Akademeia is the capital of the Dominion of Rubrum in Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy Agito. It is the place of the Vermilion Peristylium that houses the Vermilion Bird Crystal and primarily serves as an academy for training Agito Cadets. It is located on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge and serves as the home base for Class Zero, the Consortium of Eight, and the Dominion's leader, Chancellor Khalia Chival VI.
Rubicus[]
- Gel. XIII, 1 RG The Vermilion Dawn
The oldest exact verse of scripture in Akademeia is perhaps the most open to interpretation: "Unto Orience came the Crystal of the Vermilion Bird, to guide the children of Rubrum and bestow the great task upon them." The "great task" referred to herein is commonly understood to mean the creation of Agito, and it is to that end that Akademeia was established.
The grand halls we know now were initially naught but a single schoolhouse, a quiet sanctuary where a few cadets might bask in the light of the Crystal as they sought enlightenment. Yet as the teachings of the first chancellor spread, so did the size of that humble schoolhouse.
By the year 100, the use of magic had become so prevalent that Akademeia was now responsible for both research and enrichment. Attack spells, which fell monsters and destroy obstacles, as well as defense spells, which heal the wounded, would be analyzed and reformulated day and night. This could then be taught to individuals enrolled as Agito Cadets who sought to actualize their full magic potential, thereby forming the basis of the Akademeia we have come to know. How a simple, cryptic verse could alter the course of so many lives is indeed nothing short of remarkable.
- Aqu. XII The Structure of Akademeia
Established to bring the legendary savior Agito into the world, Akademeia was organized into an educational facility for potential candidates known as Agito Cadets. The students were divided into thirteen core units, known as "classes," from the newly formed Class Zero on to Class Twelfth. In addition, Akademeia housed a reserve class of trainees, students who had not fulfilled the requirements to be promoted to cadet. The Sorcery, Scholastics and Logistics Divisions, along with Administration and Armory, were formed to train, support, and educate the student body.
The dominion legions originally existed for the purpose of these fledgling cadets, but with Orience constantly at war, the military branch of Akademeia tended to have considerable influence in administrative matters. Mobilization, arms production and deployment of soldiers were crucial components of the country's infrastructure—and with all those aspects under his command, the commandant enjoyed more authority than the Chancellor of Akademeia in regard to national administration.
This political structure coincided with both the Akademeia administration's desire to devote themselves to cultivating Agito, and Central Command's wish to manage the military without interference. As long as the war did not escalate, the country ran smoothly. The war did escalate, however, and Akademeia was drawn into the fray. With the cadets now assigned to its charge, the military's authority increased even further, and the balance of power was reversed as Akademeia was slowly subsumed as a part of the dominion legions.
Story[]
Final Fantasy Agito[]
Final Fantasy Type-0[]
Akademeia precedes the formation of Dominion of Rubrum. The school was formed around the Vermilion Peristylium to train cadets to become Agito, the fabled savior of Orience, as per the wish of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, but the academy grew over time. When monsters attacked Akademeia and the onslaught was only quelled by the Vermilion Bird l'Cie, the previously loosely affiliated states of Rubrum, Togoreth, Iscah and Eibon unified to form the Dominion of Rubrum with Akademeia as its seat of power to protect the Crystal.
The Vermilion Bird Crystal blessed its citizens with the ability to use magic, the gift passed down by Agito Cadets and cadets-turned-instructors propagating the Will of the Crystal. Once the four Crystal-States had been established, the dominion government followed the example set by the other nations to promote and oversee the blessings of their Crystal, as the denizens of Orience now needed to fear each other as Rubrum had learned from the war with the Kingdom of Dracobaltia. When news of the Lorican-Militesi War reached Rubrum, the dominion government decided to strengthen its magic faculties to prepare against a potential assault, and Akademeia's Sorcery Division was founded in 297 as an instance responsible for all magic matters.
