Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Game Cube Controller
Super Smash Bros. Torrent is the newest and 6th installment of the Super Smash Bros. series and the second to be released for the Nintendo Switch, meaning it is the first game in the series to be released on the same console of its predecessor. It is being developed by Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco.
Super Smash Bros. Torrent takes inspiration from it's previous entry, keeping most controls. The pacing of battles is slightly increased, but still not as fast as Super Smash Bros Melee's. Many mechanics return from Ultimate's, including footstools, short hop aerial attacks, perfect shields, increased damage in one on one fights, etc. Some mechanics, however, have been cut, which include continuous locks, penalized rolling and sidestepping, and weakened pummels.
As with all other entries, the primary goal is to attack and damage opponents to increase their damage percentage. With a high percentage, sending players flying across the stage becomes both easier and faster. If a player manages to knock an other off the stage, they are given a score which will determine the winner at the end.
Basic moves can be performed by the player using either 'A' in the air or on land, while special moves are performed using 'B'. Variations of these attacks can be done by pressing the buttons while tilting the right stick, with a different move being used depending on the direction of the tilt. Players can use their shield to block almost all attacks by using 'L'. The shield shrinks through being hit, and if it is too small, it breaks. This briefly stuns the player. They can also dodge by tilting the right stick either down or sideways while shielding.
Players can grab using 'R'. Once they have grabbed, they can perform a pummel by using 'A', or throw by tilting the right stick. Players can break free of grabs by mashing buttons, but if their damage percentage is high, it becomes harder to do so.
The Final Smash is another returning feature. A rainbow colored orb with an off center cross embedded into it, known as the Smash Ball, has a chance to float across the screen. If it is hit enough, it will break. The player who has broken it is surrounded in a multicolored aura, and pressing 'B' in this state allows them to perform the previously mentioned Final Smash, a super move of sorts which deals a great amount of damage to whoever it hits. Final Smash Meters return from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where players gradually build up their Final Smashes over time through dealing and taking damage, before unleashing a weaker Final Smash.
Online play's accessibility has been increased drastically, with ranks becoming introduced throughout the modes, allowing newcomers to not be easily outmached and instead paired against equals.
Playable Characters[]
(Before we continue, I wanted to thank Arend for letting me use his awesome SSBZBox template for this project, and Mirai Moon for helping fix the issues there were with page links and logos! They've both been huge helps. You should check their work out!)
Default Characters[]
Mario
If fighters were to come in flavours, Mario would be vanilla. Simple, but a classic. This time around, though, Mario has brought along a friend!
Donkey Kong
Though a bit on the slow side, Donkey Kong makes up for it through brute strength and great charisma. Just look at that grin!
Link
With an impressive arsenal of swords, bombs and arrows, Link doesn't have a need to talk. His actions in battle speak volumes already.
Samus
An intergalactic bounty hunter with a grand reputation. Her power suit may limit her agility, but who needs speed with an arm cannon? Not to mention her signature Screw attack.
Yoshi
The only thing that can match Yoshi's hunger for battle is his actual hunger! Luckily, there's a way around that by simply swallowing his opponents and turning them out as eggs!
Kirby
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, and Kirby takes that literally! He can copy foes abilities by inhaling them, and it's hard to get away, too! He's surprisingly quick.
Fox
The leader of the famous Star Fox team, Fox is not only an ace pilot, but an agile fighter with incredible technology in hand. Some say he relies on his equipment though. Specifically his laser blaster and reflector.
Pikachu
'Aw, I could just pinch those cheeks!', is what you're probably thinking, right? Well, here's a heads up, don't. Pikachu are prone to dislike being touched, and they won't hesitate to shock you in return!
Peach
Tired of being kidnapped, Princess Peach Toadstool decided to train herself vigorously, and now she's here to test her abilities. She's got more than a few tricks up her dress! Using her new move, Rage, which surrounds her in fire!
Bowser
The feared king of the Koopas! With his powerful firebreath and great strength, the only thing that could stop Bowser is Mario, who, sadly, has more than a few times. However, this has never deterred him.
Zelda
With the power of the Triforce of Wisdom on her side, Zelda is a powerful magic user who prefers to take the ranged approach. Some say she's nothing without her alternate ego, but I bet they wouldn't say that to her face!
