Brick Blocks are blocks in the Mario franchise. They behave like ? Blocks, but shatter when they are empty. If a Brick Block contains a coin, power-up, or other item, it becomes an Empty Block when hit.
In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Brick Blocks containing multiple coins can be turned into Gold Blocks if hit fast enough.
Standard Brick Blocks are generally colored brown. They may vary in color based on function. In Super Mario Bros., these and other blocks share their color palette with the terrain of the course, giving them a different appearance in certain course themes. Some New Super Mario Bros. games reference this with a new color scheme: Brick Blocks are often blue underground, in towers, indoors in some castles, and at night; and gray in the snow and Ghost Houses.