In 842 Akademeia is attacked by the Militesi Empire after they break the Pax Codex by deploying a l'Cie and initiate a war, and the dominion recalls all legionaries to defend the capital leaving the rest of the dominion defenseless. The empire disables the Vermilion Bird Crystal via their crystal jammer and thus nullifies Akademeia's magic barrier. Cadets who would later be known as Class Zero are deployed to take it down. Ace requests a dominion legionary named Izana Kunagiri be deployed to deliver his team a COMM, but Izana and his chocobo Chichiri fall in battle. Ace finds the duo before they perish but it is too late to save Izana, so Ace only takes Izana's Knowing Tag and the COMM. His memories of Izana are removed by the Vermilion Bird Crystal.
With aid from their informants via the communicator, Ace and his fellow cadets infiltrate the Militesi flagship that had docked on the Akademeia Airship Landing and disable the first crystal jammer. Machina Kunagiri and Rem Tokimiya, Agito Cadets of other classes of Akademeia, face off against Qun'mi Tru'e, the White Tiger Secundus l'Cie, at the Arena, but the crystal jammer in her magitek armor, the Dáinsleif, renders the two powerless. Ace and his friends arrive to help, and to Qun'mi's surprise summon the Eidolon Odin. Qun'mi is defeated and teleports to safety as her magitek armor and the crystal jammer within explode. As the power of the Vermilion Bird Crystal returns, Rubrum forces drive the imperials out of Akademeia as the Militesi General Qator Bashtar receives word a Vermilion Bird l'Cie is on the move and issues a withdrawal order.
Since the foundation of Akademeia, cadets and trainees alike had only participated in drills and other wartime activities as part of their training to become Agito, a legendary savior said to appear during Tempus Finis, the end of the world. They had never engaged in combat for the purpose of achieving military goals, or at least not in an official capacity. The commandant, Suzuhisa Higato, places the cadets under military command with the chancellor declaring the dominion—and, by association, the peristylium—to be in a state of emergency. With the Consortium of Eight's approval, the cadets are organized into military units.
The cadets who could withstand the crystal jammer are a special group tutored by Archsorceress Arecia Al-Rashia, one of the most influential people in Orience. Impressed by their prowess, the administration enrolls them to the academy under the name Class Zero to start deploying them on missions to retake the territories lost to Milites. As Ace is heading to the Class Zero homeroom he runs into Arecia who tells him the class is to get two new recruits, Machina and Rem, but as they are different from the other members, she warns him of telling the two of the true nature of phantoma, the mystical life energy of all living beings the class harvests from felled foes that allows them to use magic independent of the Vermilion Bird Crystal. The Sorcery Division of Akademeia researches magic and phantoma but knowledge of this substance is classified.
Machina learns his brother died in the capital liberation and investigates why he was deployed, but the records are confidential. After Class Zero helps Rubrum retake the Rubrum Region from the empire, Ace overhears Arecia arguing with the commandant over Izana's deployment and how Ace had asked for him, but is unable to tell of this to Machina. The cadets are deployed to help reclaim Togoreth Stronghold and to secure classified documents on phantoma research in a top secret Code Crimson mission, but the entire area is obliterated when the White Tiger l'Cie Primus Nimbus appears and the Vermilion Bird Crystal deploys its own Primus l'Cie, Zhuyu Voghfau Byot, to intercept him. Though given a withdrawal order, many cadets perish.
With Togoreth lost Rubrum sets out to reclaim Iscah and to sabotage the empire's magitek armor research in the Steelworks facility near their capital of Ingram. A ceasefire is called when Queen Andoria of the Kingdom of Concordia invokes the Fabula Pact, but it is shortlived as she is assassinated and her successor, the King of Concordia, allies with the empire for the dominion's supposed betrayal, as the regicide is pinned on Class Zero. Akademeia is in turmoil as wild rumors circulate of the Class Zero cadets and the consortium doesn't publicly defend them, as a rift has widened between its members: the cadetmaster, the provost and the commandant scheme to usurp Arecia, the consortium's most influential member. Thus, her adoptive children, Class Zero, also lose favor. The commandant plans to send Class Zero's commanding officer, Kurasame Susaya, as well as the class members themselves, to the front lines in the upcoming battle against joint Militesi-Concordian forces, expecting them to perish.
