Friendo Fly is a 2002 3D platformer produced by RBUX Games. It originally released on the XBOX and BuxBox, but later ported to the GameCube and future Nintendo-RBUX consoles. The game was created to replicate the popular collectathon and platformer formula, and met wide-reception in the US and Europe, leading to the production and publication of it's sequel, Friendo Fly 2: Frost Flight in 2004.
PLOT[]
In a post-apocalyptic world, Earth has shattered into thousands of skyborne islands that orbit its partially artificial "core," which acts as the planet's pseudo-sun. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Earth have mutated and evolved into bizarre creatures—ranging from living clouds to orcs and even sentient crabs. Over several centuries, the hierarchy of the world has shifted dramatically, with the residents of the islands dividing into villages, kingdoms, militias, and more.
Due to the lack of proper governmental powers, the isles have descended into anarchy, with various factions struggling for dominance over the many civilizations. One of these factions is the StormBrood, an "empire" of sentient clouds led by Lord Storm and his right-hand man, General Thunder, who seek to unite the many islands under their rule. However, the StormBrood's previous leader, Havoc, was defeated by the mighty King of the Flies, Buzzdy. Havoc was banished far from Earth to an unknown land, leaving the faction in the hands of his son, Lord Storm. This banishment fuelled Lord Storm’s resentment for the flies, and several years later, he gathered his army and prepared to take over the Earth.
Using a specially crafted machine developed with his scientists, Lord Storm launched an attack on the home of the Flies, Fleedeedoo, and magnetically pulled it out of orbit to his lair. During the initial attack, however, one fly managed to escape - Friendo. In the panic, Friendo lost his balance and fell far, far away from Fleedeedoo. Hours later, he awoke in the middle of a kingdom known as the Slime Kingdom. Knowing his brethren were in danger, he quickly took action, deciding to stop Lord Storm and save his fellow flies - and, unbeknownst to him, the world. However, the task would not be easy, as Lord Storm had already stationed many of his minions across the isles to suppress any resistance. So, as he ventures to Lord Storm's lair, he must train, collect useful items and make allies to assist in his grand mission.
MECHANICS[]
The mechanics of Friendo Fly are quite similar to other platformer mechanics from the time.
Flying is a core mechanic in Friendo Fly, and is accessible by double-tapping 🅐. It allows you to traverse easier, reach hidden areas and collect special items. You are able to fly around via the joystick, and land by double-tapping 🅐 again, but if you land while very high up in the air, you will take damage upon impact with the ground. | |
---|---|
Smack is another core mechanic of Friendo Fly. It acts as a close-range attack, and is accessible by pressing 🅧. Holding down 🅧 allows you to charge up the smack, increasing both the damage of the attack, and the distance enemies are knocked back. However, when charging, a window is left open for enemies to attack you without you being able to defend yourself. | |
Charge is the fourth, and final core attack. It simply allows you to boost damage of an attack, or can lengthen the amount of time you stay in the air while flying, along with increasing flying speed. Pretty useful, eh? | |
HP isn't REALLY an Average Attack, but is still pretty crucial to the games structure and battling system. When you begin in World 1, you only have 25 HP, which can take 5 hits from the strongest enemy there if you just stand there. However, as you progress, you can earn HP tokens, which allow you to increase HP. Some ways to earn HP Tokens are through the shady shop beneath the Lava Temple, in which you can also gain a gem! At the end of the game you should have 100 HP. Oh, yeah, and if you die with 25 HP, you will be sent back to the beginning of the level, with your progress saved, but if you die 3 times, you will have to recollect all your coins. If you have already completed the World, you won't lose your progress, don't worry. |
Next up one the attack genre, we have the UNLOCKABLE ATTACKS! These attacks are earned through completing a specific world (only through defeating the boss, just so there isn't a bunch of grinding involved to get all the collectibles), and usually have a theme relating to the world it is earned from.
