Write in 2014 discussion

Ok, I have employed a list idea from another writer in this group:
(WAD stands for Words A Day)

January: 300 WAD(still burnt out from NaNo)
February-March: 500 WAD
April: 10 pages of screenplay a day(ScriptFrenzy)
May-July: 300 WAD(ScriptFrenzy burnout & Vacations)
August-October: 500 WAD
November: 1,667 WAD(NaNoWriMo)
December: 100 WAD(NaNo burnout & Holidays)

Then I have some specific goals:
*Finish Portland and Edit, then work on submitting to publishers.
*Submit stuff for publishing. (Short story, poem, article)
*Finish several novels that I have started, but not finished.
*Finish my comedy screenplay.
*Write a screenplay during ScriptFrenzy.
*Write a novel during NaNoWriMo.
*Be regular on my blog and attain more followers.
*Read 5-10 books a month, and post reviews.

Wow, what a list.

Wow Paige, great goals and well-considered pacing. It's true that some months offer more writing time than others. I wrote my 5,000 word short story, 'Elder Cares', in September and put it through 2 edits with daughters' help before I sent it to Carlos to be considered for the 'Ménage-à-20' anthology. In October there were so many family events that there's no way I could have written an entire story in that month.

Best of luck to you with your goals. I see that you also have a darling child. In my 'daily' life, I teach young children to read, so if you have any questions about that (how to or etc.) don't hesitate to ask.

Jeanne - I am really enjoying the Menage-A-20 stories. What a fun idea Carlos put together. I just may partake in your 'teaching children to read' advice. When is it a good time to start. My son just turned 3, and we are working on States and Continents, some foreign languages, and counting. I'd definitely love for him to be able to read before he starts school. :)

A word about goals in general:

In theory, they must be specific and under your control..

So saying 'Get something published' is not really a goal. You can't decide whether a magazine or publisher is going to want what you offer. It's not in your power to succeed or fail at this.

Not getting at you, Paige, I've seen similar goals elsewhere in this group.

You could say 'Submit xx things for publication.' That is a goal you can succeed at. Great if someone accepts, but who cares? You're already working on the next thing.

The process: write, edit, get critiques, rewrite, edit, proofread, submit.

On to the next!

Ditto the blog. All you can do is post regularly and make it as entertaining or useful as you can. People will follow or they won't. Of course, if you are regular and entertaining, they will follow in greater and greater numbers...

Hi Paul. I totally agree on what you said about getting something published. I wasn't very detailed with that aspect because it will all depend on me, what I submit. Then, what others think of it and if they feel it is something they would want to put in their publication. Basically, that goal means that I need to push myself to actually try to submit things for publication, you have to take that step first in order to even think that something will be published. LOL

I have noticed that since I am blogging more often now, that I have had more followers sign up, so that goal is basically to stay regular on my blog. I have so much fun doing it that, it really doesn't matter how many followers I get, I just would like to see people interested in what I have to say or share. Hehe!

Oh, and goals to me have always been 'I'll get around to it if I can.' They have never ruled my life or been specific. I mean, some of my goals for my life are things that I know are ridiculous, but just fun to think about. I'm sorry, I'm quite a rebel and enjoy anything untraditional... :)

Before you teach your son to read, it's a good idea to advance his listening level so that he is language advanced. If he mainly likes picture books, that is normal and great, and you can also add some new things. Does he listen and understand when you read 'folk tales', eg; The Three Bears, Three Little Pigs, The Ugly Duckling? (The Ugly Duckling has more difficult sentence structure than the other two I mentioned).
Will he listen to Peter Rabbit and other Beatrix Potter books? The language is rich. How about the A.A. Milne 'Winnie-the-Pooh' stories (the originals, not the Disney versions).

