I went and looked back at my pdf of the 3rd edition Fiend Folio after having looked over Lhynard's recent edit of this.
I saw that all the creature templates seem to have some kind of example creature given and the one for Swordwraith is listed later in the book under "Monsters Ranked by Challenge Ranking."
So in that case, shouldn't the creature be listed here with the challenge rating that is presented in the book?
- No, that's not how we do it. Yes, they all have examples—some have more than one—but the example is purely an example. In the case of the swordwraith, the example was a 5th-level human fighter, but for most standard, non-templated creatures, we get examples without character levels. To be consistent, should we not be using a 1st-level fighter, instead? A swordwraith can come from the death of any humanoid or monstrous humanoid fighter, which means that they can have all manner of sizes, subtypes, vision, movement modes, CRs—basically, most of the things that we track in the infobox. They always, however, have the undead type, darkvision, and usually lawful evil alignment. Only things true about all swordwraiths should be listed. ~ Lhynard (talk) 18:50, April 20, 2020 (UTC)
- Consider also how all monsters in 3e are given advancement rules on how to make more powerful versions. Many also have additional examples at higher advancement given, such as a "truly horrid" umber hulk. These don't get articles, because they are not subspecies; they are examples of powerful (unnamed) individuals from the given race. We seek to document the lore of the races, not every possible individual set of stats for each monster. That would be insane. ~ Lhynard (talk) 18:55, April 20, 2020 (UTC)
