From Middle English Edynburgh, from Old Welsh Eidyn, a Celtic/Brythonic region of uncertain origin (possibly a personal name; compare Proto-Celtic *dūnom (stronghold)) + Old English burg (castle, stronghold). More at Eidyn and Etymology of Edinburgh.
