Thugly is a boss in the Donkey Kong series, first appearing in Donkey Kong Country Returns. He is the boss of the game's sixth world, Cliff, and is hypnotized by Xylobone to battle Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. He is a distant relative of Mugly, an earlier boss, and has similar attacks and weaknesses to him. Physically, he is purple rather than yellow, and he has black armored plates covering his back as opposed to retractable spikes.
History[]
Donkey Kong Country Returns[]
Thugly appears as a boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns, being the boss in the game's sixth world, battled in the level Thugly's Highrise. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong storm his hideout, seeing him eating their bananas. Before they can battle him, the Tiki Tak Tribe fly airships around the cliff, and Xylobone appears to hypnotize him to battle the Kongs.
Thugly has a very similar strategy to Mugly, as he will charge at the Kongs to strike them with his horn. While charging, his back plates will become hot, and will damage the Kongs if they try to jump on him. They slide back and reveal his weak spot when he skids to a stop, which is when the Kongs must strike him. He can also charge into a wall, causing rocks from above to fall on the Kongs. After this, he falls on his back and is unable to get up, which leaves him vulnerable for attack. Thugly can also leap in the air and strike the ground to create a shockwave.
After taking three hits, Thugly will become angry and turn orange. He then slams the ground, taking the Kongs to another part of the arena. In this state, he is faster, and gains a new attack where he breathes a long, continuous stream of fire. The only way to dodge it is to duck under it. The shockwaves he creates are also faster.
Three more hits will make Thugly turn red, and he takes the Kongs to the lowest part of his lair. In addition to all the above attacks being faster, Thugly gains another attack where he spits a fireball over the Kongs, which will split into several smaller fireballs that must be dodged. After three more hits, Thugly will be defeated.
Once defeated, Donkey Kong strikes Thugly in the stomach, breaking him out of his hypnosis. He will leap into the air as his back plates jump off of him before he lands on his stomach. The plates land back on his back and he faints. Xylobone then appears dizzy, and Donkey Kong punches him multiple times before sending him away.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]
Thugly appears as a Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, obtainable at random or after being purchased from the Trophy Shop.
- "Thugly charges at you after being hypnotized by Xylophone Tiki. The weak spot on his back is well protected by an opposite-of-a-weak-spot shell. When he comes to an abrupt halt, the shell will flip forward. At last, the time to strike! Thugly should really get some bungee cords or something to hold that in place."
Appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. Charged[]
Thugly is represented as a Trophy and Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Charged. He is an Ace-type Spirit that, when equipped, makes the user's smash attacks have a 20% chance of dealing more damage and knockback. The Spirit battle is a stamina battle against Rambi, who is aggressive and starts the battle with a Superspicy Curry.
Thugly | |
Thugly resides on the cliffsides of Donkey Kong Island, gorging on the bananas there. He may have been willing to share with the Kongs if Xylobone didn't barge in and take control of the situation! He can charge at you like Mugly, but his back isn't always exposed. The white-hot plates on his back will open whenever he slows down, so time your hits and make sure you don't get burnt! | |
