Hungarian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From áru (goods, merchandise, product) +‎ -l (verb-forming suffix).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈaːrul]
  • Hyphenation: árul
  • Rhymes: -ul

Verb

[edit]

árul

  1. (transitive, imperfective) to sell, deal in, keep for sale (spend time trying to sell)
Synonyms: árusít, (formal) forgalmaz, (formal) értékesít
    Perfective: elad

Usage notes

[edit]
  • To express a successful sale, a completed transaction, the verb elad is used. In the middle-voice sense “to be sold”, the verb elkel is employed.
  • Its verbal noun árulás and present participle áruló are mostly reserved in the sense related to elárul (to betray) (unless the context makes it clear otherwise), so the corresponding forms of árusít (or other synonyms) are preferred in the original sense “to sell, to keep for sale”, namely árusítás (selling) and árus (vendor).
