald.

During the Farm Animal Challenge, Sterling sat out during the first part due to the blue team having an extra person. During the second part, Ramsay allowed him to pick any pair he wanted, and he picked the pork and grits. He was the last person from the blue team to have his dish judged and presented his grilled pork chop with a honey chipotle glaze. While the grits were praised for tasting good, it was criticized for lacking salt and refinement, and he scored 9 points out of 15.

The blue team won the challenge 28-25, and they were rewarded with a trip to the Santa Barbara wine country to sample wine and eat lunch. During lunch, Sterling admitted that if Roe’s dish was not poorly received, he would not have a friend that day.

During prep, Sterling told Steve that he loved him, but the latter rudely rejected it. That angered him, who not only told Steve to tell him if he had a problem with him but also while he talked a big game, he was not worth shit, though Steve called him shit in response. During dinner service, he was on the garnish station. At one point, he asked Santos for a time, but did not get any response. When Steve and Santos were kicked out, he was relocated to the fish station.

Both teams were named joint-losers, and they were asked to nominate two people each. Despite his decent performance, Sterling was considered as the first nominee because everybody felt he was not taking the competition seriously. However, he believed that they were haters, and considered Steve based on him getting kicked out, though Steve told him to go fuck himself and that he should go home.

Sterling was the blue team's first nominee, with Steve being the second, and they joined Katie and Roe from the red team. During his plea, he said he doesn't talk a good game without delivering, he angrily reminded Steve that his dishes were not sent back in the last few services compared to his own dishes, and that he fucked up a lot. He survived elimination.[6]

Episode 7[]

Main article: Episode 1307 - 12 Chefs Compete

After Katie's elimination, Ramsay asked Sterling to take off his jacket. However, while the blue team gave up on him, Ramsay did not yet. So, he was transferred to the red team, and he appreciatively hugged Ramsay, before greeting his new teammates. Back in the dorms, he told Roe how he worked with love, but she, Jennifer, and Ashley, who felt it would only get were from here were concerned that he was not taking the competition seriously enough due to his upbeat attitude.

During the Italian Cuisine Challenge, Sterling chose to compete against Bryant, as payback for throwing him under the bus, and their dish was Fettuccine Alfredo. During the cooking, he asked the women if they had everything ready, and ignored Ashley's warning that his dish was too spicy. He was the last person from the red team to have his dish judged, and he presented his fire-roasted pepper fettuccine. It was criticized for being more southern-based than Italian, being hotter than Ramsay expected, and he lost the round to Bryant.

The red team lost the challenge 2-3, with Sterling disappointed that he cost them the challenge, and they were punished by prepping for the next service, breaking down squid for a black ink tagliatelle dish, and making pasta from scratch. During the punishment, he decided to use this as an opportunity to bond with the women, and even asked Sous Chef Andi about her personal life, which the latter retorted that he was asking too many questions.

During prep, Sterling was given a rundown of where each station was in the red kitchen by La Tasha, but asked a lot of basic questions, which concerned Jennifer. During the Italian Night dinner service, he was on the garnish station. He was not seen much, but after the red team was kicked out, he said that he was not impressed by his teammates' performance, and called it ridiculous. Both teams were named joint-losers, and they were asked to nominate two people each.

He was not nominated for elimination.[7]

Episode 8[]

After Ashley's elimination, Sterling said goodbye to Sade, who was transferred to the blue team, and welcomed Frank as a new teammate.

The next day, when Sterling saw limousines pulling up, he thought it was President Obama, only to see dogs come out. During the Dog Show Planning Challenge, he wanted to add some love to his crab cakes, but could not remember how to make mayonnaise as he had not done it for a long time, until Jennifer gave him a reminder. He was the second person from the red team to have his dish judged and presented his panko breaded crab cakes with friche salad. It was praised for its texture, a great amount of crab and seasoning, and he won the round over Aaron.

The red team won the challenge 3-2, and they were rewarded with a trip to SeaWorld in San Diego, and eating at the Searsucker Restaurant. Sterling asked his former team how his technique was now, and at Searsucker, he felt that Brian Malarkey shared the same positive attitude as himself, before adding how good the food was.

During prep, Sterling told his teammates how much he loved them, but told Frank to stay focused. During the Dog Show dinner service, he was on the meat station. He got confused on orders until La Tasha calmed him down, and was stopped by her from sending his Wellingtons until Ramsay finished slicing his overcooked pork. Despite that, his refire was accepted. On their last order of entrées, he sent overcooked pork again but managed to bounce back. The red team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people.

Sterling was the red team's second nominee for elimination, with Frank being the first. During his plea, he said that he was stronger than Frank and that his personality showed it. He survived elimination, but after Ramsay announced that he would be raising the bar, he said that he might have to change his underwear because he thought he was getting eliminated.[8]

Episode 9[]

Main article: Episode 1309 - 11 Chefs Compete Part 2

While going back to the dorms, Sterling knew that he would not be eliminated.

During the Craps Challenge, Sterling rolled an L and chose lemons. His dish was not chosen to be judged, and the red team eventually won the challenge. They were rewarded with an overnight trip to Las Vegas, flew in a private jet, stayed in a mega-suite at the Planet Hollywood Hotel, and ate at Ramsay's BurGR. Before leaving, he told Ramsay that he loved him, and was excited to fly in a private jet to Las Vegas.

During dinner service, Sterling served steak Diane tableside. On appetizers, he was sending salads to the pass, which were accepted. Later, he accused Frank of drowning like hell after watching his poor performance. The red team lost the service, and were asked to nominate two people for elimination, which he knew it would be a hard thing to do as, while Frank was an obvious nominee, nobody else struggled. However, Ramsay changed his mind, and he said goodbye to Frank, who was eliminated on-the-spot.[9]

Episode 10[]

Main article: Episode 1310 - 9 Chefs Compete

Back in the dorms, Sterling said that they all tried to help Frank, but failed.

