LEGO Mario Party is a spinoff installment of the Mario Party series. The game was first conceived after a partnership between Nintendo and TT Games. Therefore, TT Games is the developer of the game while Nintendo is the publisher. LEGO Mario Party is notable in that the characters are now made in the likeness of a Lego minifigure. Coins, for the most part, are replaced by studs. Players interact with each other on virtual boards and then play a minigame either after every turn or after every other turn. Players can use items to advance themselves or hinder others by ? Blocks and shops. The game boasts 75 minigames in total. Mario-related amiibos can also be used in this game.

Plot[]

One day, Captain Toad went out on an adventure into Rock-Candy Mines and found a treasure chest. Inside the treasure chest, he found a Mega Star.

MegaStar

Awestruck by the novel discovery, Captain Toad ran back to the Mushroom Kingdom to show his friends. The group gathered around the star before Wario exclaimed that he should take the Mega Star since he deserved it. Toad interjects by saying that he should have it and the group then erupts into conflict over who deserved the glamorous star. Mario then hatched an idea of having a party to settle who should get the Mega Star!

Gameplay[]

The game's main menu.

Party []

The main mode of the game, players go around a board with the ultimate goal of collecting the most stars as possible. Players hit a dice block ranging from 1-6 or 1-10 (depending on the size of the board) to determine who gets to go first and start their turn sooner. On traditional boards, players have to pay 20 studs to get a star. Players have the option of doing a Battle Royale where all four players battle each other. 4-Player Teams have the players go at it in teams of two. Returning from Mario Party 7 is 8-Player Teams for large groups. This returning feature will be further explained down below.

Turns[]

10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, or 50 turns can be selected for each game.

Minigames[]

All minigames in this game are unlocked by default so players don't have to go through the tedious grind of unlocking them all at random. This gives players the abilitity to disable whatever minigame(s) they like from Party. Minigames are divided into five categories: Free-for-All, Team, 1-vs.-3, Battle, and Bonus.

Bonus Stars[]

This option can be turned on or off. If left on, three of five bonus stars will be picked for a player to receive at the end of the game.

Minigame Star: Awarded to the player(s) that won the most minigames.

Stud Star: Awarded to the player(s) that had the most studs by the end of the game.

Item Star: Awarded to the player(s) that used the most items.

Hitchhiker Star: Awarded to the player(s) that had traveled the most spaces.

Happening Star: Awarded to the player(s) that landed on the most Happening Spaces.

Minigames []

The online functionality has been completely overhauled since Super Mario Party so players now have the option of playing all of the minigames either online or offline.

Free Play[]

Players can play and practice any minigame they'd like here with friends or people around the world.

Tournament[]

Local[]

In this game mode, entrants (ranging from 8-32) battle each other in a tournament for Party Studs and "bragging rights." The first time that a player enters a tournament, they are automatically entered in three Leaderboards. One for their state or province, one for their country, and one for the world. Locally, up to 8 players can participate in a tournament. Free-for-All, Team, Battle, and Bonus type minigames are legal in a tournament (although the players can choose to deem certain minigames "illegal" and disable them). 1-vs-3 minigames are excluded due to the unfair nature of one player going up against three. Completing a local tournament will earn the player a modest amount of Party Studs.

Online[]
FotoJet (1)-0

An online tournament minigame about to begin.

Online tournaments allow for up to 32 entrants. All minigames outside of the 1-vs-3 ones are considered legal without any way of modifying that. Matchmaking will hook the player up to a tournament that has the "most suitable connection" to minimize lag issues. When a tournament gets more entrants, the chance of having to wait for a game increases. During the downtime, the player can either check out their opponents/allies' profile or play a little game where they have to input a specific set of buttons for Party Studs; i.e. B, A, X, ZL, X, A, B. The faster it's done, the more studs earned. Also note that online tournaments do have the tendency to get aggressive. Oftentimes, a single tournament can have players from over ten different countries around the world that have studied and practiced these minigames. Therefore, winning an online tournament can net an abundant prize of studs and "even more bragging rights."

Tournament Progression[]
Tournament Finals

A final Team minigame about to commence in a tournament.

In a tournament, entrants advance by earning first place in a minigame. In the event that two or more players get first place, a tiebreaker will be initiated where the 2+ players must inflate a balloon as big as possible without bursting it. Whoever has the biggest balloon without popping it is deemed the winner of the round. A tournament is divided into four main segments: Pools, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and Finals. Each bracket is associated with a round number i.e. the second bracket (Round 2) or the fifth bracket (Round 5).

