Mario Tennis: Grand Slam is an upcoming sports game, being the eight direct installment to the Mario Tennis series, the second installment released to the Nintendo Switch, and the third installment to have a Story Mode, succeeding Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Tennis: Power Tour. Like the previous installments, Mario Tennis: Grand Slam features traditional tennis gameplay with various Mario series elements mixed in, such as the playable characters and the gimmicks introduced in courts. Some mechanics and character designs from Mario Tennis Aces reappear, but the Trick Shots work similar to the Defensive Power Shots from Mario Power Tennis (though they are activated in the same way).

Gameplay[]

The base gameplay of Mario Tennis: Grand Slam remains largely the same as the gameplay seen in Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. The main objective of each match is much similar to a normal game of tennis, players will have to hit the ball back and forth with their racket. If the ball passes the other player's baseline, the player hits the ball into the net, etc, the other will score a point (equals to 15 points), and a match's game ends when someone scores after their 30 point mark. If both players have 30 points, it is considered a "deuce", and whoever scores two more times wins that game and gains a game point. The player who wins a number of game points wins a set or a match. Matches can be divided into sets. If two players tie during a set, it results in a "tiebreaker", where one player must reach seven points to win the set or match.

Shot types[]

There are many shot types the player can perform in-game. Basic Shots can be performed with a press of a button (some require a press of two buttons), and leave their respective color trail when their Chance Shot version are performed. Energy Shots use up the character's energy meter.

Basic Shots
Shot Type Button(s) Description
MTD Topspin
Topspin
A Button Topspins are shots that spin forward, has a high arc and bounces high. The Chance Shot version drastically pushes the receiving opponent back, and they leave an orange-red trail. They can be countered with a Slice Chance Shot.
MTD Flat
Flat
Y Button Flats do not make the ball spin and are faster than any other shot. The Chance Shot version is basically a Smash Shot, but it is stronger and leaves a purple trail. They can be countered with a Topspin Chance Shot.
MTD Slice
Slice
B Button Slices are low shots with a backspin, are slow and bounces low. The Chance Shot version is a highly curving slice which causes receiving players to spin out of control for a brief moment, and leaves blue sparkling trail. They can be countered with a Flat Chance Shot.
MTD Lob
Lob
A ButtonB Button Lobs are very high shots with a high bounce aimed at the back of the court. The Chance Shot version is a curving extreme lob that bounces at the back edge of the court, which leaves a yellow trail and can be countered with a Drop Shot Chance Shot.
MTD Dropshot
Drop Shot
A ButtonB Button Drop Shots are low shots with a low bounce aimed at the front of the court. The Chance Shot version is an even lower shot than the normal Drop Shot, and does not bounce. They leave a gray trail and can be countered with a Lob Chance Shot.

Zone Shot
NS R Button2 or NS ZR Button2 while on a star point Zone Shots require a third of the player's energy meter, and allows them to aim and shoot the ball in a first-person perspective. It has the potential to inflict damage on the opposing player's racket, but only one third of it will get destroyed before it completely breaks.
TBA
Trick Shot
X Buttonx2 while tilting Left Stick towards the ball Trick Shots in Grand Slam work similar to the Defensive Power Shots from Power Tour; used to return faraway balls back to the other side of the court. However, it can only be performed when the energy meter reaches the middle, and uses a third of the meter. Also, if the ball is too far away, it is not likely the move will work, and the player will waste some of their energy.
