Cooler Mammoth is a boss in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, fought by Palom and Porom during Porom's Tale.

In the PSP version released as part of Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, the Octo-kraken and its tentacles switch their color schemes with the Cooler Mammoth and its tentacles—the purple Octokraken became red and the red Cooler Mammoth became purple. Both enemies are restored to their proper colors for the iOS release.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Cooler Mammoth is fought alongside a number of Cooler Leeches. It is weak against Fire. If all Cooler Leeches are killed, Cooler Mammoth will regenerate them. The Cooler Mammoth uses strong physical attacks. The Cooler Leeches can cast Blizzara and buff the Cooler Mammoth with Shell.

Strategy[]

Porom should cast Slow on all targets immediately. After slowing down the enemies, the player should put both Palom and Porom on Protect, Shell, and Haste. Since the Cooler Mammoth is weak against fire, the player should make Palom use Fira. The player should focus on using Fira on the Cooler Mammoth only and avoid killing the Cooler Leeches. The easiest way to deal with the Leeches is to have Porom group-cast Silence disabling their spells.

If Palom runs out of MP the player should use a Ether on him right away. The player should make Porom focus on using Cura throughout most of the battle and avoid using the Twincast Band in this battle, since it takes a long time to charge.

Etymology[]

A mammoth is any species of the extinct genus Mammuthus, one of the many genera that make up the order of trunked mammals called proboscideans. The various species of mammoth were commonly equipped with long, curved tusks and, in northern species, a covering of long hair. They lived from the Pliocene epoch (from around 5 million years ago) into the Holocene at about 4,000 years ago, and various species existed in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. They were members of the family Elephantidae, which also contains the two genera of modern elephants and their ancestors. Today, the word "mammoth" is often used to describe abnormally large animals or objects.

The "Cooler" part of the name might be due to a mistranslation: its Japanese name (クラー) is the same as the first three kana for the word "Kraken" (クラーケン).