Does he have an alphabet poster or frieze where he can see it from his bed? Sometimes people tell me that their child has plastic letters in their little desk. Fine, but that isn't enough for early reading. If there is an alphabet poster or frieze where he can see it from his bed, you can talk about some of the letters (with enthusiasm) when you're in his room.
Then, when you're not in his room, he will see it when he wakes up, or when he is supposed to be napping, but is actually awake.
When people bring their kids to me for reading lessons, I ask if the child can recognize all of the letters, upper and lower case. Or at least most of them. I only see the child once or twice per week so the parents need to teach the alphabet at home.
Dr. Seuss ABC book is good too. The first time through, the kids might want to hear/see only a few pages. That's fine. The next time through, you begin again at the beginning. This time the first few pages are a bit more interesting just because they are familiar. So you will probably get a little farther each time. Or most times anyway.

Does this give you any ideas? If you have already done all of these things, let me know and I'll tell you the next steps.

I've been reading the Dr. Suess ABC book to my son since he was barely able to look at the pages. He has an extensive library already(He has a full bookshelf in his room, and the hall cupboards are becoming overfilled with books), my mother brought me all of my books from when I was a kid and we continue to purchase more all the time. He loves to sneak off into his room and look at his books, he thinks he is reading them, because he makes up the story according to the pictures or what has been read to him. He tends to choose the books with the most colorful pictures or his favorites like dinosaurs, Dr. Suess, Alexander by Judith Viorst, Little Quack, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Shel Silverstien. We have updated versions of the classic folk tales, but they are told with different vocabulary and sentence structure.

He has always been a great listener and I have read bedtime stories to him since he was about 5 months old. He also will bring books to me periodically thoughout the day and ask me to read them. I know he understands everything that I am reading to him because we have a discussion about it when we are done. He loves going to the library, it's his favorite place to go. He always wants to check out Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, he goes to it everytime we go.

My mom brought him an alphabet poster that we hung up on his wall a month ago, he knows all the pictures that are associated with the letters, but he doesn't quite understand that they are on there for that reason. We have an alphabet game that we play with him from time to time and he seems to understand most of the vowels, but he also picked up H, P, D, M, Z, X, B, and S in upper-case and lower-case. The others are in the process. He has another ABC book that we use to work with him, but that's just another picture association book. He knows all of the pictures, but not the letters. I have a letters kit that I got around the holidays but I have yet to bring that out.

I have always corrected him with his speech if he said something like, "Them are soft" I would say, "no, it's they are soft." Emphasizing they. That has helped a lot and now, he sounds older than he is, at least to my family. He tells me that I am 'beautiful' sometimes, but also throws in that I am 'impossible'. Last week, he told me that the mean character on a show he was watching was 'terrifying.' I try to teach him new words everyday.

It is so fun to see him learn! I love it!
I guess you could say I have extremely high hopes for him and his life, but I do understand that he will be what he wants to be, but I'd like to jump start his ambition and love of learning early.

The pictures of the moon were gorgeous paige! You should've been down here in Bama it was CLOUDLESS, I swear I was so glaad my puppy woke up 3x that night because as she did her business I just looked at the moon :D so pretty

I wish I could've taken the pictures as soon as I got home, but I had to wait for the new battery charge for that camera. When I got home, it was several strands of clouds and you couldn't see the moon,but it's brightness was streaming through the clouds. It was amazing.
You should've taken some pictures of your moon to share.

My Camera was way inside the house and our front door is LOUD so if I ran in and out to get a camera...my parents would've killed me lol :P

I do like hte idea of posting pics on my blog though. i live out in the country on a ton of acres of land so we have a lot of wilderness around us. I'll have to take some pics on a pretty day and post them for everyone :D

YAY! I'd so love to see what Alabama looks like. Posting pictures on the blog is fuuuuuun. I like to share my life with people too. It's gets a bit more personal than just the basics.

Alabama is gorgeous, believe it or not! I didn't think it would be when I moved here last August but the songs and alabamians aren't lying when they say "Alabama The Beautiful".

I think I'll do that tomorrow. Its supposed to be sunning but slightly chilly so I'll throw on a sweat suit and go for a run through the woods but I'll bring my camera to take some pics :D