Galaxy Invaders[]

In this game mode, up to four players compete against each other in ten randomly-selected minigames. After playing the ten minigames, the four players are then pitted in a fight for survival out in space in their own spaceships against waves of increasingly difficult invaders. Each player has a set of HP points. Each time that a player wins first place in a minigame will get 10 HP points.

2nd -- 5 HP.

3rd -- 3 HP.

And 4th -- 1 HP.

The more HP that a player has, the longer they can stay in the game. The objective of the game mode after completing the minigames is to survive as long as possible with the HP available while knocking out the other players. There are two ways that a player can lose HP and get knocked out of the game. One could lose HP by

getting hit by an invader or they could lose HP by getting hit by another player's item. Items can be gotten by filling up the Star Counter to 100 points as seen in the picture. Once the Star Counter is at 100 points, the player's item roulette is triggered and they will earn a random item. Every spaceship is equipped with standard blasters to destroy invaders. These blasters cannot hurt other players. Invaders pour into the map almost as soon as the game starts. Waves progress in a manner of World 1-1, World 1-2, etc. In the extremely rare event that the game progresses all the way to World 8-🏰, all players' HP will drop down to 5 and then an overwhelming number of invaders will spawn. This is called Sudden Death. Whoever survives this, wins. In most normal games, however, the victor is determined by the last man standing with more than 0 HP.

Invaders[]

The main enemies of Galaxy Invaders. They can be a player's key to victory or a player's downfall to defeat.

Name Info Appears by...
Goombazoid Slowly moves around the map and doesn't shoot back at players. Very common invader. Touching a player will cause it to explode on contact and deal 5 HP damage to the player.
  • Blaster Hits: 3
  • Star Counter: 5
World 1-1
Koopa Trooper Not very fast, but does shoot at players every so often. Common invader. Deals 1 HP damage every second to a player that touches this invader. Players also take 7 HP damage if they get hit by a shot from this invader.
  • Blaster Hits: 5
  • Star Counter: 7
World 1-1
Amp Moves slightly faster than a Koopa Trooper and does not have the ability to shoot at players. Not as common as Koopa Troopers, but still fairly common. Players should do everything they can to steer clear of this invader because of make contact, that's 15 HP damage from the electrical current. Amps do not self-destruct after touching a player like the Goombazoid, rather, their electrical current recharges for five seconds.
  • Blaster Hits: 6
  • Star Counter: 9
World 1-3
ESS Bandit Can move in a direction in a very quick and erratic manner. Appears once every round after World 1-3. Their main deal is trying to steal a player's HP for themselves. Once quickly making contact with a player, this invader could steal anywhere from 5-25 HP. They will then try to make their escape off from the screen. (*Note: For a player that has dangerously low HP, this could be their ticket to making a great rebound).
  • Blaster Hits: 2 (the player that destroys this invader gets all of their HP)
  • Star Counter: 12
World 1-4
Chain Chomper Chooses a direction to follow and then flies across the map in that direction until hitting an invisible wall. Doesn't shoot at players and is uncommon. Players that get hit by this invader's sweeping attack will take a walloping 20 HP damage.
  • Blaster Hits: 15
  • Star Counter: 20
World 1-🏰
X-Press A warship that finds a spot in the map and stays there until it gets destroyed. Two appear every round after World 1-🏰. It will spray its blasters onto a specific map of the map that could do devastating damage to a player's HP if they are in the way.
  • Blaster Hits: 12
  • Star Counter: 20
World 2-1
Torkdrift A large invader that covers up to a quarter of the whole playing area. Uncommon. This familiar invader designates three to four areas of the map and then inundates them with lasers. This invader along with the X-Press can really tighten up the space where the players can maneuver.
  • Blaster Hits: 35
  • Star Counter: 60
World 2-1
Items[]

These can be obtained whenever the Star Counter is maxed out. They can be used to upgrade a player's own ship or to devastate invaders and other players alike.