The first unlockable attack in Friendo Fly is Speed Fly, which isn't so much an attack, but more of an alternative to the boost. However, it actually makes you fly at a higher pace than the average attack, which proves it much more useful. It is also helpful for trying to collect airborne gems, especially when the airborne gem challenges are timed. | |
---|---|
Next up we have W2's fly beam, which gives an incredibly useful ranged attack, that helps when you don't feel like going up really close to beat up your enemies. It even can reflect off mirrors that appear around several world's, such as Tribal Takeaway, or even just W2 itself. | |
After Fly Beam we have Hot Pepper, which is unlocked through beating W3! This is the first attack to have an effect on enemies, with it having a chance of setting the opponent aflame, slowly chipping away their HP. This can also make you go much faster, because, well.. logic. | |
In W4 you unlock you get the ULTRA CHARGE! Sounds ultra, huh? Well, you were RIGHT, because it sure is ultra, fast, and makes your enemies furious! Whenever using this, you can storm through hordes of enemies, knocking them aside, which can stun them! Not only that, but it can also literally make you DRIFT when flying! For sure this is ultra! | |
In W5 we have the infamous Enlarge, which appears in basically every friendo fly game, because it is just so useful! It allows you to destroy objects in your path, roll around like a fat hamster (which you can't lie is pretty adorable), and shatter mirrors for fun. However, it has its downsides, with it making you not able to fly, because generally, that is realistic. | |
In the final world you can earn your first Junko's Craft item! This attack is the Thunder Arms, which allows you to set things on fire, along with shooting thunder at enemies! This is accessible through the Junko's Crafts tab. | |
Finally, the last unlockable attack you earn is the Fly Mech 1000, which makes you able to set things on fire, shoot lightning, charge AND fly. It is also a Junko's Crafts item, being nicknamed 'the holy grail of attacks' by fans. |
Finally, we have Junko's Crafts! These are accessible through the Junko's Crafts TAB, which is only unlockable after completing W2 fully (includes gems, coins, campaign etc.) To earn these you need to do short quests for Junko (with most of them being collecting items).
The first proper Junko Craft is Junko's Raft, which allows you to easily complete the time trial in Futuristic Falls, and just traverse it. To earn this you must do the following: Collect 10 golden seashells around Futuristic Falls, then bring them back to Junko. | |
---|---|
The second proper Junko Craft is Shadow Juice, which allows you to camouflage, making enemies unable to see you, detect you, or attack you. To earn this you must do the following: Defeat a tribal mage, and keep defeating them until one drops a special item named the Shadow Berry. Once you get it, bring it to the volcano in Tribal Takeaway, and drop it into a cauldron, until a small bottle of liquid drops out of it. Next, take the bottle of shadow berry liquid to Junko, who will turn it into pure shadow juice. | |
The last proper Junko Craft is Mini-Junko, who is used to crawl through small spaces to earn gems/press switches. To earn this, just simply defeat Dazed Party Slime, and then ask it whether it has any cuddly teddies. He will say 'Yeah, of course I do!' and will give you a teddy bear. Bring it to Junko, and he'll give you a mini-junko in return. Cute, right? |
MAIN CHARACTERS[]
Friendo is the main character and protagonist of the Friendo Fly franchise, who's goal is to rescue his family and island from the clutches of the mighty Lord Storm. With his trusty wings, and super bravery, he's sure to defeat any menace who gets in his way! | |
---|---|
Lord Storm is the main villain and antagonist of the first Friendo Fly game, who rules over the forbidden Stormy Heights, and bids to take over Cloud City, and the surrounding islands to become the ultimate leader of the land. | |
King Slime is the first main NPC you meet on your journey, first appearing in Slime Kingdom, World 1. In that world you assist him by stopping his rogue general, and his army of evil slime's in order to bring peace to the land, and to get his lost sword. After you help him, he'll give you the scroll that legally allows you to use the Ultra Zip Line Teleporter 3000, and of course, a new move, Speed Fly. He also gives you a gem. | |
