Tanystropheus (pronounced: /tɑːnɪsˈtrfiʌstan-is-TRO-fee-us[4]) was a species of dinosaur.[1]

Description[]

Tanystropheus had a long, serpentine body with four thin legs. Most of their body was composed of its neck. It had a small head and long jaws filled with sharp teeth.[1]

Combat[]

Tanystropheus were ambush predators. They hid just under the water, waiting for prey. Then launched themselves from the water and grabbed onto their target, dragging it back under. It was strong enough to drag prey that weighed up to 500 lb (230 kg).[1]

Abilities[]

Tanystropheus were excellent swimmers due to their webbed rear feet.[1]

Ecology[]

Tanystropheus were carnivorous and solitary creatures.[1]

Habitats[]

Tanystropheus were most often encountered in rivers and swamps.[1] On the continent of Kara-Tur, they could be found on the Malatran Plateau in the Riving of Laughing Idols.[5]

Notes[]

  1. The 2nd edition alignment given in the original source is "Nil", which should be read as Neutral according to this Sage Advice answer by Skip Williams in Dragon Magazine Issue #155: "The nil alignment rating is a holdover from an early draft of the Monstrous Compendium material. Originally, a rating of nil indicated that a creature was not intelligent enough to have an alignment at all. However, the nil rating was dropped during rewriting and should have been replaced with the neutral alignment."