Image Item Description
Galaxy Invaders Items (2) Dash Mushroom Enables a player to dash through the map, clobbering players and invaders in the way. A player can lose anywhere from 3-10 HP depending on when they get hit by the dashing player. Same goes for invaders, they could take anywhere from 4-8 Blaster Hits.
Galaxy Invaders Items (1)-0 Poison Mushroom Will set up a hex trap on the map that can only be triggered by other players. Once a player drives over it, they will lose 8-10 HP. The trap will not disappear until another player goes over it.
Galaxy Invaders Items (3) Bob-omb When a player activates this item, the Bob-omb can either be set behind them or thrown ahead of them (similar to Mario Kart). The Bob-omb will either explode after three seconds or upon contact with another player or invader. The explosion covers approximately 1/4th of the whole playing area. Other players that get caught in the explosion will lose 15 HP while invaders will take 12 Blaster Hits.
Galaxy Invaders Items (4) Bullet Bill A Bullet Bill will be fired and home in on the nearest player and focus on just that player. It's faster than a player's spaceship and will cause a loss 10-12 HP upon explosive impact. The Bullet Bill can be shot at and destroyed with the blasters, although this does not normally happen due to the Bullet Bill's speed; making this one of the more dreadful items of the game.
Galaxy Invaders Items (5) Pink Boo Makes the player invisible for 14 seconds. Thus, enabling them to go through invaders and other players' items without harm.
Galaxy Invaders Items (6) NES Zapper Upgrades the player's blasters for a full 60 seconds. Each blast will now counts for two Blasters Hits instead of one. Fire rate is doubled and now the player can perform a charge shot. The charge shot takes 3 seconds to charge and can actually damage other players as they will lose 10-15 HP upon getting hit. Invaders will take 12-15 Blaster Hits from a charge shot.
Galaxy Invaders Items (7) Rear Shield When activated, the shield will occupy the rear bumper of the player's spaceship and protect their back. The front side remains unprotected. The shield has 20 HP of its own and will only disappear once all of its HP is gone. All attacks from invaders and other players that hit the rear will be absorbed by the shield and take damage for the player. Especially comes in handy against the dreadful Bullet Bill. The shield also changes color to fit the theme of the player using it i.e. pink for Peach and green for Luigi.
Galaxy Invaders Items (8) Lightning The most powerful item in here and the most rare. Once a player gets it, they can shrink and slow down all other players for 15 seconds. This can quickly become problematic for the other players as the invaders do not lose any speed and their attacks become twice as powerful.

River Survival []

472px-Plus Clock Artwork - Super Mario 3D World

+Clock.

This game mode returns since its first appearance in Super Mario Party. Four players work together to paddle their boat across a river. Once the game begins, all players keep track of what's going on in the river while under a 60 second time limit. The players have to decide on which paths to choose while going through the increasingly turbulent river. All of the Co-op minigames from Super Mario Party return as well as two new ones. To trigger these minigames, players must go through the big red balloons. The better that the players perform and work together in these minigames, the more bonus time they'll earn from them. Hazards such as boulders, turbulent waters, and sharp curves will show up more as a game progresses. Ramps and dash panels will occasionally show up which can allow the players to gain speed in their travels along the river. This increased speed could be lost, however, if the players bump into a hazard or into the side of the river. +Clocks can also appear along the river to add more time for the players.

Exclamation Point (1)

Migrant's exclamation point.

One new feature that hasn't appeared before, are Migrants. Usually one or two appear during a game of River Survival on the side of a river. Although, there are times where three have appeared during a single game. These migrants can take the appearance of a Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Hammer Bro, or Spike. Their appearance does not have an effect on what they offer. When the players are within 2000 feet of a migrant, a big exclamation point will appear over them. The players will have to make a relatively quick decision as to whether they should slow down and let the migrant come and board their boat. How much time is left on the clock and how fast the boat is going are two main factors over whether the players will let them come onboard. There is no penalty if the migrant is left behind, but if they do come onboard, the players must be extra careful on the hazards. Bumping into a boulder or losing control of the boat in rapid waters could lead to the migrant falling off. If they fall off, then the migrant will be lost. If the players manage to get to the end of the river with the migrant still onboard, they will give the players a new skin for the boat. There are 28 skins to collect in total. Once all of the skins are collected, the migrant will just give a bonus lump sum of Party Studs.

Crash Course []

This is an all-new never-before-seen main game mode in the Mario Party series. The game mode has a lot of elements from Mario Party 9, 10, and Island Tour, however, the players still move individually without the car. Every time this game mode is played, a randomly-generated one-way board is created. This one-way board is called the Course. The goal of this game is to reach the end of the course first. Players will roll a dice block to see who gets to go first for board play and then immediately go into a minigame. First place in the minigame gets to roll three 1-10 dice blocks. 2nd rolls two 1-10 dice blocks. 3rd rolls one 1-10 dice block. And finally, 4th gets to roll one 1-6 dice block. A Course generally has anywhere from 150-250 spaces which may sound like a lot, but it isn't once you account for triple dice blocks, Happening Spaces, Items, and more. Since a game of Crash Course does not have a set amount of turns, the game progresses through rounds instead. Once a game of Crash Course is completed, the Course can be saved to be played again in the future if the players so wish. They can also upload it online for others around the world to play. This downloading and uploading of Courses can enable for some really fun parties if the players want a bit more control over what their Course looks and plays like.