During the Indian Cuisine Challenge, Sterling wanted to get lentils and yogurt, but was only able to get the lentils as Roe could not give him the yogurts in time. During the cooking, he was denied by La Tasha when he tried to borrow her coconut milk and lamented that he got a shit hand for his dish. He was the second person from the red team to have his dish judged and went up against Sade in the chicken round. He presented his chicken curry soup, it was criticized for not being as fragrant as Sade’s dish, and he scored 3 points. The red team eventually won the challenge after a tiebreaker at 22, and they were rewarded with a spa day at Willow’s Spa and received a Vitamix blender. During the reward, he said that he was 100% twisted, and amused the women by flirting with the masseuse.

During dinner service, Sterling was on the appetizer station. After Sous Chef Andi suggested him to help Jennifer on the flatbread pizzas, he did so, and despite Jennifer's concerns, his efforts helped the red team to send food to the dining room. Later, his risotto was accepted, and he jokingly decided to make a music video remix in celebration. The red team won the service by a mile, and when Ramsay asked him if he wanted to go back to the blue team, he said that he did not.[10]

Episode 11[]

Main article: Episode 1311 - 8 Chefs Compete

During the Blind Taste Test, Sterling was the second person from the red team to compete and went up against Fernando. He scored 2 points by correctly guessing mascarpone cheese and peanuts, saving Roe from getting dunked. On Jennifer's turn, he got dunked twice. When a tie-breaker at 4 occurred, he wanted to be the red team's representative, but was ignored by La Tasha who wanted Roe instead. The red team eventually won the challenge, and they were rewarded with a day at the Santa Monica Pier, and lunch at The Lobster. During the reward, he loved both the view and the lunch and said that he was living ghetto fabulous.

During the Charity Night dinner service, Sterling was not seen doing much on Jennifer's course, until she told him to check on the potatoes and the rest of the course. He was in charge of the pan-seared salmon course, but Jennifer and La Tasha felt that he was too scattered brained to lead. Then, when Ramsay asked him to go to the dining room to describe his course, he accidentally spat food onto Ramsay’s cheek. Both teams were named joint-losers, and they were asked to nominate two people each.

Sterling was the red team's second nominee for elimination, with Roe being the first, and they joined Fernando and Santos from the blue team. During his plea, he said that he could lead by example and not yell at everybody. He survived elimination, and he said that despite being nominated numerous times, he felt that he only had to prove Ramsay what he had.[11]

Episode 12[]

Main article: Episode 1312 - 7 Chefs Compete

When Sterling found out that the next challenge was the Amuse Bouche Challenge, he admitted that he never heard of it until now. He did not have any idea what he was doing, but after visualizing his fiancé, he finally got an idea of a steak dish. Because the red team had an extra person, he decided to sit out as he was not confident in his dish, having a poor presentation, although he told Ramsay that it still tasted 100.

The red team lost the challenge 16-23, and they were punished by taking deliveries of coconuts and prepping them for the next service. During the punishment, Sterling noticed that there were a lot of coconuts, and complained about the amount of work they had to do. Later, he decided to use the coconut shells as fake breasts to amuse his teammates and said that he missed his fiancé. After the punishment, he called the medic after Jennifer was suffering from an allergic reaction.

During dinner service, Sterling was on the fish station. He counted down to himself on the scallops, as Roe suggested the previous night, and they were accepted. Then, he sent raw scallops, and despite promising not to let it happen again, his third attempt had one of the scallops raw. Ramsay asked if the red team had to change stations, but he was the only one against that idea. Then, Ramsay dragged the red team to the pantry room and ordered them to have a meeting. Jennifer accused him of pulling a Frank, which he argued against, and Roe warned him that if one more dish was rejected, they were switching stations. On his fourth attempt, the scallops were raw, Roe and he switched stations, and Ramsay urged him not to give up.

When both teams were lined up, Ramsay called Sterling forward and told him that while he was a phenomenal and relentless competitor, his poor performance on fish confirmed that he was not ready to be a head chef, therefore eliminating him on-the-spot. While the rest of the chefs were heartbroken by the news, he took it well, Ramsay praised him for being a joy around the kitchen and allowed him to keep his jacket as a reminder of what he achieved. Before leaving to the dorms to pack his bags, he hugged Ramsay and the chefs, and Ramsay told him he would always be 100. He received a retrospective montage of his run during his exit interview and ended by stating that while he did not win, he got Ramsay’s heart, which nobody else before him had. Instead of walking out the door, there was footage showing him casually walking out with his bags. However, he still received the burning picture sequence at the end of the episode.

Ramsay's comment: "Sterling went further in this competition than I thought he would. And even though he was always at 100, it wasn't enough to earn him a black jacket." [12]

Episode 16[]

Sterling was one of the eight chefs who returned for the final dinner service. He was Bryant's second pick, after Jennifer, and before Santos and Frank. He was surprised by that decision as he and Bryant did not get along when they were on the blue team together.

During dinner service, Sterling was on the garnish station. After Frank was switched to garnish due to slow performance on appetizers, he was relocated to the appetizer station. Because of him, the blue kitchen was able to send their appetizers as he wanted to step up for Bryant, with the latter calling him his rock. Later, while Frank was kicked out of the kitchen for his poor performance on garnish, Sterling was reassigned to the garnish station and helped the blue team complete dinner service. Bryant eventually lost the finals to La Tasha.[13]