Junko is the second main NPC, and one of Friendo's most loyal and frequent-helping friend. You first meet him in Junk Dropoff, his Junkyard/Gas Station/ Mechanics Workshop or World 2, where he assists you in your journey, by helping you get rid of Mutation, the beast who had been terrorising Junk Dropoff using its army of robot-spiders and blocking the path for the zipline. After helping defeat Mutation, and repairing Junko, who had been a bit broken when you meet him, he'd help fix your zipline using a spair cog, and would help it go to the next world, by giving it a bit of a boost. The move Junko gifts you is the Fly-Beam. | |
The Flame King is the third main NPC in Friendo Fly, being the ruler of the paradise easter-island inspired Tribal Takeaway, or World 3. In the first game he is portrayed as a foolish and incompetent leader, with an inability to keep the volcano in the middle of his Kingdom dormant, due to his incredibly uncontrollable powers. Because of these traits, he gets kidnapped by the Flame Golem, world 3's boss, who creates a sci-fi apocalyptic paradise hell out of Tribal Takeaway.. Friendo Fly of course frees The Flame King, who helps Friendo get on with his journey. | |
The Little Orc Leader is the fourth main NPC in Friendo Fly, who is the leader of a pack of Orcs, who happened to be kidnapped by the Sky Crabs, and taken to Cloud City, World 5, where they created a large prison. The Little Orc Leader attempted to battle the Crabs, managing to even battle the notorious Capn. Slime Icky Beard The 3rd, but lost against him, and was later locked up. Friendo Fly later arrived only about 5 hours later where he brawled the Sky Crabs, stopped Capn. Slime Beards escape, and freed The Little Orc Leader and his pack of Orcs. | |
General Thunder is the fifth main NPC in Friendo Fly, and the first main evil NPC in the game who isn't a boss. General Thunder is basically Lord Storms right hand man, and the cloud who set up the operation to attack Cloud City. He's pretty cruel, and should've deserved a boss fight, BUT, some people who were stripping away the games code, and searching the files of the game discovered an unused file named 'General Thunder Lunge' and another called 'General Thunder HP'. They also happened to find an unused voiceline of General Thunder where he rats on about Lord Storms greatness, and how he'll be so happy that he'd beat Friendo to a pulp.. People also found a strange General Thunder icon which most of the community think is the icon which sits next to the HP bar. |
WORLDS[]
WORLD 1 SLIME KINGDOM[]
The first world you encounter in Friendo Fly happens to be a lush land of green trees, and thick bushes. The Slime Kingdom is separated into two sections, the wild side, where the evil slimes lie, and the other half is the royal side, where your quest may begin.. In this land you unlock 'Speed Fly.'
WORLD 2 JUNK DROPOFF[]
The second world of Friendo Fly is begun with a bang, due to the broken zipline. Luckily, you end up in a junkyard, where a massive robot named Junko helps you stop the threat of Robot Spiders on the island, which disturb the land. This island is split into 2 islands.. One is the hotel area, where a tipping tower sits, and the other being the main junkyard, filled with trash. In this world you unlock 'Fly-Beam.'
WORLD 3 TRIBAL TAKEAWAY[]
The third world happens to be a Paradise, which had been converted into chaos due to the Flame Kings kidnapping by the evil Flame Golem. This land has lots of islands, filled with palm trees, flowing rivers, coconuts and rampaging robot easter island heads. In the center lies a dormant volcano-temple, where the evil golem lies.. In the temple there are traps, ghosts and puzzles! In this world you unlock the 'Hot Pepper'.
WORLD 4 FUTURISTIC FALLS[]
The fourth world in Friendo Fly is the once beautiful, crystal clear ocean islands of Flowing Falls, which had been converted into a polluted land of hungry, disturbed beasts. Here you must stop the Unidentified Flies Of Evil which were used to slander the Flies. You must also defeat the mutated Fishuin beast. In this world you unlock 'Ultra Charge.'
WORLD 5 CLOUD CITY[]
The second to last world is World 5, Cloud City, which had been converted into a prison for the Little Orcs, and a place for the Sky Crabs to feast on.. It is a land of clouds, and destroyed buildings separated into several clouds.. Here you must stop an evil escape plot.. You unlock the 'Enlarge'.
WORLD 6 STORMY HEIGHTS[]
In the final world, Stormy Heights, a land of thunder, lightning, trapped flies and cursed goons, you must battle Lord Storm, who is certain he will destroy you. Here you unlock 'Thunder Arms' and the 'Sword Of Buzzdy.'