Ice Climbers
Two unyielding mountain climbers with the ability to control ice. Though it's not sure what their relationship is, they are as close as can be, and well, I know the power of friendship is cheesy, but in this case, it's true!
Marth
King of Atlea and wielder of the Falchion Sword. Marth is a quick and graceful fighter who makes up for the strength his slashes lack with the speed of his strikes. He's not much of an aerial fighter.
Mr. Game & Watch
Mr. Game & Watch is a strange character, to put it lightly. His moves are all references to Game & Watch minigames, and his body is entirely 2 dimensional! He's definitely quite the oddball.
Pit
The Goddess of Light's loyal right hand man. His signature weapon, the Palutena Bow, can be split up into two short blades, allowing Pit to change his approach to battle. His ability to fly is limited.
Wario
Mario's greedy rival! With a surplus of wacky attacks and abilities, Wario is actually quite the balanced fighter. His ranged attacks are lacking, but his surprising agility makes up for that. Make sure you don't get caught in his mouth, it reeks of garlic!
Ike
The legendary Radiant Hero and leader of the Greil mercenaries! His blade, the heavy Ragnell, may limit his mobility, but it can mean an early knockout if it hits. It can also ignite itself in flames and erupt pillars of fire by stabbing the ground.
Pokemon Trainer
Despite his young age, this Pokemon Trainer is a recognized battler in his home region. Now, he's brought his skills to Smash! With a trio of elemental monsters; using powers of fire, water and grass, he's got a balanced team that's hard to beat.
Diddy Kong
Donkey Kong's little nephew. His peanut popgun can fire in spurts, and he can fly real high with his jetpack on. He's incredibly acrobatic, allowing him to bounce around the stage easily. You should watch out for his slippery banana peels.
Lucas
A young boy from Tazmily Village who went through tragedy after tragedy on his journey to save the world from chaos, but this has only strengthened him. He has telekinetic powers, and specialises in projectile psychic attacks and healing.
King Dedede
I didn't know penguins could fly! King Dedede is truly a unique and powerful fighter, with a mighty mallet that he's had for years. He may be a bit of a glutton, but he's helped save his planet, and galaxy, from destruction more than a few times!
Olimar
A pilot and space captain of the planet Hocotate. He's saved his company from economic depression twice thanks to the help of his tiny alien pals, the Pikmin! They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with different attributes as well.
Villager
Mayor of Smashville and one of the youngest leaders in all of history. With gardening tools of all things in his weaponry, as well as simply pots and toys, such as slingshots or bowling balls, Villager is an interesting fighter. Watch out for that axe!
Wii Fit Trainer
A health instructor and personal trainer! She may appear a seemingly odd choice for Smash, but her agility and unpredictable attack style makes her an important addition. She can even heal herself, but this leaves her open to attack, so time it carefully!
Rosalina & Luma
Guardian of the Comet Observatory and mother of the Lumas. She may look rather frail, but with her followers at her side and power over the stars, overcoming Rosalina could prove a challenge! Side note, ever wondered what Star Bits taste like?
Little Mac
Both a short ranged fighter and short in general! Little Mac is the boxer in the WVBA, taught by former champion Doc Louis. His signature move is the Star Uppercut, which, though slightly inaccurate, can cause critical damage if it hits.
Mii Fighters
Haven't you always wanted to be a character in Smash? Well now you can! Join in the battle as one of three types of Fighters; Brawler, Gunner and Swordfighter! With a wide variety of moves to use, and an even wider variety of appearances.
Palutena
Goddess of Light and ruler of Angel Land. She grants Pit the power of flight, though too long as to make it easy for him. With her divine powers, and several projectile attacks, Palutena's strategy is to tire her opponents out before finishing them off.
Robin
A powerful tactician with magical abilities under their belt. Using their spellbook, a Tome, they can cast magical attacks using the elements of thunder, fire, air and darkness. If they find themselves up close, they can use their Levin Sword.
Shulk
A determined young man with the power to see into the future. He wields the Monado to increase his own abilities, such as attack strength, speed and jumping height. He can also use it as a sword like weapon, striking with stabs and slashes.
