Fira from FFXIII

Fira in Final Fantasy XIII.

Fira (ファイラ, Faira?), also known as Fire2, Fire 2, or Fire II, is the level two Fire-elemental spell in the Final Fantasy series.

Since its appearance at the start of the series, Fira has appeared in almost every title as a spell. It is generally the first "ra" tier spell players gain access to. In titles featuring jobs, the Black Mage, Red Mage, and Magus can utilize Fira.

Overview[]

Black magick that envelops targets in ferocious flames.

Description
Fira from FFVII Remake

Aerith using Fira in Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Fira is the first upgraded form of the default Fire Black Magic, appearing since the first Final Fantasy. It is often the first spell upgrades players gain access to, becoming available during the later portions of a title's first act.

Fira deals a moderate amount of fire-elemental damage to targets, often unleashing a storm of flames on enemies. Fira had the ability to be group-casted on multiple targets in earlier titles, but would later become an area of effect upgrade starting from Final Fantasy XII. Undead and plants are usually weak to Fira throughout the series.

Fira is sometimes used to enhance character physical attacks in some fashion, with the common method of enchantment being the Fira Spellblade attack.

Several titles have featured unique or alternate upgraded forms of Fira. These spells include unique properties, or are used by specific jobs:

  • Multi-Fira (連続魔法 ファイラ, Renzoku Mahou Faira?, lit. Continuous Magic Fira) - A unique form of Fira used by Seymour Guado from Final Fantasy X. It casts the spell on multiple targets in succession.
  • Fira II (ファイラ II, Faira II?) - An upgraded form of Fira that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy XI as a Geomancer Black Magic. Due to the -ra and -ga tiers in the title being used exclusively for area-of-effect versions, the upgraded version uses Roman numerals to signify its enhanced rank. It deals fire damage to multiple foes within an area of effect around the caster.
  • High Fire II (ハイファイラ, Hai Faira?, lit. High Fira) - An upgrade of Fira that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy XIV as a late-game Black Mage spell. It deals fire damage to multiple foes in an area of effect.
  • Dark Fira/Dark Fire II (ダークファイラ, Dāku Faira?) - An "evil" variant of Fira that appears in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XIV. It often deals fire-elemental damage to a target, occasionally inflicting several status ailments.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth[]

Fira from FFVII Rebirth

Fira is the second tier spell from the Fire Materia. It deals medium magical fire damage to a target. If the character casting the spell has unlocked their fire-elemental weapon ability (e.g. Wildfire for Red XIII), Fira becomes Fira α, which is not more powerful than normal a Fira spell, but will bestow a fire-elemental sphere to the spellcaster for the rest of the battle (unless the player changes the element with Blizzard α etc.) that will circle their character model and will supplement small magical fire-elemental damage when defending against certain enemy attacks (perfect-blocking not needed) and when using ATB abilities. It is not the same effect as imbuing a character's weapon with elements via Elemental Materia, however. The attacks from the "fire sphere" do build stagger and can be critical hits.

Fira is also used against the player by the following enemies: Basilisk, Hecteyes, Necrotic Entity, Scrutineye, Specimen H1024, Twin Brain, and Two Face.

Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-[]

Fira was a ranged elemental Magic Materia. It could be generated by selecting the Materia Generation feature at HQ and taking a light red picture. The materia could not be purchased in RP Exchange and GS.

BD Fira
Fira from BDII

Fira in Bravely Default and Bravely Default II.

Fira has appeared in other Square Enix titles as an ability, referencing the Final Fantasy version of the spell.

Fira, together with Fire and Firaga, appears as a recurring magic command in the Kingdom Hearts series. When performing the spell in most titles, the caster unleashes a homing fireball directly from their Keyblade to damage a target. In Kingdom Hearts II, Fira instead cloaks the user with a wall of flames. An alternate version known as Homing Fira (ホーミングファイラ, Hōmingu Faira?, lit. Homing Fira) appears in the original Game Boy Advance version of Chain of Memories, which unleashes a version of the spell that seeks out the targeted enemy.

The Japanese-exclusive 3D remake of SaGa 3 (known as Final Fantasy Legend III in the west) features Fira, serving as one of the many fire-elemental magics in the title.

Fira is featured as a recurring Black Magic spell in the Bravely series, serving as an intermediate spell for the Black Mage job in each title. The spell can also be used by Red Mages in titles associated with the first Bravely Default.

Names in other languages[]

Fira is called Piro+ (Old Greek for Fire+) in Spanish, Ingnira (from the Latin Ignis, "fire", and the suffix -ra) in Italian, Feura (first syllable of German word 'Feuer' and the suffix -ra) in German, Brasier+ (Fire+) in French, and Огонь-2 (ogon-dva) in Russian.
