“ When I die, you get yourself to the Joestar mansion along with this letter. The fool thinks he owes me. This is your ticket to greatness. It's your only chance, Dio. Go out there and take this useless world for all you can get. „
~ Dario Brando's last words to his son.

Dario Brando is one of two overarching antagonists (alongside Kars) of JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Phantom Blood.

He is the abusive father of Dio Brando, who also steals fortunes from the dead. Although a seemingly minor villain within the anime and manga series, the impact he left had a lasting mark on the overall story of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, which also led Dio to become an even more dangerous individual despite the frequent abuse from his own father.

He was voiced in Japanese by Tadashi Miyazawa and by Steve Kramer in the English dub.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • His introductory scene shows him gleefully robbing the crashed carriage of George Joestar, while showing zero sympathy for the horrific death of his wife.
  • He shamelessly pretends to have saved George's life in order to profit off of him. When George discovers this, he shows no remorse for this crime.
  • Despite all the compassion and pity George displayed towards him, Dario refuses to change his abusive and greedy behavior.
  • He was one of the worst father figures and husbands from the franchise while being the first one.
    • Despite not showing any of these acts onscreen, Dio mentioned that he made his wife suffer by working her to death.
    • He beat up his son for petty reasons, making him grow a secret hatred towards his father.
    • He forced him to sell his mother's dress in order to buy him some booze.
      • Dio, despite being no better, was enraged by his father's nasty act and angrily told him to go to hell (this was omitted in the anime).
    • All of this ultimately resulted in Dio giving him his well-deserved death by poisoning, making him quite possibly Dio's only victim to not be played for any sympathy.
  • He can be generally considered to be a major influence on Dio's cruel and psychopathic personality coupled with the impoverished government the latter grew up.
  • He's overall easily the most despicable character in Phantom Blood, as both his Pure Evil son and even most of his minions have their own evil is cool/creepily awesome factors, while he is nothing more than a loathsome thug and abuser.