Central Command prepares for the upcoming showdown with a plan is to send Class Zero with Lord Zhuyu to fight off the Concordian dragons with an airship fleet, and the rest of Rubrum's legionaries, as well as Akademeia's cadets and trainees, to the Militesi border for Vermilion Bird Secundus l'Cie Lady Caetuna to summon a Verboten Eidolon. Trainees have never been sent to war before, and two l'Cie taking part in Rubrum's military operations simultaneously is unheard of. Many see these as signs of the dominion's desperation.
Caetuna's Alexander demolishes the Militesi forces turning the tide of battle to Rubrum's favor. The dominion conquers Concordia and soon after the Milites Empire falls as well, and Orience is united under the Vermilion Bird banner. As Class Zero returns to Akademeia from the battle of Ingram they find its cadets and legionaries slain and the dominion commanders gone: Tempus Finis has begun and the Rursus Army has invaded Akademeia, Lord Zhuyu having fallen to them as well.
Other cadets reveal the once Code Crimson missions, which Class Zero partook, making the remaining cadets turn against them, blaming them for the ensuing apocalypse. Rem succumbs to her illness and falls into a coma, and she is taken to Arecia's office but the prognosis doesn't look favorable. Of the Consortium of Eight only Arecia remains, who tells the cadets they have lived their lives according to the Will of Crystals recorded in the Akashic Records, but now that "souls have been released" they can write their own ending, as humans have the power to decide how they live or die, hinting at a vital decision the cadets would soon need to make.
The cadets learn that Militesi Marshal Cid Aulstyne has headed to Pandæmonium, the Land of Judgement that rises from the ocean when Tempus Finis starts, said to be the place where the Judge decides on Orience's fate: if there is no Agito, the world will be destroyed. Despite knowing that without Arecia they cannot be revived if they fall in battle, the cadets endeavor to follow and speak with the Judge. Celestia, the Azure Dragon Secundus l'Cie, arrives at Akademeia offering to take the class to Pandæmonium, as the Vermilion Bird has no l'Cie left.
After the cadets depart the Vermilion Bird Crystal asks them to become its l'Cie, but the class turns down the offer. The Crystal brands Rem, still slumped in Arecia's office, in their stead, and sends her to Pandæmonium to intercept a White Tiger l'Cie it had sensed there, wanting one of its own l'Cie to become Agito. Rem sublimates alongside the White Tiger l'Cie, but Class Zero prevails against the Rursan Arbiter as mortals despite having been deemed unfit to be Agito. After the battle the dying cadets are teleported back to their old classroom, which they find in ruins.
Arecia learns from the class members' souls they do not want to be revived for another spira, and, heeding their wish, departs from Orience forever after releasing Machina and Rem from crystal stasis and sending them back to Akademeia. Machina and Rem find their classmates dead, and mourn for the loss of those close to them for the first time in their life, realizing their memories of the cadets have not been erased; as Arecia departs from Orience the light of the Crystals dims and mankind is allowed to remember the dead, Orience entering a new era where mankind must learn to cope without reliance on the Crystals power. What becomes of Rubrum and Akademeia in this new era is unknown, as without the Vermilion Bird Crystal it is likely people can no longer wield magic.
Locations[]
Outside Entrance[]
- Main Gate
The entrance building to Akademeia. It has magical barriers that prevent entry further into the academy, and the entrance is guided by dominion tribunes. There is a relic terminal to save the game before heading out. A tribune here offers Class Zero the option to partake in Expert Trials, and a queastor here often has tasks to procure munitions for the dominion logistics department.
- Fountain Courtyard
The central area leading from the Main Gate to the Entrance building, the Arena, and the Airship Landing. At the center is a fountain with the statue of a Vermilion Bird. A Class First Moogle at the entrance to the main building rewards players with items when they reach play hour milestones.