Boards[]

New Donk City LMP

Taken straight out of Super Mario Odyssey, New Donk City is a metropolitan-themed board filled with skyscrapers and buzzing streets. The main objective of the board is to scale to the top of New Donk City Hall to obtain the Star for 20 studs. One notable feature of the board is the option to scale the New Donk City Hall building or the nearby connected Bumpiron building. While the Bumpiron (3 floors) building is shorter in length to scale, players have to deal with rolling barrels falling down as the building is under construction. The City Hall is longer in length (4 floors), but safer as there are no rolling barrels. The board has a dynamic day/night system according to what the Nintendo Switch clock says. It also has a 60% chance of being clear and 40% chance of being rainy.

Happening Spaces

  • Elevator - Will bring a player up two floors. Every floor except the topmost ones of each building has one of this space.
  • Road Rage - A player that lands on this will lose ten studs after getting run over by an aggressive driver. This space appears near the beginning as players cross the street to enter one of the two buildings.
  • Air Vent - In the Bumpiron building, a New Donker HVAC specialist asks the player to help them fix an air vent when this space is landed on. After the task is complete, the specialist will reward the player with 10-20 studs. The second floor has this space.
  • Urban Stingby Attack! - If a player lands on this, they will get swarmed by a slew of Urban Stingbies and lose their next turn. This space appears on the first and third floors of New Donk City Hall.
  • Key to the City - At the top of New Donk City Hall a few spaces away from the Star, Pauline and the Super Mario Players are present at the happening space. If a player lands on this, she and the band will play a little jingle before she gives the player the key to the city. This will enable the player to purchase three things for free (Items, Stars, etc.).

Lucky Space

Located right before the forked path between the buildings at the beginning area, if a player lands on this then will be whisked away by the Odyssey courtesy of Cappy and Tiara. The player will then earn a free Star before having the choice of going in the New Donk City Hall or the Bumpiron building.

Sumo Bro Springs LMP (1)

A more traditional Party board based around colorful hills, calm meadows, and soaking springs. Players move across the board to get the Star that’s in a random location. Stars always cost 20 studs each, and whenever a player obtains the Star on the board, another Star warps to a different location. There are numerous different paths to take around the board, but some parts of them will be set on fire due to hovering Sumo Bros. The fires can be quenched with water if a player pays five studs upfront to continue on the path. If the player chooses not to pay or cannot pay, then they will run over to a path that isn’t on fire to the detriment or help for the player. The day/night system of the board will change as the game progresses (First Turn = Morning, Last Turn = Night).

Happening Spaces

  • Firecrackers - Two spaces on the west side of the board are home to one firecracker each. If a player lands either of the spaces, one of them will go off. If that same player or another one lands on either of the spaces again, then the second firecracker will go off and that player will earn a 50 stud bonus. Afterwards, any player that lands on either space will earn a 7-10 stud bonus.
  • Springs - Four of these spaces are located on the four corners of the board. If a player lands on one of these spaces, then they will be whisked away by the spring randomly to one of the three other spaces.
  • Boss Sumo Bro - Near the center of the map, a large Sumo Bro looms. If a player lands on the space under him, Boss Sumo Bro will judge whether he should or shouldn’t stomp out the player. If he decides towards it, the player will lose 75% of their studs. If he decides against, then the player will keep everything.

Lucky Space

Located just a few spaces away from the beginning. If a player lands on it, then a band of Koopa Paratroopas will carry them off to a lucky island where the player can get a free Star. After that, they will be carried back to the main board one space ahead of the Lucky Space.

Swampwood LMP

Largely based off of Soda Jungle from New Super Mario Bros. U, this traditional board is home to a toxic river and a dark, creepy understory that is the Swamp. Players move across the board to get the Star that’s in a random location. Stars always cost 20 studs each, and whenever a player obtains the Star on the board, another Star warps to a different location. The board is divided into four quadrants and players start at the southernmost one which is the entrance of the swamp. The western quadrant is home to ancient ruins while the northern quadrant is home to a ghost manor. On the eastern quadrant resides Kammy Koopa from Paper Mario. Players can traverse the toxic river by boat onto the different quadrants for a five stud fee to the Sailor Koopa Ferry Service. The day/night system on this board works very much like the system in Mario Party 6, every three turns day will shift to night and vice versa. When it becomes night, certain events and creatures may come out to play for better or worse. These events and creatures can also spike in potency if it rains and thunder during the night (40% chance each day/night shift). Players will also gain six studs instead of the usual three when landing on a Blue Space, however they will lose six if landing on a Red Space.