BOSSES[]
|
“You dare challenge the NEW ruler of the Slime Kingdom?” Capn. Evil Slime is the first boss in Friendo Fly. He appears in World 1, Slime Kingdom, as a rogue general of King Slime, who's army of evil slimes and him had been corrupted by Lord Storm's Ultra Gem. His boss fight is pretty simple. He stands on a pillar in the middle of the arena, where he shoots goo at you, which can slow you down, sends hoards of Evil Slime's at you, and jumps around the arena, dropping large boulders onto you. He has 3 bars full of HP meaning you must attack him exactly 3 times, to defeat him. At the end of the boss battle, his platform collapses, causing him to fall into the water below.. |
---|---|
|
“BLAARGH-! ROOOOAGH! RAAAAAAA-!” Mutation is the second boss of Friendo Fly. It appears in World 2, Junk Dropoff, where it destroys and terrorises the land using its Robot-Spiders. In it's boss battle, you must fly around below the islands, chasing after Mutation, while shooting Robot Spiders that jump at you, spamming buttons to make them fall off your small little pod, dodging obstacles such as webs, flying goop, and trash balls. To defeat it, you need to perfectly time shooting rockets at it when it stops for a breather. This beast has 5 bars of HP. At the end of the boss, it falls off the island, crashing down into space. |
|
“King mine! King yummy! Fly will be side dish! Yes, side dish! I love extra!” The Flame Golem is the third boss of Friendo Fly. It appears in World 3, Tribal Takeaway, where it kidnapped The Flame King. During your fight against it, it runs around, where it drops stalactites and rock onto you, shoots beams of fire at you, and attacks you brutally. It also can manipulate its axe hand into other objects, making it more difficult. This boss has only 2 bars of HP due to the amount of time it takes to damage one bar. At the end of the battle it explodes into hundreds of pieces, becoming simply a statue in its place, while the spirit inside flees.. |
|
“Blub, blub! [TARGET IMMINENT]! Blub, BLUUUB! [Prepare for doom!]” Fishguin is the fourth boss of Friendo Fly, and is probably one of the harder ones.. It appears in World 4, Futuristic Falls, where it had been mutated into a massive beast designed to stop Friendo before he gets to Cloud City. Fishguin has many attacks, such as shooting barrels of nuclear waste at you, which can slowly chip away HP, shooting massive lasers at you, destroying the platforms you stand on making you nearly drown, and sending sharks and fishes at you. This boss has 5 HP bars. At the end of the boss, it turns bright white, and it explodes, turning into a penguin and a school of fish.. The technology, meanwhile, simply electrocutes and blows. |
|
“Yargh! You shall die by my blade, matey!” Capn. Icky Beard is the fifth boss of Friendo Fly, appearing in Cloud City, World 5. This boss is one of the easier ones, being LITERALLY a chase battle, similar to the Evil Crash battle in Crash Bandicoot Twinsanity. Instead of the beast chasing Neo like in Twinsanity, you instead have to run alongside Capn. Icky Beard, pressing buttons to make him slow down, and to damage him. He has 6 bars of HP. At the end, he misses his ship, and confused of what to do, jumps off the island, where he later crashes on another island.. Meanwhile, at the VERY end of the boss, Friendo must do a round of attacking, and brawl a bunch of pirate goons. |
“You little weed! I'm too prideful to be jealous of such things..idiot.” The final boss of the game is Lord Storm, but there is 2 phases to this battle.. This battle happens in Stormy Heights, World 6, which is the prison for all the Flies. In the first phase, Lord Storm simply shoots lightning bolts at you, chucks his electric sword at you, and sends minions at you.. This first half has 4 bars of HP. In the second half he possesses the power of the Ultra Gem, becoming Ultra Lord Storm. During this half, he fires multiple beams of lightning at a time, sends enemies at you, slashes you twice with his swords, tips the arena side to side, drops shadow bombs, and spins the arena round and round.. At the end, after you destroy the second halfs HP (4 bars.) he'll explode, shooting the ultra gem out of his hands, and onto the arena. He'll then drop from the sky, shouting 'I WILL TAKE MY REVEEEENGEEEEE-' and then, drops into space... At the end of the boss, you earn the Ultra Gem, plus Buzzdy's precious sword. |
ENEMIES[]
Name | HP | Description | Damage per hit |
---|---|---|---|
Evil Slime | 2 | The most basic, simplest and weakest of the slimes. It hops around in an attempt to punch you, but usually fails. | 1 |
Evil Slime Brute | 8 | Big and nasty. It hops around with it's massive bat trying to clobber you with it. Just don't get hit! | 4 |