- Arena
Located on the western path of the Fountain Courtyard, this is a colosseum-like area where cadets can take on combat practice. There is a relic terminal here.
- Airship Landing
Good day, cadet. Where can we take you today?
Airship Attendant
Located on the eastern path of the Fountain Courtyard, this is where airships are docked. Akademeia's airships are looked after by a private contractor after the administration found the people in charge of the airships' security systems neglectful. The flight division was disbanded and a private firm was hired instead.
Airship shuttles become available in Chapter 3. They can be taken to a region currently controlled by Rubrum, and thus more destinations become available as more areas are liberated. Using this service costs gil. Once Class Zero gets their own airship, the Setzer, it will be docked here and can be boarded by the cadets at will. There is also a relic terminal here.
Destination | Cost |
---|---|
Iscah | 100 gil |
Mi-Go | 150 gil |
Cetme | 500 gil |
Roshana | 1200 gil |
Bazz | 1800 gil |
Interior Entrance[]
- Entrance
The foyer of the main building of the academy. In the center is the Great Portal that leads to various locations, while six smaller teleporters around the room lead to the various classrooms. Cadets are not authorized to visit other classrooms than their own. A moogle here collects Knowing Tags, awarding items for those who turn in many at once.
- Central Command
A briefing room located north of the Great Portal in the Entrance, reachable by twin staircases. Senior commanders gather here, and the player can find out the next storyline mission in advance and progress straight to mission day if they so wish. There are often people giving out tasks here, and the cadets can use the SPP Shop.
- Crystarium
The Crystarium is located in the room east of the Entrance. A massive lending library, it houses the Rubicus, the glossary on the information on Orience and its denizens. Quon Yobatz is sometimes found here.
- Kazusa's Laboratory
The secret laboratory of Kazusa Futahito, located behind a bookshelf in the Crystarium, where he conducts experiments on various Akademeia members. After Kazusa first takes a Class Zero cadet here, the laboratory can be accessed any time afterwards, but Kazusa himself is only found there when there is 6 hours or less of free time left on the clock.
Classroom Zero[]
- Hallway
Located in the room west of the Entrance, it is the hallway leading to Classroom Zero. It houses a relic terminal and a portal leading to the Altocrystarium.
- Altocrystarium
A room where one can activate and access the Altocrystarium System. Access is prohibited from all but those authorized by the Sorcery Division, and thus it is usually empty. The Altocrystarium can be accessed from the menu at relic terminals after having visited it the first time.
- Classroom Zero
The classroom for Class Zero. During free time, Moglin offers lectures to increase the party's stats, and an orderly is present to sell items. The cadets report here for briefing on their next mission, and at times hang out there during free time as well.
- Back Garden
A small outdoor area leading out from Classroom Zero and to the cemetery. It is a quiet and enclosed area with benches where the cadets can relax.
- Cemetery
The cemetery where people of the dominion remember the fallen. It is entered from the back garden, but it is impossible to enter this area, and it is only present in cutscenes. The names of those fallen are engraved on the grave markers here.
Great Portal[]
- Sorcery
The area of the Sorcery Division that specializes in researching magic, Eidolons, phantoma and the Vermilion Bird Crystal. This area has a man who allows Class Zero to accept special orders during missions, and a researcher who heads the investigation on Emina Hanaharu with which Class Zero can help. Sometimes the researchers task Class Zero with procuring certain types of phantoma.
- Dr. Al-Rashia's Office
The office of Dr. Arecia Al-Rashia, located in the Sorcery room and further in is the crystal room for the Vermilion Bird Crystal. It is impossible to enter this area, and is only present in cutscenes. Here the doctor can give check ups to students and prescribe medication.
- Armory
The area of the Sixth Armory Guild that provides equipment for cadets. Class Eleventh students often hang out here, as well as dominion legionaries and cadets wanting to equip themselves. Class Eleventh students help the Armory division in research into better gear. The capricious explosives expert Mutsuki Chiharano is sometimes found here, as is Ryid Uruk, a cadet of Lorican ancestry.