Happening Spaces

  • Ticket Giveaway - One happening space is located at the top of the south quadrant. If a player lands here, then the ferrymaster of the Sailor Koopa Ferry Service will offer the player a free ticket to go wherever quadrant they want.
  • Buried Treasure - There are two happening spaces on the right side of the western quadrant. Landing on either one of them will usually net the player a rare item.
  • Pink Boo - When it’s day, a happening space resides just in front of the ghost manor. When a player lands on it, Pink Boo will reluctantly come out and the player will have the option of stealing another player’s studs for five studs or their Star for thirty studs.
  • Kammy Koopa’s Deal - A conversation can be struck up with her if a player lands on the happening space just before her. She’ll usually strike up wild high-risk, high reward deals with the player i.e. (Asking for 2 Stars in exchange for a 1-20 Dice Block for the rest of the game, 75 studs for a chance at winning 6 Stars, etc.).

Nighttime Occurrences (Only happens at night)

  • Something Else Is In the Water… - When a player crosses the toxic river, they run the risk of being knocked into the water by a Giant Eel or Cheep Chomp. If the player falls into the river, then they will be transported back to the beginning via Lakitu and lose ten studs due to the poison of the river.
  • Mummies - There’s a chance that mummies will arise from the ancient ruins and protect their buried treasure. In this case, the Buried Treasure happening space is nullified until daytime.
  • Boo Hunt - From the ghost manor could come two Purple Boos. If these Purple Boos come out of the manor, then they will aggressively hunt down other players by rolling a Dice Block themselves and moving the corresponding spaces. If they come in contact with a player, then they will either steal the player’s items or half of their studs. These Boos can traverse the river freely without a boat and will chase players down across the quadrants until it becomes day.
  • Ztar - A rare occurrence but a Ztar can appear randomly on the board. If a player has the misfortune of running into it, then they will lose a Star (lose 20 studs if no stars are present).
  • Free Pink Boo - The Happening Space in front of the ghost manor will be replaced with a space where players can simply pass by it to activate it. Here, a player can ask a gleeful Pink Boo to steal another’s players studs for free or ask to steal a Star for the reduced price of 15 studs.

Lucky Spaces

The board is unique for having two Lucky Spaces. They are positioned in the center of the board and each player has two ferry tickets to travel to the center island at any time. A player can only stay on the island for one turn, however, before having to return to the main board. The island is inhabited by two Lucky Spaces and two Blue Spaces so it’s a good 50/50 wildcard. Landing on a Lucky Space awards a free Star.

Hotel Mario LMP

A newly erected hotel colloquially named, “Hotel Mario” is under a bidding war for ownership. There are five portions of the board, three inside and two outside, that players will bid studs for (Suites, Dining Hall, Souvenir Shop, Outdoor Luxury Pool, Luxury Amphitheater) in that order. Whichever player has the most studs towards a portion of the board will claim ownership of said portion will therefore inherit that portion of the board as an asset and gain Stars. If a player outbids another on one of these assets then they will take that player’s Stars for themselves as they now have ownership. The Suites and Souvenir Shop are worth one Star, the Dining Hall is worth two, and both the Outdoor Luxury Pool and Luxury Amphitheater are worth three Stars. Another unique feature about this board is the exclusive Happy-Angry Space. Three of these are on the board with one of them being in the Suites, another in the Souvenir Shop, and the last being at the Luxury Amphitheater. When this space is triggered, a roulette wheel will appear and the player will either summon a Lakitu that’s happy or angry or a Sun that’s happy or angry. A happy Lakitu will steal a sizable amount of studs from another player’s asset and give it to the player that summoned him. An angry Lakitu will steal a sizable amount of studs from the player that summoned him and either keep for himself or give it towards another player. A Happy Sun will make itself so hot that every player besides the one who summoned will have their next dice roll cut in half because of the sweltering temperature. An Angry Sun will come out the sky and chase the player who summoned it across the board, making that player lose some studs in the process. There is a 50/50 chance that the board will either be set during sunset or at night.

Happening Spaces

  • Sing It Out/Dance It Out - A Happening Space located right before the stage of the Luxury Amphitheater. Landing here will make the player pay an upfront fee of five studs to perform on the stage of the amphitheater. The player will either sing with a quartet of Toads or dance with Funky Kong and a trio of Ukikis. The player will be shown which buttons to press at the right time in order to break their best leg on stage. A great performance will net a player 20 studs or 2-3 free items. A bad performance will earn the player nothing but rotten tomatoes.
  • Rich Guy - Rich Guy, a golden-yellow Shy Guy that wears a red, royal robe and a small crown comes into the area. He will buy out one of the assets of the board for a usually high amount of studs. If a player previously owned that asset then they will have to outbid Rich Guy in order to get their Stars back. Five of these Happening Spaces, one for each asset of the board, appear.

Lucky Space

A Lucky Space appears midway through the Suites section of the board. Landing on the space will let the player be escorted to the Presidential Suite where a free star awaits them. After obtaining the star, the player will be transported to the entrance of the Dining Hall.

