Moogles are a species native to the Final Fantasy franchise, they are somewhat of a mascot for the series a trait shared with the the Black Mage and Chocobo. Moogles typically appear in more neutral roles throughout the series often appearing as NPCs who may offer to help the player in various ways but generally aren't integral to the main plot of each game.

Appearance[]

Moogles vary somewhat in appearance across the series although typically are a chibi creature with a white or off-white body, a red button nose, distinctive bat-like wings and a large red pom-pom on their heads. Much of the rest of the creature's design varies based on the designer with some opting for the creature's more classical look where it has permanently closed eyes, a large bulbous head and a small humanoid body with stubby formless limbs as well as small tufts of fur across its body and two small cat-like ears. Other depictions have the Moogle shown to be smooth without fur tufts, others have the pom-pom more uniform in appearance being closer to a ball while others less uniform and closer to an actual pom-pom (notably Final Fantasy XIII depicts Moogles as having a jewel instead of the standard Pom-Pom).

Some depictions of Moogles notably those of Final Fantasy XII depict the Moogles very differently to normal, not only having a more rabbit-like appearance but also varying the colour of their pom-pom, having them have more developed limbs and being shown to wear regular clothing. Some other depictions also show the Moogles to wear clothes although this is often limited to accessories.

Abilities[]

Moogle's abilities vary greatly from game to game although most depictions have them as a magically-inclined species that is capable of speech. Due to their more NPC-based roles in the series not much is shown about much of their abilities.

In Final Fantasy VI the first playable Moogle in the series known as Mog appeared. He featured a unique ability called Dance which allowed Mog to perform various attacks to harm the enemy or help his allies in battle based on the environment he's in as well as on rare occasions summoning creatures to help him out.

Final Fantasy IX meanwhile, featured Moogles being associated with Summoners as they were shown to be friends to the Summoner Eiko, notably the Eidolon known as Madeen disguised itself as a Moogle throughout Final Fantasy IX as the pet Moogle of Eiko.

In Final Fantasy XII Moogles take on a substantially different role in society, being depicted as great Engineers in their world that help the other races during conflicts. It should be noted however that some Moogles in this game are also shown to take on other roles suggesting a fighting prowess and potential for magic among some of their species' members, although whether this is universal like in previous games is unknown.