Evil Slime Archer | 4 | This slime is actually quite quick, but is easy to take out. It's firing accuracy is decent, and the damage is weak at most. | 2 |
Wolven Hound | 5 | This larger, more aggressive wolf lies in the woods of Slime Kingdom.. It's quick, yet weak. It's attacks are hard to dodge, and quite annoying. | 2 |
Wolven Beast | 9 | The nicknamed ' Mama Wolf ' is a giant, ragged and violent wolf that lies in the darkest depths of the woods. It's attacks are slow, but it's movement is stealthy. | 5 |
Stunkish | 4 | Essentially just a big skunk. It's slow yet it's attacks are poisonous and hurt A LOT. Chances are, it'll blind you! | 3 |
Snowy Slime | 4 | Weak and slow. It slowly takes damage overtime once it appears, and will burrow beneath the ground if it takes too much damage through freezing. It's only main attack is chucking snowballs. | 3 |
Viking Slime | 7 | Aggressive, slow and strong. It's able to launch axes from far distances, and can rip you to shreds if it gets too close. | 4 |
Cave Slime | 1 | This slime is just awful. The damp conditions and terrible hygiene of the caves has turned these slimes to skin and bones. They're slow and take ages to hit you. It's better if you just spare them. | 1 |
Lurking Slime | 3 | A slime which lies too in the caves beneath the Slime Kingdom. Despite the terrible conditions, this slime has managed to stay decently healthy. It likes to sneak up behind you, and punch you before running back to the shadows. | 3 |
Dazed Party Slime | 15 | UH OH! The happy, go-lucky Party Slime who resides in the caves has been suddenly corrupted by a trick gift! Make sure you avoid this once happy Slime's explosive presents, and sharp ribbon slashes! | 4 ( explosive presents ) 2 ( ribbon slashes ) |
Tree Golem | 15 | Once happily rested in the forests, this nature beast has been awoken by the presence of evil.. unfortunately it doesn't realise YOU are not the evil. It'll try to crush you, slash you with it's branch blades, shoot you down with flaming leaves, and launch you away with it's ear piercing roars.. ouch. | 3 ( branch blades ) 5 ( crushed ) 2 ( flaming leaf ) 6 ( roar ) |
TIME TRIALS[]
In Friendo Fly time trials are A LITTLE different than you'd think.. Instead of speedrunning an island, instead, you must race a character across the map to the area of the boss fight of that area.. Each area has a separate Racer, each unique to the area.. If you beat a racer, they'll give you their 'Time Relic' which act as little trophies.. If you collect them all you'll get the ultimate relic.
The W1 racer, Daddy Bodster, who gives the EZ RELIC if he is beaten. | |
---|---|
The W2 racer, Cardspeed, who gives the CARD RELIC if he is beaten. | |
The W3 racer, Ooga Chaka Gaga, who gives the VOLCANO RELIC if he is beaten. | |
The W4 racer, Slippery Wins, who gives the BUBBLE RELIC if he is beaten. | |
The W5 racer, CloudyMcRollyFeet, who gives the CLOUD RELIC if he is beaten. |
After collecting all 5 relics, you'll be able to unlock a secret area and cutscene to the game.. To get them, you need to head to the island staircase at the end of the game where the ending cutscene usually plays, BUT, if you have all 5 relics, and walk up to it.. a new cutscene shall play.
The relics will merge, exploding in light.. The Ultimate Relic, (or shimmer) appears.. It's essentially a small, yellow star. It nods at Friendo, and zooms into the rocket boosters on the bottom the island.. It'll then activate, rattling..
'CHOO CHOO! All aboard on the Friendo Express!!'
A short loading cutscene where the island floats across the sky plays, and eventually, you'll end up in Fleedeedoo, where you can explore the place, collect some more gems, and talk to the residents!
CURRENCIES/COLLECTIBLES[]
The gem is a collectible from Friendo Fly that appears in every single world. There are usually 7 per world, with each one needing a certain objective to be completed to be earned! For example: using the cannon in slime kingdom. These are quite important to the franchise, usually appearing in every game. | |
---|---|
The Airborne Gem is a collectible from Friendo Fly that appears often in the worlds. There are usually about 3 per world, with each one needing to be collected using flying, or doing an obstacle course to a high area of the world. For example: flying through several rings in a certain time limit. | |
The coin is a collectible from Friendo Fly that appears in most worlds. There are about 100 per world, and are used.. for completion. Most of them don't even have a purpose. They are used in several gem shops around the game, though. | |
Trophies are collectibles that are exclusive to game consoles that have achievements. If you collect a trophy, you'll earn an achievement. Simple enough. | |
HP Tokens are green, coin-like collectibles which are used to increase the amount of HP you have (the max being 100.) |