Snowglobe Madness LMP

Set inside of a kid’s toy snowglobe, this board is set to the theme of snow and holly jolly scenery. Plus, a cutesy train running around the board. Most of the board takes place inside of the castle, however players will start outside of the entrance. Certain parts of the castle are also outside for the players to traverse upon. This board has two main features. The first being that the Star will appear in one of the three towers of the castle; the left tower, central tower, or right tower. Once a player obtains a Star from one of the aforementioned towers for 20 studs, the Star WILL NOT move to another location unless triggered by a Happening Space and the player will be launched back to the start of the board. Once a player obtains a Star for 20 studs, the price will also go up to 40 studs and vice versa if the Star was already 40 studs. The second main feature is that every five turns a Shy Guy dressed up as Santa will fly above the board on a sleigh with reindeer and drop a shiny Present. The shiny Present can appear on any Blue or Red Space on the board and turn it into a Present Space. Whoever lands on the space will reap a grand reward. The board always takes place during the day and the weather is always lightly snowing. However, during the Christmas season (November 1st - January 5th) the board takes place at night with snow and abundant Christmas lights and decorations.

Present Space Rewards

  1. Studs: 30-50 stud bonus.
  2. Cannonball (item): Get a unique item only obtainable by landing on a Present Space. Run outside and pick a tower to fire a cannonball at. The tower chosen will get destroyed and any players that were in the tower will lose a Star and get shot back to the start of the board. If the Star resided within the tower that got destroyed, then it will move to one of the two remaining towers. The destroyed tower will take two turns to be rebuilt.
  3. Pick Your Present: The Santa-dressed Shy Guy will fly down on his sleigh in front of the player and give him/her the opportunity to choose one of the following rewards: 50 studs, 3 free items, or the Cannonball.
  4. Free Star: One free Star.

Happening Spaces

  • Move Over - Two Happening Spaces on the board trigger this. When a player lands on this specific space, the Star moves from one tower to another.
  • Price Amendment - The Star’s price will change from 20 studs to 40 studs or 40 to 20 depending on what the current price is. Three Happening Spaces, when landed upon, can trigger this on the board.

Lucky Space

This space is located three spaces inward the castle from the entrance. When a player lands on this, the train will pull up right outside the castle and the train conductor will call upon the player to come onboard. The player will then ride the train out toward its destination and get a free Star. Afterwards, the player will ride the train back to the castle and continue one space ahead of the Lucky Space.

Planet of the Blarggs LMP

This board is set on a small, lava-filled planet chock full of Blarggs. The setting bears slight resemblance to Battlerock Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy. The board’s unique feature is that its layout changes all the time. The first few spaces in front of the starting area will remain the same but the players will eventually enter an intricate maze of interior caverns filled with magma and Blarggs to exterior rocky, mountainous ridges. Three treasure chests inhabit this maze and once a player reaches one they can open it for 10 studs. One chest will act as a vortex and suck the player in only to spit them back out towards the starting area. Another chest will award the player 20 studs while the last chest will award the player a Star. Once the Star is obtained, a huge volcanic eruption will begin. Fortunately, all players within the maze will be able to escape through emergency pipes and return to the starting area before the whole maze gets destroyed by the eruption. Afterwards, a new maze will form with a completely unique layout from the eruption and all players will venture forth from the starting area all over again.

Happening Spaces

A random number of Happening Spaces occupy each section of the board outside of the first few spaces.

  • Blargg Ram - In the cavern sections. When a player lands on this space, a nearby Blargg will arise from the lava and ram themselves against the rock that the player is standing on. This will most likely cause the player to fall into the lava and lose half of their studs before returning to the space. However, there is the rare occasion where the player will maintain their balance and not fall into the lava.
  • Stud Shower - A meteorite shower will blanket the exterior portions of the board with studs. One stud per space.
  • Power Play - An alien will reveal himself to the player and offer them the treasure chest with the Star for 25 studs. A direct power play.

Lucky Space

Located just before the mouth of the maze. When a player lands on here a Launch Star appears right above their head and they will be whisked away to another planet resembling Honeyhive Galaxy. There, Honey Queen will award the player with a free Star before sending them back to the inside of the maze of the Planet of the Blarggs.

Goomba's Greedy Gala LMP

The fan-favorite Traditional board from Mario Party 4 returns in full remastered HD. The objective and layout of the board has not changed. Players must make sure that they manage to obtain Stars by getting to Goomba, the host of this board. The most notable feature of this board is the roulette in the very middle of it. When players pass the roulette, a Goomba asks for an optional payment of either five, ten or twenty studs. The more a player pays to the Goomba, the more likely it is that the ball will land on the route closest to the Star. Another notable feature of this board is the dice areas. When a player passes a dice area, a Goomba appears, rolls a number on a Dice Block, and the player has to beat that number by rolling a number higher than his.

