Plot[]
Prolougue[]
Many years ago, an unknown land named Islands of the Elements was discovered in a far away place. Huge armies have sailed to the land and have battled for decades, until a truce between two armies ended the never-ending battle. The land was divided to nine tribes equally so no one could fight over who gets more. Each of the tribes has a Tribe Captain that rules their specific tribe. These tribes were the Fire Tribe, Life Tribe, Wind Tribe, Undead Tribe, Tech Tribe, Earth Tribe, Light Tribe, Dark Tribe, and the Magic Tribe. Peace spread amoung the tribes and everything was swell until an evil force awakened. The Magic Tribe's Captain became mad with power and declared war on the other tribes, but was unfortunately defeated and was exiled to a cursed land known as the Shadow Islands and all of it's people left and peace was once again achieved...until now.
Several years later, a comet from outer space crash landed in the Islands of the Elements and inside it was an unknown relic named the Calamity Heart, an artifact that can bring unmeasurable power to it's user and can conquer any foe. Because of it's immense power, the Life Tribe was given responsibility of hiding it inside a cave and was sealed with mysterious spheres known as Spirit Keys and were later hidden away. However, the energy reached all the way to the Shadow Islands and awakened an evil army of black spirits that were called Shadow Sprites. The Magic Tribe Captain discovered these and later trained them to be under his control and returned, seeking revenge.
Meanwhile, in the land of the Dark Tribe known as Twila Town, the player takes control of a young woman named Miradama who works as a maid to a rich family. After a tutorial on how to move around places, loud voices are heard outside. Shadow Sprites have invaded Twila Town and are currently destroying the place and soldiers fighting back. One of the Shadow Sprites is killed and drops two huge sized blades that Miradama uses to defend against herself. However, she is sneak attacked by Shadow Sprites, until a flash of light coming from her palms petrify it. Then an old man confronts her and asks her to come to his house for more information. Inside, Miradama tells him how the beast that was going to attack suddenly froze. The old man is suprised and says that she is one of The Chosen Ones and is part of a prophecy. When they head outside, they are ambushed by three of the creatures and engage in a tutorial battle.
Chapter One - Looking in the Sands[]
After the fight, he tells Miradama that she should take the train to the Land of the Earth Tribe. But when she gets to the train station, the conductor tells her that one of the Shadow Sprites had stole the key and the train won't function without it. After finding the key, the train begins to function again and heads towards Origin Desert, the Land of the Earth Tribe. When the train arrives, Miradama must fight scorpions and other enemies to get to the city. Once she arrives in the city, she starts asking the citizens for answers while fighting off Shadow Sprites. However, she is immediately caught and taken into the palace by two guards to meet face to face with the Tribe Captain of the Earth Tribe, King Pharosand. He starts asking her questions about who she is and what are her plans. Miradama says that she is part of The Chosen Ones and that she needs the Spirit Key.
Before King Pharosand makes his decision, a pack of Shadow Sprites attack the city, resulting in Miradama and King Pharosand forming a temporary truce, rendering him playable. After defeating the Shadow Sprites, Miradama asks if he knows where the first Spirit Key is, which he replies that it was hidden somewhere under the city. They both go into the underground and start searching while battling mummys, scorpions, and more Shadow Sprites. The underground leads to a pyramid where the Spirit Key is. Just before she grabs it, Pharosand says that he had a guardian keeping it safe and the guardian of the pyramid, Sandstone Golem, conviently shows up, starting the first boss. After defeating the boss and getting the first Spirit Key, some writing shines from the walls and shows that King Pharosand is one of The Chosen Ones and permanently joins the team, while saying his goodbyes to his people.
Miradama then looks at the map she was given and sets her next destination to the Jade Village, the Land of the Life Tribe, but wonders how she'll get their since it's up in the mountains. King Pharosand says that he has a secret tunnel that should lead to the village. So they both go under the castle and remove a bookshelf where the tunnel is and they both walk to the Jade Village.