- Ready Room
The academy's cafeteria, a common place for students to hang out.
- Lounge
A lounge for students to hang out and relax. The ever entrepreneurial Carla Ayatsugi is sometimes found here offering "deals" to fellow cadets.
- Terrace
One of many balconies, it is another common place for students to hang out when the weather is nice. It is a common meeting place, especially for couples, and Class Zero cadets can take a breather on the bench to reflect. Emina Hanaharu is found here when there is fewer than 6 hours on the clock.
- Chocobo Ranch
A small island located separately from the academy, where chocobos are bred and raised. Cadets can breed their chocobos to gain new ones, and can also try out riding a chocobo for free.
Quests[]
During free time between missions, a variety of quests are available around Akademeia.
Events[]
Events are interactions with characters—both conversations and cutscenes—that yield reward items if selected. Events consume two free time hours when they are selected for the first time, so it is not possible to complete all events in one playthrough.
Lectures[]
Lectures are held at Classroom Zero where attending lecture boosts the cadets' stats. Moglin offers a variety of lectures during free times,
Tasks[]
Tasks are requests from clients to fulfill a specific objective, such as procuring items or defeating a number of enemies, to claim a reward. Tasks do not consume hours and can only be taken one at a time. Task givers are found all around Akademeia, but the tasks are usually only available for a short while and become unavailable after the next storyline mission.
Expert Trials[]
Expert Trials are optional missions that can be taken to reclaim overworld territory in advance, as well as offer more missions to be replayed. Their levels are usually higher than the player's current level when they are first available, encouraging players to attempt them in New Game Plus.
Cactuar Sightings[]
The traitor among the "Four Champions of Rubrum", which included Class Zero's commanding officer Kurasame Susaya, was said to have owned a pet Cactuar just like how Kurasame has a pet Tonberry. Though the traitor perished in his attempt to kill his comrades, the Cactuar is said to still lurk in Akademeia.
The player can randomly encounter it while exploring certain areas of Akademeia. These areas include: Terrace, Chocobo Ranch, Back Garden and the Airship Landing. If encountered, the cactuar leaves behind Yugino's Crystal. It also drops an item needed for completing a task and couple random items, including a Crystal Shard and a Wizard's Hat.
Kazusa's sidequest[]
Kazusa is initially found in the Armory. After doing an event with him, he takes the cadet to his secret lab in the Crystarium. Afterward the player can enter the lab at will. Kazusa's events are available only only the last 6 hours of the day. One must visit him with different cadets to view seven different events. If the player has got all seven events in Chapter 7 they can unlock 7 new events.
Emina's sidequest[]
Emina is found on the Akademeia Terrace when there is 6 hours or less left of the day. After making her acquaintance the player can find a man at the Sorcery Division who tasks Class Zero with spying on Emina to discover whether she is an imperial spy. The player must give her presents bought from towns to view cutscenes, and talk to the man in Sorcery to raise the "spy level" after enough scenes have been viewed.

Musical themes[]
Several themes are played in Akademeia. The first and most prominent is "Crystal Guide Us" (クリタルの加護, Kurisutaru no Kago?), which is a variation of the "Prelude", the iconic theme familiar from the series. "Peaceful Times" (静謐な時間, Seihitsu na Jikan?) plays after several storyline missions are completed, and eventually becomes the main background theme midway through the story. The third background theme is "Battle - Recapture Strategy" (戦-奪還作戦, Ikusa - Dakkan Sakusen?), which plays midway through Chapter 7.

Behind the scenes[]
Art Director Yusuke Naora journeyed to a remote island off the coast of Japan that took over half a day of traveling to get there. While on the island he caught a fish, but realized he feared the open ocean. This formed the basis for his inspiration for the island home to Akademeia. The wrecked airship off the coast of the island is inspired by Naora's fear of the sea.[1]
The nature of the surprise attack on Akademeia draws upon many of the raids and assaults carried out by aircraft in World War II, notably to that of Nazi Germany's attacks on London, the Imperial Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor, and to the United States' firebombing of Tokyo.