Happening Spaces

Poker Chip Slide - Five Happening Spaces at the top of the board perform this event. Two on the left side and three on the right. If a player lands on the left side, then they will slide across to the other side of the board on a poker chip while collecting studs. Vice versa if the player is on the right side of the board.

Cardstock Carnival LMP

This is a board that was added in a content update in promotion for the upcoming game, LEGO Mario Party 2. It is a fairly large Traditional board that is significantly based off of Cardstock Carnival from Yoshi's Crafted World. Players move across the board to get the Star that’s in a random location. Stars always cost 20 studs each, and whenever a player obtains the Star on the board, another Star warps to a different location. Every so often, a Winged Cloud will appear on the board. Whichever player reaches it first will acquire a task to complete within a set amount of turns (win the next minigame, travel x amount of spaces, etc.). The Winged Cloud will follow that player around until he/she either completes it or they fail to do it in time. Success will net the player a lump sum of studs, a goodies bag of Items, or even in rare cases, a Star. Failure will make the Winged Cloud evaporate leaving the player with nothing. The board has a 50/50 chance of being day or night.

Happening Spaces

  • Egg Blocks - One Happening Space at the bottom-left and right of the board trigger this event. A player will be able to hit an Egg Block three times to dispense Yoshi Eggs. Each egg usually contains three studs, but an Item may pop out occasionally.
  • Pick A Card - One Happening Space at the top-left and right of the board trigger this event. A Toadie will come out of a carnival hut and usher the player to pick one of two cards. One card will give the player a Rainbow Star while the other will cause the player to fork over 7 studs to the Toadie.
  • Festive Clown Car - At the top of the board is where this Happening Space lies. If a player lands here, they'll be to enter a Clown Car and strafe run the board. A total of 10 cannonballs, made out to look like confetti balls, are shot at random spaces on the board. If a player gets hit by one of the cannonballs, they can lose up to 20 studs depending on their position. After the event, the player riding the Clown Car has the option of landing at the start of the board or back at the original Happening Space.
  • In-N-Out - The player will be asked by a Toad if they want to throw in one of their Items for another Item or for 10-15 studs. Two of these Happening Spaces reside at the center of the board.

Lucky Space

Located in the bottom-right section of the board which is quite far away from the players' starting position. It is also notable for being the only Lucky Space in the game where the player doesn't earn a free Star. Instead, when a player lands on it, they'll be taken up by Fly Guys and brought to the Fly Guy Carnival Buffet. Here, a player can choose one of three entrées: Tanti Soldi which is 50 free studs. Balanced which is 25 free studs and two free Items. Recherché which gives the player a 35% increase of likelihood to find Rare Items on Item Spaces and Shops for the next 10 turns.

After indulging in one of the entrées, the Fly Guys will take the player back to the start of the board.

MPCMarioEmblem Character Space This is a space that was set down by a player using an Item. Depending on what Item was used, the space can either be triggered by landing on it or passing through it.

Items[]

In LEGO Mario Party, the main two ways a player can get an item are either getting them for free through an Item Space or purchasing them with studs at a Shop. Depending on what it is, items could be used on the players themselves or thrown on the board ten spaces ahead or behind on any Blue or Red Space.

Self Items[]

These items are used on the players themselves.

Image Item Description
Super Mushroom LMP Super Mushroom The player will be able to roll two Dice Blocks. Should the numbers match (e.g., two fives), the player will get 10 studs (30 studs for two "7's").
Fire Flower LMP Fire Flower The player will roll a Dice Block and then become a “Fire” version of themselves. Any opponent that is three spaces ahead of the player will get engulfed by a thrown fireball and lose ten studs.
Rainbow Star LMP Rainbow Star When this Item is used, the player will become invincible to any hazards from both the board and other players.
Pipe LMP Pipe When used, warps the player to another random player’s position.
Flutter LMP Flutter Takes the player to the Star when used.
Dueling Glove LMP Dueling Glove The player will be able to choose an opponent to duel for studs, Stars, or Items.

Space Items[]

These items take effect when an opponent lands on it. The player who lands on it still has the effects of a Blue or Red Space. The item disappears from the board after being activated.

