The Gold Shell is an item that first appeared in both Super Mario Galaxy games. In those games, it's functionally the same as the Green Shell, but it's much rarer. Its main purpose is to open special chests that only it can open. When used underwater, the headlight on the shell also has the power to kill Boos.
Fanon appearances[]
Mario Kart: Ancient Circuit[]
Gold Shells appears in this game as a rare item, available to 5th place and up by default since DLC Pack 3, but most likely to appear in 3rd. Here, it's an enhanced version of the Green Shell that explodes on opponents. However, you must be very careful when shell-sniping opponents, as that explosion could hurt you, too!
Triple Gold Shells also appear in this game, to racers in 2nd through 6th by default, with 4th place being most likely to get them. As with all triple items, they rotate around you, forming a protective barrier. However, this item is extremely risky to use for protection purposes due to their explosive nature.
Mario Kart Insanity[]
In Mario Kart Insanity, it acts like a Black Shell, but instead of travelling in a straight line like a Green Shell would, it targets the nearest opponent ahead of the user like a Red Shell would.
Mario Kart: Turbo Circuit[]
It appears a Koopa Troopa's special item in Mario Kart: Turbo Circuit. It worked like a Green Shell, only it could hit three players before breaking. The image ranges from 12th to 7th, and can only be received by Koopa Troopa.