Chapter Two - Life on the Summit[]
After exiting the tunnel, Miradama and King Pharosand climbs up the mountains while fighting mountain lions, birds, and more Shadow Sprites to get into the Jade Village. When they get to the top, the gate is blocked off by soldiers, forcing them to go through the nearby forest. However, they instead find a lone shroom-like person sitting on a tree stump meditating. He introduces himself as Shroomurai who was on break with his friend Nutty. Miradama explains her dilemma which Shroomurai say that he knows where the Spirit Key should be, but sends them on a quest to prove themselves by getting him a rare fruit inside a deep cave in the summit. Both then ascend up furthur to the snowy mountains and enters a cave to retrieve the Mint Lime while getting chased by a yeti. They both return to the forest where Shroomurai says that he needed the fruit to make some tea, angering King Pharosand and leading him to beating up Nutty. Miradama calms him down and revieves the location to the Spirit Key.
Shroomurai also joins the party to ensure that this "evil force" doesn't succeed, though King Pharosand disagrees, he proves himself by slashing a chameleon-like Shadow Sprite behind them. After sneaking into the village, they look for himts about the location until they come across an old dungeon filled with puzzles and enemies. After clearing the dungeon is the Spirit Key which is guarded by a giant anaconda, Slither. Miradama nearly gets the Spirit Key until some Shadow Sprites attack and wakes up Slither, triggering another boss fight. After the fight, the dungeon starts to collapse and the player has 4 minutes to escape or they'll have to start over. Then, the team goes to the castle to ask for the Spirit Key while explaining they're story. He agrees to let them have it as thanks for wrecking the dungeon as he was planning on turning it into a hot spring.
Gameplay[]
Remnant of Calamity features many traditional RPG elements; the player controls a party of characters who travel through the game's three dimensional world that is composed of villages, jungles, dungeons, etc. Players can jump, crouch, walk, run, and attack in the various environments in the game.
Along the way, battles are fought against enemies, after which, the party receives experience points for victories. If enough experience points are acquired, a character's level will increase. This increases the character's attributes, like strength, defense, and health.
Enemies can also be fought by having physical contact between them and the character. When encountered, the screen switches to battle mode. In combat, characters and enemies possess a certain amount of health. Successive blows to an enemy reduces the amount of health. Once an enemy's health bar reaches zero, they are defeated. In battle, the player is allowed to choose specific actions for their characters.
These actions can include attacking, healing, defending, or the use of items. Characters can also use special attacks that require "Calamity Points." Once each character is assigned a command, the characters and enemies perform their actions in a set order, determined by the player. Whenever a character receives damage, the health bar decreases. This allows players an opportunity to heal the character or win the battle before the counter hits zero, after which the character is knocked out.
If all characters are KO'ed, the game ends. Because battles are not random, tactical advantages can be gained. If the player physically contacts or attacks an enemy from behind, the player is given a first-strike priority. However, this also applies to enemies, who can also engage the party from behind. Uniquely, as the entire team become stronger, battles with weaker enemies are eventually won automatically, forgoing the entire battle sequence altogether.
Currency is diesctly received from finding treasure chests or defeating enemies. Stopping at any campfires will also save the game's progress. Each time the party wins a battle, enemies will drop certain amount of cash, depending if they're strong or not. In towns, players can visit various department stores where weapons, armor, and items can be bought and upgraded while cash can be deposited or withdrawn. Weapons and armor can be equipped to increase character strength and defense, respectively. Towns also house several other useful facilities such as hospitals or magical fountains where players can be healed.
There are also stats that can be increased when leveling up. The five stats are HP (increases health), Speed (determines who moves first), Attack (powers up moves), Defense (reduces received damage), and Luck (increases chances of crit hits). Leveling up also increases Calamity Points, which allow you to use your "Special" moves more often. There are many items hidden in theworld that can be used to heal, upgrade, or traded for special uses.