Image Item Description
Poison LMP Poison Mushroom When a player is affected by this Item, the affected player will only be able to roll numbers one to five on the Dice Block.
Greedy Goomba LMP Greedy Goomba When a player is affected by this Item, the affected player who lands on it hits a Dice Block that determines how many studs they give to the space owner.
Warp Box LMP Warp Box The affected player will get sucked into a Warp Box and reappear at a random location on the board to the help or detriment of the affected player.
Spiky Piranha Plant LMP Spiky Piranha Plant The affected player will get eaten by the hungry plant and then spat back out, causing the affected player to lose half of their studs.
Freezie LMP Freezie The affected player will get frozen and lose their next turn.
Peepa LMP Peepa Affected player will lose one stud for every space they move after landing on this space by a hovering Peepa that follows them for their next turn. The studs will go towards the space owner.

Spiny Shell LMP Blue Spiny Shell The infamous shell will fly in and bombard itself against the affected player causing them to lose twenty studs towards the player who set it down.
Toady LMP Toady Transforms two of the affected player’s Character Spaces into their opponent’s who set down the Toady space.

Passing Items[]

These items take effect whenever a player simply passes their space on a board. They disappear after being activated.

Image Item Description
Nabbit LMP Nabbit The nefarious thief steals 10 studs from a passing opponent.
Bob Omb LMP Bob-Omb A foe that passes by this will have a Bob-Omb drop into their hands. A roulette wheel will appear over their head with 75% in the green and 25% in the red. If the arrow lands on the green then the Bob-Omb will defuse and walk away from the player. If it lands on the red, then it will explode and cause the foe to lose 75% of their studs.
Thwomp LMP Thwomp Stops an opponent right in their tracks and ends their turn.

Rare Items[]

These are items that rarely ever appear out from an Item Space or Shop. Players in last place have a slightly better chance of attaining these items, however, they are still uncommon.

Image Item Description
Mega Mushroom LMP Mega Mushroom The player will be able to roll three Dice Blocks. Should the numbers match (e.g., three tens), and the player will get 30 or 50 studs (100 studs for three "7's"). In addition, the player will grow to giant size and be able to stomp out opponents. A stomped opponent will lose 15 studs. This mushroom can also make the player temporarily immune to an opponent’s item as well as trigger special events on certain boards. (Ex. Causing the caverns to cave in and crushing opposing players on Planet of the Blarggs.)
Double Cherry LMP Double Cherry When the player comes up to a crossroad, this item will activate automatically and allow the player to travel down both paths at the same time via a clone with whatever number is left on the dice block roll. After the original and the clone reach their destination, the player can choose either one for the effective space. (i.e. A player landing on a DK Space for one path and a Bowser Space on another and the player decides to choose the original who landed on the DK Space; the clone who landed on the Bowser Space will be discarded and disappear which will leave that space not triggered while the DK Space is triggered.)
Star Rod LMP Star Rod Upon using this item, a Chance Time will occur where Stars and studs could be gained, lost, or transferred between players.
Power Moon LMP Power Moon Having three of these in inventory will cause them to self-activate and then give all the Stars of the player in first place to the player in last place.

Minigames[]

LEGO Mario Party has a total of 75 minigames, including the River Survival minigames, DK minigames, and Bowser minigames. As always, minigame titles are often word plays, alliterations, idioms and assonance.

8-Player Mode[]

8-Player Mode makes a return appearance from Mario Party 7 and it largely functions the same in this game. However, the main difference is that players now have the option of either sharing the four controllers or using the single-piece Joy-Cons so each player can play with their own controller. If 8-Player Mode is chosen in Party mode, then the eight players will be divided into four teams of two. At the beginning of each turn during board play, the game will ask which character will make the decisions for that turn (buying and using Items, getting Stars, etc.) and the players can decide that. Both players of each team will contribute to hitting the Dice Block each turn, though, and they will travel together. Certain minigames will also be remodeled to fit eight players instead of just picking one person from the team to participate.

Costume Shop[]

The Costume Shop is a semi-hidden feature of the game that can be found by pressing the transparent ? Block in the bottom-left hand corner of the main menu. Once pressed, the user will be taken to the Costume Shop where they can trade the Party Studs that they've earned from completing Parties, Tournaments, Minigames, and more, for costumes.

Costume Shop

Costume Shop menu.

The Costume Shop menu will show the featured costume of the day that can be readily purchased and more costumes to choose from if the user so wishes as seen in the image. Costume prices can range anywhere from 1,000 Party Studs to 50,000. Once a costume is bought for a certain character, that character can then wear it in any other game mode. The user can suit up with Luigi's Poltergust G-00 heading into an online Tournament or maybe they could dress up as Cat Peach to get down on some Minigame nummies.

All costumes are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay.

Trivia[]

  • Koji Kondo helped compose the themes for the Party boards.
  • The last time that costumes were significantly featured in a Mario Party game was Mario Party 2.
    • The Costume Shop was very close to being a method to get microtransactions from players during game development.
