Yukine Hayakawa is the main antagonist of the 2024 Doga Kobo anime Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night. She is the abusive mother of Kano Yamanouchi aka Nonoka Tachibana.
She was voiced by Yūko Kaida.
What Makes Her A Hate Sink?[]
- Yukine is a low-functioning sociopath whose only concerned with achieving her goals that being she wants to have her idol group, the Sunflower Dolls, be so successful, that the Tokyo Dome would be completely packed with 50,000 people. To that end, she emotionally manipulates her daughter Kano and has her work alongside bandmates who grew to despise her because of nepotism. When the scandal incident happens, Yukine does zilch to try to remedy the situation instead asking Kano coldly if she was trying to come in the way of her goals.
- She is a completely terrible mother. While she lavishes Kano with praise for her singing abilities, Yukine remorselessly throws her out to the wolves when Kano punches one of her bandmates after she found out that they were the ones responsible for another idol group disbanding. Yukine not only felt little guilt over it, but not once in all her appearances does she refer to her daughter by her birth name. Rather, she dismissively acknowledges her by her stage name. Her eldest daughter Mion doesn't fare any better since she too appears to be distant from her mother possibly because she couldn't meet her high expectations. As such, Yukine is responsible for Kano's emotional distress and her fear of being abandoned by everyone she loved.
- When she discovers Mahiru Kozuki during one of JELEE's livestreams, she manipulates her into working on a commission for the Sunflower Dolls. It is strongly implied that she recruited her not because of her artistic talent but that it was her way of sabotaging her daughter after JELEE managed to obtain 100K followers through their hard work. Because Mahiru promised she would assist Kano and the others on a MV that they intended to release on New Year, Kano angrily lashes out at her for breaking her promise and practically causing the project to fall apart at the seams.
