“ | I'm going to get 24th century on his ass. | ” |
–URL, Space Pilot 3000 |
URL (pronounced “Earl”) is a robotic police officer for the New New York Police Department. Together with his former partner and friend Smitty, URL is often seen assaulting suspects at the slightest provocation, though for a peace officer, being out of control is part of the job. The pair are sometimes featured on the television show "Cop Department", but they are generally camera crew free. He also was partner to Officer Fry for a short amount of time in the episode Law and Oracle. He also has a relationship with the Police Chief O'Manahan.
Armament[]
Besides the usual police equipment of handcuffs and an Energy Baton, URL sometimes carries heavier firepower in the form of a laser rifle. URL also has a loudhailer that can be extended from his mouth and a flashing light that is attached to his head.
Behind the Scenes[]
His style of speech is reminiscent of those in 1970s blaxploitation films, with phrases like "aww yeah" and "all right".
URL's name is an acronym for the term Uniform Resource Locator.
The earlier appearances show URL as bipedal, complete with foot clomping sounds. However, URL is known to have a penchant for body modification, having accepted a "giant robot head" in return for not arresting the guy running a robot chop shop.
In later appearances, URL must have had another custom mod, because he's shown rolling monopedally, on a conventional robot base. Doesn't seem to have affected his job though.
For the 2023 revival of the show, URL is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson instead of John DiMaggio who voiced him from the series' first episode to his last appearance before the 2013 finale. This recast is one of many that have been done due to the 2020 George Floyd protests, where white actors were replaced by people of color. URL may not have been explicitly black, but it is implied by his dialogue. Barbados Slim, Leo Wong, and Scoop Chang have also been recasted with actors whose race matches their actors, as did characters like Carl Carlson and Julius Hibbert on The Simpsons and Cleveland Brown on Family Guy.