Duck Hunt
A trio of a hound, duck and hidden shooter, who work together to achieve victory! Don't be fooled by it's cute appearence, this mutt is fast! It's duck partner helps it in aerial mobility, while the sniper is responsible for finishing moves.
Ryu
A powerful martial artist taught by the legendary Gouken. He has many iconic moves, including the fireball 'Hadouken', uppercut 'Shoryuken', and spinning kick 'Tatsumaki Senpukyaku'. He's participated in almost every Street Fighter tournament.
Cloud
An arrogant swordsman and member of the mercenary group, Avalanche. Wielding his Buster Sword, a memento of his old friend Zack, Cloud can move surprisingly fast and deliver incredible attacks called Limit Breaks, with his strongest being the Omnislash.
Corrin
Once stuck in the middle of a war, having to choose which side to fight for. Now, Corrin has decided to take out the frustration in Smash! They wield the legendary sword, the Yato, and can transform into a dragon.
Bayonetta
One of the last Umbra Witches in existence, Bayonetta is a hunter of angels. She uses her hair as a conduit to summon forth demons to attack for her. She's also a master of the Gun Arts, which explains the guns all over her.
Inkling
The Inkling, aka Agent 3, is best known for their stylish clothing. Also, they saved Inkopolis from the Octolings, but, whatever. Their arsenal consists of ink packed guns and weapons. For a squid, they're actually quite fast on land.
Isabelle
A close friend of the Villager, as well as their secretary. Despite her Innocent appearance, she packs a punch! A few of her attacks are similar to the Villager's, but she also uses moves inspired by New Leaf items, and is noticeably more agile.
Piranha Plant
A Piranha Plant!? In Smash!? An all around fighter, it uses unusual attacks such as breathing poison and spitting spiked balls, and it can hide it's body in it's pot to take less damage. It's surprisingly quick both on the ground and in air.
Heihachi
Host of several Iron Fist tournaments, member of the Mishima Clan and main antagonist of the Tekken series. Despite his old age, he's powerful and over the top, using moves such as the Demon Uppercut, Spinning Demon and Hell Axle.
Chorus Kids
A trio of children with less than desirable signing voices, which they can use to attack. They're not on their own, however, as they have a whole bunch of friends, such as Karate Joe, the Wrestler or the Wandering Samurai, to help them in battle.
Melmetal
A mythical Pokemon of great legend and the culmination of several Meltan fusing together. Melmetal is slow and heavy, but makes up for it with power. It can melt it's body down into liquid metal to move around quicker, though only temporarily.

Modes[]
Solo[]
Classic Mode[]
In this mode, the player is presented with 7 battles, with 7 stages and 7 sets of opponents. Each character has a predetermined roster of fights, with some having their own rules and conditions. The player can choose both the difficulty of this mode, ranging from Easy, Normal, Advanced, Hard and Master. Each difficulty also determines how many lives the player is given. Should the player run out of lives, they are presented with a Game Over screen.
The first 6 battles are against other characters, but the final battle is unique, and it varies upon difficulty. In Easy and Normal, the player faces off against Master Hand. In Advanced, both Master and Crazy Hand are fought. In Hard, if Master Hand is defeated first, Crazy hand transforms into the Master Core. And on Master, if Crazy Hand is defeated first, Master Hand shines a blinding, blue light, and morphs into the shape of a woman, becoming the Master Soul.
The Master Soul attacks with exploding spheres of energy, lasers, shooting stars and giant fists. It shrinks as it is hit, and once it is no bigger than the fighter themselves, it fades away.
All-Star Mode[]
A mdoe where one or two players face off against every fighter in the game, with only one stock throughoout the entire challenge. The fighters are fought in groups of 6, 13 rounds in total. Players are not healed in between fights, instead being placed in a resting room with a predetermined set of healing items.
The order of which the fighters are fought can be changed. There's Chronologically, where you fight the characters in order of when they debuted in gaming, Reversed, which, quite obviously, goes from newest to oldest, and Random, where there is no order to the fighters.
Events[]
The Event Mode takes the player through a series of special challenges that place the player in scenarios with certain conditions and an objective that must be met.
