Gladiators aspire to become masters of the sword, the most ubiquitous weapon in all of Eorzea. The sword is a deceptively simple weapon, which is why many take it up to achieve their goals. Wealth, power, love—all seem within reach when duly armed. A gladiator, however, understands that to live by the sword is not a decision to be taken lightly. To walk upon the bloodsands is to court death, and we must ever be prepared to enter Thal's realm. But when you stand triumphant in the Coliseum and hear the crowd chanting your name, you feel...immortal. Of course, victory goes only to those willing to work for it. A gladiator must rigorously train not only to deliver fierce attacks, but also to weather them. Indeed, learning the shield is just as important as learning the sword. These defensive skills are especially important when fighting alongside allies. In battle, a gladiator is often relied upon to draw the enemy's attention while his weaker allies seize the opportunity to attack. It is for this reason that gladiators are often considered indispensable in battle, for none are more skilled in the arts of war than we.
The Paladin is a Job in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced as the Discipline of War Gladiator in the original release, with a guild situated in the Coliseum in Ul'dah. Players start as a Gladiator, and then may upgrade to Paladin using the Soul Crystal obtained from the quest Paladin's Pledge after Gladiator reaches level 30.
Profile[]
Gladiator[]
Gladiators specialize in the handling of all manner of one-handed blades, from daggers to longswords, be they single- or double-edged, straight or curved. Tracing their roots to the Coliseum, where the roar of the crowd reigns supreme, these melee combatants have learned to seamlessly flow between attack and defense in a dance that delights the eye.
Making use of their skill with the shield, gladiators can also draw the attention and attacks of an enemy upon themselves, thereby protecting their comrades from harm.Official site
Gladiators wield swords and are the only Discipline of War capable of equipping shields. The Gladiator's primary role is to tank, focusing on shielding their allies from enemy ire by drawing their attacks on themselves.
The Gladiator's skillset contains many abilities that increase enmity from enemies, as well as abilities that increase their defense. Gladiators tend to have the highest defense of all roles while being able to equip shields, allowing them to block incoming damage. This is offset with having one of the lowest damage per second ratios of any tanks.
Paladin[]
For centuries, the elite of the Sultansworn have served as personal bodyguards to the royal family of Ul'dah. Known as paladins, these men and women marry exquisite swordplay with stalwart shield work to create a style of combat uncompromising in its defense. Clad in brilliant silver armor, they charge fearlessly into battle, ever ready to lay down their lives for their liege.
To be a paladin is to protect, and those who choose to walk this path will become the iron foundation upon which the party's defense is built.Lodestone
Paladins further increase the defensive capabilities of their base class. They also make use of healing and barrier spells, either for themselves or their allies. Paladins, alongside Dark Knights, are the only Disciple of War jobs to utilize MP in their skillset. For Paladins, they have a magical attack phase by using the skill Requiescat, building MP in their physical phase otherwise.
Story[]
History[]
In the year 969 of the Sixth Astral Era, a dispute surrounding the succession of twin princes erupted into an internecine war-a conflict which ultimately fractured the Thanalan city-state of Belah'dia into the rival nations of Ul'dah and Sil'dih. Upon this bitter division, Ul'dah's first ruler, Sasagan UI Sisigan, gathered to him those knights who had sworn him realty, and established a retinue of bodyguards thenceforth known as the Sultansworn.
For six hundred years now, generations of Sultansworn have taken the oath of their forebears, and honed their martial prowess in service to the royal house of Ul'dah. Centuries of training and tradition have led to the development of an indomitable style of combat that has many times proven instrumental in the salvation of the desert nation and its people. Yet beloved as they are as the shield of the sultanate, the Sultansworn have lost their former luster-both their morale and their numbers dwindling apace with the royal family's eroded authority. Thus it is that Captain Jenlyns, in an effort to preserve the teachings of his failing order, has begun training worthy adventurers in the arts of the paladin.

After that, Aldis gives up his Samurai garb and returned to the guild as a Gladiator once more. But, he still let Mylla to continue as the guildmaster.
Equipment[]
Gladiators and paladins predominantly wield one-handed swords in conjunction with a shield in the offhand. They are the only discipline that can use shields (or rather, any offhand weapon) after level 50, giving them exclusive access to the ability to block attacks. Their armor is primarily made up of "Fending" gear that they share with other tanking disciplines, boasting the highest defenses among all armor pieces. At lower levels they also have access to the lighter armor used by DPS disciplines. While the items' bonus attributes may be of use, it is important to weigh their benefits against the defenses lost.
The primary attributes for gladiators and paladins are strength and vitality, which boost their attack power and HP respectively, and should be prioritized over other attributes. They have access to the tank-exclusive tenacity attribute, which boosts their damage done and healing received, while also lowering damage taken.

The Oath Gauge displays an icon that changes color depending on whether the Paladin is in enmity stance, which is activated by using the skill Iron Will. The gauge also displays the strength of Oath, which will increase using auto-attacks. Several defensive actions such as Sheltron and Cover require a quantity of Oath before they can be used. In Endwalker, the Oath Gauge is set to always full when the battle starts.
In PvP, Oath is used to activate Cover and the gauge will gradually deplete when Cover is in effect. Using combo actions will refill the Oath Gauge.

Behind the scenes[]
After patch 1.20, Gladiators received many of the abilities from the scrapped Sentinel discipline, and lost a bit of attack power in exchange for better defense and tanking abilities. Gladiator animations are used by any Disciple of the Hand or Land that enters combat with their tools. This includes the class/job-specific Victory Pose (/vpose) and Battle Stance (/bstance) emotes. Gladiator and Paladin's battle stance is similar to Tidus's from Final Fantasy X.
Gladiator upgrading into Paladin is a change for the western localization; in Japan, the class is Knight, and the adventurer's status as a knight unsworn to the Ul'dahn Sultana fits the general description of a knight-errant.
Gladiators originally learned the Shield Swipe weaponskill upon completing the quest The Rematch. In the quest Aldis mentions he had defeated Leavold in their last coliseum bout using the technique and teaches it to the player. Shield Swipe was removed with the job reworks introduced in Shadowbringers, and the quest was altered to no longer mention Shield Swipe.

Etymology[]
gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers but most were slaves schooled under harsh conditions. Gladiators were celebrated in art, and it became a feature of politics and social life in the Roman world.
Apaladins, sometimes known as the Twelve Peers, were the foremost warriors of Charlemagne's court, according to the literary cycle known as the Matter of France.
