Etymology
From an earlier hypothetical form *sughiuța, from Vulgar Latin *suggluttiāre, probably from an alteration of Latin singultō, singultāre, from singultus, with the prefix sub-. The (Vulgar) Latin was probably influenced by gluttiō, gluttīre (cf. înghiți). Compare Aromanian sugljits, sugljitsari, Sicilian sugghiuzzari, Spanish sollozar, Portuguese soluçar. Compare also Italian singhiozzare, from *singluttiāre, from singultāre, and also French sangloter.
Verb
a sughița (third-person singular present sughiță, past participle sughițat) 1st conj.
- to hiccup
